    Environmental impact of ICE cars is not down to CO2 alone - particulates (especially from diesels) & oxides of nitrogen are also emitted. Absence of such emissions from an EV reduces their overall impact even further.

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад

      Hi Steve, good point, you are right. As the common argument is about moving the CO2 emissions to where the electricity is produced, I wanted to address that mainly. Its clear EVs are better for the environment, I appreciate they still have an impact, but unless we go back to horses, they are better than a gasoline car, its frustrating when people say otherwise,

  • @maxgreece1
    @maxgreece1 3 года назад +8

    Your figure for extraction of petrol seems very low. Its pumped out of the ground using power, sent via pipeline or ship (burning the dirtiest fuel available) to a petrochemical plant to be distilled into various liquids (diesel, petrol etc.) and then sent out on trucks around cities to be pumped into garages to wait till you get it out and into your tank. That is a vast and filthy process from beginning to end. Surely its a bigger CO2 producer than you have in your numbers???

  • @nicholassale4046
    @nicholassale4046 3 года назад +2

    I guess there is an additional complication which is the energy mix used in production? I assume the studies on CO2 generated in production assumed the same mix for ICE and EV? In the end, we have to aim for renewable electricity production and zero emission vehicles at the point of use.

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад

      Each study I looked at came out with slightly different numbers to be fair. As you said, it depended on the energy mix for that country. So a battery made in china will generate different CO2 to one made in US due to the energy mix to produce it. Same with petroleum. No matter which study thought, all concluded that an EV was way better overall in the life cycle, and as most broke even between 27,000 & 44,000 miles, which considering there are Teslas out there with over 200,000 miles and no battery change, means they payback in the first 1/4 of their life, although the Teslas are still going, so actually less than that :).

    Yes a Zappi and not happy when I see power going back to the grid (I don’t get any payment) and not into the car- I think you are right as it does this when it’s 0.6 or 0.8 or so

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад +1

      You can set it to use more power from the grid, so if you wanted it to activate when the sun is say producing 500w, then set the eco slider to about 30-40%, then it will draw about 1000w from the grid to make up the difference. Its cheaper for me to wait and do it overnight though, so I have mine set about 70% and activates when solar output is about 1000w

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад +1

      Hi Carsten, that was in my figures. From the research that adds 0.7kg of CO2 per litre used. Burning it causes 2.3kg, so in total - transport, extraction, refining and burning causes 3kg on average of CO2

    Very well done and you made it understandable to the average person. But I knew your conclusion before you started, as EV technology is still in its infancy where we’ve been all about the internal combustion engine for 120 years. EV tech is very good already and will improve by leaps and bounds in the future. We will become greener with EV tech but not with ICE technology in the future. But it was nice to know that it has already caught up to ICE technology even though we are just starting . Good job!

    wow you hand draws fast.
    you do miss out the fact that you looked at an ice car and not its parts. this only take it that your car remain the same for its whole life,
    you have to make replacement parts for an ice car that need renewing at regular times. eg oil, oil filters spark plugs most go to land fill and have no recycling. and all these need co2 costs to make.
    if you look at oil recycling it is costly and time consuming to do it is collected in trucks that have effect on co2. petrol tankers on our roads all use far higher co2 levels.
    there are more factors to go to the electric car side all of which reduce co2 indirectly there is a lot less co2 delivering electricity to your car than petrol chain to your ice car.

      What can I say, you should see me at Pictionary 😏. I've put a link in the description of the studies I used for the data, that will have how they came to the conclusion of all their figures. But you are right, if these aren't included, payback is even sooner, so the Model 3 is even better for the environment than these figures suggest.

      I was a bit disappointed how the video did, as was a lot of effort and research. I do all the production, animation, photography myself - so you can imagine the days spent on it. I work in healthcare, so not media related at all, just an interest in photography.
      I bought my car more for the environmental aspect as I cycle a lot and hate it when cars drive past and I can’t breath. Im keen to spread the word.
      So wanted to do a video on the positives, as still lots of unscientific facts reported even from main stream media.
      All the data is from scientific peer reviewed journals and multiple studies.
      I’m hoping to diversify the channel in the future, but with a full time job, and this being a side project, time is the resource that’s lacking 😂

      I don't think anyone is suggesting scrapping what is already there? More stop producing/buying combustion cars that are worse now, then as combustion cars come to the end of their life, they are replaced with cleaner variants. The batteries last long enough to still be beneficial for the environment. I agree, it would be better if everyone stopped travelling and using resources so much, but whilst that isn't the option, electric transport is a better alternative

      Hi Matthew, they technically are in initial production, which came as a surprise. So if you were to crash a Model 3 in its first year of life. It would have caused more damage to the environment. I was going off data from the journals I looked at. From what I can tell they were independent, and accounted for transport and manufacture of Petrol. That accounts for 0.7 kg per litre of fuel we use. That was why the figure was 3kg of CO2 not, 2.3kg which is produced out the exhaust pipe.
      The overall message was meant to be that whilst they do cause greater harm up front. The overall outcome is better. Sorry if that didn’t come across. I’m going to add all the references in the description later. So you can check it out.
