    What a great way to get young owners and unaware parents to notice the base of their ponies. Too many times, it's all cutesy saddle pads and wraps. What a lucky pony to have such a caring family to take care of the laminitis issues!

    I stumbled upon these videos while really researching when horseshoeing started. I was asked a question by a none horse person, who asked just that. I'm sorry to say, despite having ridden and been around horses for many years as a younger man, I could not give him an answer, so I took to doctor google for the answer and have learned a lot. Not only about when it all started but with this set of excellently explained videos for correcting horses' gait and hoof problems. Really well demonstrated by a good farrier and a person who understands how to instruct. Thank You and well done, it's so nice to see an expert at work and great outcomes from these applications.

      It reminds me an awful lot of acrylic nails, which, for sure, can really be helpful if you tear a nail deep in the nail bed. I personally rebuilt part of a toenail that had fallen off from my snowboarding boots, but acrylic nails, in the long run, are really bad for the nails. I would think the same would be true of this because moisture could maybe start leaking in, no air gets to the area etc, and removing it might also be traumatic to the surface if it adheres strongly. What I would recommend if you just have run of the mill hoof dryness, small cracks, is finding a hoof treatment with ingredients as close as possible to burt's bees cuticle cream and use that on hooves daily. Its really dry where I live and I and my horse had issues with dry, flaking nails. Later I got religious about using cuticle cream and my nails could grow stupid long. It was thanks to burt's bees, and if I had something like that for the horse, I have no doubt it would be great, but you could sort of get a chunk of beeswax, a chunk of cocoa butter, a chunk of shea butter, toss in a bit of coconut oil, and use that on hooves and whatever horse cuticles are..coronet band? And probably have a great hoof product. Just keep it cool to prevent it from going rancid. Maybe cut it into smaller batches to be used as needed. And record the recipe so if you need to make more, you know exactly what proportions you used because I guarentee the first time you make it, it will probably be awesome and the next time it will probably get screwed up because that's just how life is.

    The pony was noticeably much more comfortable turning after the new shoes. Thank you for doing a before and after walk and turn. I would have liked to see her turn the other direction as well because it looks to me that she is slightly better on her left fore, but even the consistent one direction walk and turn is nice. We can talk angles all day, but being able to see the comfort level change is my favorite part.

    What a difference!
    How long do they stay on for?
    What signs should you look for in that would require taking them off prematurely? (Infection/injury/etc?)
    Is it okay to reapply it straight after you’ve taken it off or is it more recommended to take a break from it to see if the issue has righted itself before reapplying if needed?

    • @samfowler4140
      @samfowler4140 4 года назад +1

      They can be reapplied straight after, you do your best to remove any chance of infection with the anti bacterial spray etc.

    Is formahoof more of a treatment to bad shoing or bad hooves or more of a replacement to normal shoes? Also, how does it compare to classical shoing when it comes to enviormental damages? I personally belive more in barefoot if possible, if its not, would this be a better alternative?

    • @C.Woodford
      @C.Woodford 4 года назад +1

      It's not to replace being shod, it's to help take pressure off the hoof if it's bad. It's really good if a horse cannot go barefoot but the owner wants them to be as it's stops the wearing down of the hoof without damaging it

  • @biddydibdab9180
    @biddydibdab9180 4 года назад

    I like the possibilities of the formahoof but am concerned about the angles on this pony. She appears too upright and her movement appears too flatfooted. A perfectly sound horse DOES flick the toe, land first on the heel and roll forward to the toe. After the formahoof application she appears to shuffle like a geisha on wooden block shoes. Is this the case or is the camera not picking up improved movement?

    • @AlexRidgewayFarrier
      @AlexRidgewayFarrier  4 года назад

      We should really not be able to see the slight toe flick and heel first landing as research would state. if we can clearly see that action especially on such a small pony she must be exaggerating the effect as a pain or discomfort response. I feel a flatter landing appearence would actually have a heel first landing if we where able to catch it in slow motion.

    • @biddydibdab9180
      @biddydibdab9180 4 года назад

      Alex Ridgeway Farrier A good way to see the heel first landing on any horse is to video the movement especially at a trot and then play it back in slow motion. I’ll be interested to see the progress of this pony since I think the heels are built up too high and are forcing her onto the tip of her already downward rotated coffin bone. They always try to tip back on the fronts to take pressure off that painful toe. Nice work, by the way, and I’m not criticizing - just expressing what 50+ years of farrier work taught me.

    • @AlexRidgewayFarrier
      @AlexRidgewayFarrier  4 года назад

      Interesting thoughts.... I'll be keen to do a follow up and show how well this horse is now going. You can manipulate the formahoof by trimming it similar to how you would the horny hoof. This pony is no longer landing toe first and is much more comfortable without shoes.

    Why do pony pasterns always seem to have such a shallow angle? Horse pasterns seem like they are 45ish degrees, in line with the angle of the hoof wall but pony pasterns are a much sharper angle, it seems like

    • @AlexRidgewayFarrier
      @AlexRidgewayFarrier  4 года назад

      Yes they have very different conformation. This particular pony is quite upright in the shoulder so therefore will have an upright pastern angle and Hoof wall.

    Did you buy your kit from Ireland? Did you have any problems purchasing them online? I tried buying with preloaded debit cards; they wouldn't invoice me via PayPal & just split the payment for the two debit cards. I wanted invoicing and confirmation emails with shipping tracking numbers. That's pretty standard. I don't like credit cards, so I just load up debit cards here in the U.S. to purchase things online. I don't want to deal with Ireland anymore.

    My mare has laminitis and can barely walk she bas shoes with a bar on it she lost the front (bad hoof) left and coudnt walk and it was so painful to watch my farrier nearly got kicked by her she tried to rear and kick ehen he liffted the other front (weight on bad foot) and nearly fell on him

      This can be common when horses are reluctant to weight bear on any particular limb. There are cushion/foam boards that can be placed under the opposite foot to make it more comfortable for the use whilst you work on one leg.

    Tolle Sache, aber ist es wirklich unproblematisch die Hufe auf einen Schlag in einen ganz Winkel und Höhe umzustellen? Ich meine die Sehnen und die Muskulatur müssen sich ja auch erst umgewöhnen. Und eigentlich macht man das gerade bei platten Pferdehufen in winzigen Schritten über Monate. Ansonsten ist es wirklich toll als Hufschuh bei korrekt gestellten Pferden und als Substanzorthese.

    s follow up and please teach us more about what you do, how the mechanics of the horse hoof. Did you know a horse is an Odd-toed ungulate, hoofed animals-ungulates-. which bear most of their weight on one of the five toes: The non-weight-bearing toes are either present, absent, vestigial, or positioned posteriorly, guess what toe the horse bears its weight on...Yup the Middle Toe so horses are flipping you off 4 Times!! Let that sink in a while ahh the joy & laughter of Naughty Science, trust me there is a lot of evolutionary advancement that is just weird sick & twisted, which seems to go along with the vile sick sense of humor that is nature, take for example the Echidna which is a mammal that lays eggs, rears its young in a pouch & has a 4 headed Penis, not joking.

    *Much*better heel support, better pastern to hoof wall line; wouldn't want the heel any higher, but OK.

      I’ve not used it Alex. All I would say at first impression however is there is a time and place for such products and if it helps a horse when nothing else will then it’s got to be a positive. I guess time will tell

    I like your videos, except the background music, it's unnecessary and makes it hard to understand what you are saying. I know you think it is cool to have music, but it is especially irritating as you are so much more than a fad, it is great information and important for people to see this technology. Thanks for the video
