My take on B&W, is that it is pure magic. I also have immense appreciation for silent movies as well, as the actors had to tell some of the most subtle stories, with facial expressions and the orchestra shaping it with sound often and on the fly in theatres. The cinematographer's had a larger role in the production, as the lighting was critical to capture a specific mood or focus of the director. I occasionally see shows like ..."WWII colorized" and find myself consciously avoiding them, as I am holding onto that "magic" and not so willing to see it get replaced. My bias is very strong on this one, so am gonna start your video now and will add my post production thoughts... plz continue, Mr. Shady 🐈

I love black and white too. I'm pretty sure I say that right at the beginning. ;) But I do agree, I prefer it STAY that way. However, I think it's fun to see these images and videos in color (as long as it's somewhat accurate). Casablanca is one of my all-time favorite movies and I would never want to watch the full movie in color, but as you can see in this video, I did a few scenes to see what it would look like and it's kind of neat to see. But, again, it's just for fun. Nothing I'd want to have permanently done. I think some things photography can be different, especially if it's family photos. Though the black and white looks great, it's great to be able to see family members I may have no ever even been able able to meet as they actually looked. But it has to do an accurate enough job in order to make it something I'd want semi-permanently changed. Ansel Adams' works? Nah, I'd prefer they stay black and white, but again, cool to see what he might have seen while taking the photos.

Good stuff here. Like the previous commenter I enjoy old B&W movies in black & white, I'm still not used to seeing them in color- and the technology isn't quite there yet for best results. I am very interested in trying out this software though, since I have quite a number of old color photos which have faded badly. I've tried colorizing them but unsuccessfully, as Photoshop & other software like it require a lot of learning to use them well. Now I see a possible answer: make them B&W, then colorize them, as you demonstrated so well. Thanks for the video!

Yep, I agree with the movie scenarios. I'd almost always prefer the original black & white, but it's still fun and interesting just to test it out on some movies. The photos or even old stock or home videos would be a much better use. My dad has some 16mm film from Vietnam, that once digitized, I really want to see what it does with it.

@@shadyendeavor OK, now it's two hours after my comment, and I've downloaded & installed Pinokio & FaceFusion, and I've already enhanced one of my old faded photos- and it's GREAT! There are so many options it'll take me quite a while to figure out what works best for each photo, but I'm already delighted with the results. Can't thank you enough! (And of course I'm now subscribed!) There's one thing that puzzles me though- my GPU is Nvidia but when I try to use CUDA it gives me an error... oh wait, it's probably just because it's a very old GPU. Time to upgrade!

@@deniswauchope3788 That's awesome to hear! I'm so glad you're already making use of it.
As far as the GPU problem. I haven't been able to look into it on the Nvidia side as I'm on a Mac, but I had the exact same problem with coreml, which is the Mac equivalent. The dev knows about it, but I'll let him know that the same might be a problem with cuda/nvidia.

Lookie there.. two comments in a row! 😸 OK, as per usual, the tech here is pretty damned amazing, even if limited on some of the examples you gave. Those will certainly improve over time and my guess is that in 6 mo. the same images / movies will show improvement. Could still be some of my bias, but am a fan of the much more "tame" colorizing. The idea of a bit of color is nice, as it pops a bit more, but I would be curious to see an entire movie, of which I am familiar (1940's are my all time fave years as Noir films are especially notable). Noir is not a good example as they were specifically BW, so the focus on cinematography and light was as part of the production as actors and directors. In the end, a very subtle change I saw in each of the examples is about all I am liking at this point. I suppose that will change a bit, as more and more things are colorized, as later generations just don't have the same attachment, as I do. As always, wonderful explanation and breakdown with excellent examples of original vs. changes made easy to understand 🐈

Congratulations! 2 in a row! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!
I too am a fan of the more subtle deoldify over the ddcolor. At least when it came to film. As long as it was actually doing something. Especially with The Shop Around the Corner clip. I'd love to have shown longer scenes that really showcased how it would affect a movie, but you know how RUclips is with copyright... I was worried enough as it was with what I put in. That's also why at the very end, the parts I put in of Casablanca are completely cut up with the audio being off for part of it.
