    For many fans of The Young Ones, this is their favourite episode. It's definitely mine as well!
    Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, Ben Elton, Mel Smith, Griff Rhys-Jones, Emma Thompson (yes, she was in Love Actually and Nanny McPhee!) AND Motorhead (YES, that was indeed Lemmy and the lads performing Ace of Spades!) were ALL in this! Not only did it have an all-star line-up, but the idea of Mike, Rick, Vyvyan and Neil competing on University Challenge was sheer brilliance. The bet on who likes Rick, the train-journey, the trip to the laundrette...from start-to-finish, Bambi was peak Young Ones! Glad you loved it!

    This has to be my favourite episode of series 2 if not my favourite of the whole show, the scene in the laundrette with the vomiting washing machine never gets old! I also love when Vyvyan loses his head on the train, surreal comedy at it's best! Brilliant episode!😂😂😂

    "Bambi" is the ultimate episode because it pitted punks against the privileged. You have to remember the punk movement came about because of the social restraints and class discrimination of the 1970s. There was a widespread struggle with unemployment and "No Future" if you came from a lower socioeconomic background. This episode featured real Cambridge and Oxford University comedian alumni Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones because they represent the elite the viewer saw them as part of the establishment. They played upper-class stereotypes. Whereas The Young Ones comics went to Manchester University and represented the new alternative comedy movement. At the time the upper-class stereotypes represent the very real reality of walking straight into top jobs such as "Director-General of the BBC" or "Chairman of British Rail," so here the name "Footlights" implies privilege. This episode genuinely and patently pitted the underdogs against the Toffs. That's why it's the best episode. It was glorious!

    Season 2 is when this really kicks off IMO. I was 10 watching this for the first time and I knew this was something special (beginning of "alternative comedy"). Gladly the end of middle aged men telling the same jokes over and over on stage or TV.

    Most people would say this is the best episode, but I've never been that keen on it, it feels a bit too "cartoony" even by the usual standards of the show, and I've never really got the whole Bambi/Bamber thing. It's okay, though. There were some gags you might not have known from the States, but not exactly essential... the Yellow Pages was a telephone directory that had an advert at the time with the tag line "Let your fingers do the walking". Also, University Challenge had two competing teams on desks, which, for the purposes of TV, were shown one above the other via split screen. The idea of them being PHYSICALLY above the other team was quite a good gag at the time.

    Spot on about the budget, having a musical act changed the category of the program and allowed it to have a bigger budget….and yes that’s the real Lemmy, presumably the rest of the band were the real thing as well.
    The lady was Emma Thompson, a pretty well known English actress most recently appeared as the Headmistress in the film Matilda.
    Robbie Coltrane played Dr Samuel Johnson in a series of Blackadder, the man who’s dictionary they burned and had to re-write.

  • @silgen
    @silgen Год назад +3

    Footlights consisted of Ben Elton (standup comedian, author, and scriptwriter for a number of sitcoms, including Blackadder and The Young Ones), Emma Thompson (actress and double Oscar winner), Stephen Fry (actor who has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, for example Lord/General Melchett in Blackadder), and Hugh Lawrie (actor who also appeared in Blackadder as Prince/Lt. George, and as Dr Gregory House in House).
    All this and Motörhead too. On a BBC budget. A minor miracle.

    Footlights is the name of a comedy society formed by students of Cambridge University. Most of the guest stars of this episode were once part of that group, including Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Griff Rhys Jones, Emma Thompson (and the real Bamber Gascoigne). The name of the rival college is a reference to that.

      Wrong,Griff Rhys Jones was 'Bambi',the spoof (self-titled) episode character-parody of the real Univ.Challenge's Bamber Gascoigne {who was nowhere near there!]
      P.S. Jones' comedy duo partner Mel Smith was the doorman ! 👌👍
