    The river I grew up with is the River Wharfe (Yorkshire England). The greatest news is that Atlantic Salmon are returning after over a century. We have always had good trout and Grayling but having the Salmon back is truly wonderful.

    Your videos are helping me tremendously. Love the dries you use because I can almost always see them. Really helps me observe how you work a section, manage your drift, set and land those gorgeous fish. I appreciate your quiet, focused, almost contemplative approach. No cast by cast, set by set narrative needed. The fishing speaks for itself. Thanks.

    Drew, I just want to say how wonderful your videos are. Unlike many other fishing videos I have seen, you are one of the rare guys who keep it simple and real. I'm glad you miss a fish or two like the rest of us. I think I even seen you get your fly stuck in a tree, like we all have.
    Thank you for wetting your hands before handling the fish and not showboating the fish you catch. Always respect the welfare of the fish and they will be there another day. Thanks for such a wonderful adventure you are sharing with us.

    Very much appreciate that you are being respectful to the land, the fish, and the folks that have enjoyed these areas for generations.... not "Hot Spotting" these places is of incredible importance. It is a huge responsibility to share the joy of fishing these places and be ethical and respectful by not sharing fragile locations. As one who loves at least one of the places, you have shared/fished this means a lot. I have been watching one specific beautiful stream (and cutthroat population) in ID as it has been discovered and is now being "loved to death"... sort of heartbreaking to watch and sadly, as you know, the interweb is a powerful part of degrading beautiful, fragile fisheries and places. Keep fishing and enjoying the discovery - I appreciate the spirit of what you are doing.

    Thanks for the vids, Drew! I'm fairly new to fly fishing (well fishing of any kind really) but picked it up about 7 years ago after watching others at a trout park in MO I took my 4 sons to when they were younger. I just started branching out to the more wild streams here in MO this year because the trout parks were too crowded and not much of a challenge anymore. In trying to learn better techniques I stumbled on one of your trout slam vids and to be honest at first I couldn't stand them because, well, dude you talk really fast...LOL!!! But I have grown to enjoy your vids (especially 'dig' this series) and have learned SO much. This past weekend I hit four of the BR streams in mid-MO for the first time and caught wild bows in each. It was a grind being new to this, but had the time of my life enjoying the solitude and a little success. Just wanted to say thanks for helping me out a bit.

    I am new to fly fishing . I am wondering about all the leaders sizes and what they do ?

    • @LooknFishy
      @LooknFishy  2 года назад +1

      My non scientific explination...leaders are your transition from fly line to the fly...they are tapered so you get turnover/presentation/transfer of energy thru the cast. A simple way to start...if you have a 9ft fly rod...get a 9ft leader, add a foot of tippet (this keeps you from destroying the taper built into the leader) at the end of tippet add a fly. This will give you 10ft of tapered line to fish which will also keep the leader of of the eyes in the rod. After changing flies a few times, you'll get close to the tippet knot...cut and add more tippet. Tippet rings can be super helpful...tie on at the end of your leader and add tippet to the ring. This way you you just keep adding to the ring. A good system for a 9ft rod...9ft 4x tapered nylon leader...tie on (or add tippet ring) 1ft of 4x or 5x tippet...add fly.

    Your drive to be on the stream reminds me of when I was a boy. I grew up on a remote cottonwood-lined river in Idaho where the rainbows averaged two to three pounds each. I rode a bike or horse everywhere I went and the fishing/hunting was incredible as there were very few people who lived in Idaho in those days. The only species of fish we had were steelhead, salmon, trout, and the trout bag limit back then was 36 fish per person. I was addicted to fishing so I didn't spend much time at home and was always on the riverbank where we would catch an occasional five to eight-pounder. We released most trout but the concept of catch and release was just a notion we hadn't completely thought out yet. Anyway, in those days not many people had freezers in their homes yet so it was a waste to keep too many rainbows. Finally, back then we mostly had metal bait-fishing rods but we still used bamboo for fly rods and I fished with an 8' rod and a Shakespear reel. I liked the shorter fly rod to fish smaller heavily wooded streams and just got to the point I used that length of fishing rod on the river too. Thx, for letting an old man reminisce...
