R53 MINI is the best of the new breed of MINI’s, amazing handling, intoxicating supercharger whine, superb steering without the understeer of the current F56, and a bonnet scoop that actually does something!

great review, ive just ordered a 2019 cooper s sport in emerald grey. Only one thing that really annoys me is the cost increase to get the bigger sat nav screen. looks so much better than the standard one.
Adam Wall thank you really glad you enjoyed it. I agree with the screen it is better but £1800 is not cheap (well that’s list) when are you expecting the car. The car exhaust is the only other slight downside but not something which would bother you on a daily basis is the exhaust is quieter (it certainly would not stop me getting 1)

You know what, I am thinking of buying a mini and have watched quite a few of the reviews on youtube and this one is by far the best review, well done matey.
@@DamoDrives Well I am not too keen on spending money on cars because of the state of the roads round here and just have a Golf 09 reg at the moment. Some idiot left a plank of wood in the road which I drove over and it had nails in I think and I got 2 punctures, got them repaired but now it is knocking when I steer left. Garage estimated £500- £1000 repair bill so if it is nearer the £1000 mark there is no point spending that much money on an old car. Shame because I just got it valeted and it is spotless inside and got it remapped a few years back so it is rapid for a 1.4 Was thinking maybe 1.5 Mini Cooper Sport because people seem to be saying that engine is better suited to the car than the 2.0 ? Would only go for the 1.5 if it is possible to get it remapped though, would like a Bit more grunt than 136BHP. Remapping took my Golf from 122BHP to 155BHP.
It’s a really nice touch and pleased the new Minis all come with those lights. The JCW kit gives it a bit of subtle aggression (unlike the GP3 I reviewed which is the complete opposite of subtle lol)
There is a sports mode as an option but 3 months ago the actual exhaust had to change , talking with the salesman it’s not the pops that we’re not allowed but a change to meet the regs and a cause was the pops went. Be good to know what the rules in the us are 😊 are you a mini owner ?
I had the PHEV countryman last weekend and the engine in that is the same as the i8, the infotainment is the BMW iDrive system to parts sharing across brands is a very good thing
Components will be shared with BMW although not sure where individual parts are made. The countryman is made in the Netherlands , mini hatch in the uk (Oxford) and paceman in Austria so all over Europe. Really it’s German quality more than anything
In two days I have an appointment at the dealership to order my new Mini for 1st March 2020. I’m still unsure about the colour as it’s a difficult choice between Moonwalk Grey and Chili Red. I currently have an Astra SRi Sports Tourer in Granite Grey which looks similar to Moonwalk Grey and I love it BUT I am feeling that the common Chili Red really goes with the vivacious personality of the Mini Cooper S. I have decided on the 3 door automatic and I’m not planning on adding any of the extra packs as I think they are far too expensive and unnecessary. The basic Cooper S Classic looks pretty good to me and as for it having a 2 litre engine... WOW! My Astra has a 1.4 engine so to have a 2 litre Mini, it’s so obviously going to be the dogs bollocks 😆 So excited to be placing my order!
I’m not surprised , great car and it’s a new toy 😊😊. You doing I to chandlers or a dealership. Colour is a difficult 1, the best colour combo I have reviewed was a JCW in white with red strips although both the colours you said are nice. Seeing them in the flesh (well metal) might help you. Yes the packs are expensive but worth a look anyway just in case (media being nearly £3k 😳) be great to know what you go for
Yes the bangs and pops have disappeared in the newer models now. If you bought the LCI model before the exhaust change then it will still pop a lot but my new one doesn't unless you rev it in sport mode hard and even then it's like one pop if that. It's a sad world we live in now. 😔
@@DamoDrives Hybrid OK, but I need to hear that engine. MY need is akin to primal. As for stop start tech well, someone needs shooting. Interested to know if I'm out on a limb here, or do others agree. Are we being sold stuff we don't need or am I just an old fogey.
The overall cars will be the same in terms of build quality , tech and overall feel. This model had quite a few optional extras and especially the JCW aero kit for styling. Obviously the performance is the major difference, clutch wise I did not have any issues.
This lad makes a decent job of presenting this car, presenting a car not as easy as some of you might think, not sure how supporters of the SNP may look appon
Thank you for the very nice comments, it is a challenge having never driven the car before and trying to get an understanding and feel in 36 hours but hopefully some of it comes across 😂. You can have the standard rear lights as it’s more of a nod to it originally being made in the Uk but the car is so customisable 😊
Fairly sure you still get the bangs and pops from what I've seen/heard. Especially with the Sports modes. Even in the UK, picking mine up this week so I'll find out ;)
The rule came in 2-3 months ago (had a chat with the dealership) so if you have a car that was built before then you should get the pops and bangs. The JCW I test drove had lots of pops and bangs as that had the pro exhaust on it but again that is not available anymore. Please tell me what you find out. What spec mini are you getting
@@DamoDrives I will this is super interesting. It's just been built. But I can't find any documentation or press release regarding this matter which is why I'm unsure. When it arrives I'll let you know :)
I don’t remember what year my mom’s cooper S was - maybe 2010 or 2011...I remember the speedometer in the middle of the dash too, instead of right behind the driver’s wheel. I remember my mom (and I) didn’t like that the rear view mirror was so big: it took up a lot of space in the driver’s field of vision in the front and affected the amount of visibility we felt like we had when driving. I found that annoying. I wonder if the newer models adjusted that and if the mirror is any smaller nowadays.
I did not notice the mirror size but the speedo has been moved to what I consider to be a more sensible place right in front of you. This is the latest version of the mini until it is replaced I think next year. Must be a family of mini fans then 😊
I loved my 1st gen supercharged Mini S better than my turbo charged Gen 2. The supercharged engine was better with more torque. And on the Gen 2 they removed the mechanical limited slip differential, needed for autocross and track days, and replaced it in the Gen 2 with electronic traction control which cuts the power on wheel spin and makes the car slower. The outging Gen 3 was no better. I won't buy anotherMini like this Gen 4 until they put back in a mechanical limited slip which is what Mini installs in all their Mini Cup race cars. :(
A supercharger gives different characteristics although surprised a 1.6 supercharged engine had more torque than a 2.0 litre turbo (unless it just felt like it) the current cars are heavier and bigger so it might feel slower. A proper mechanical LSD is the best option. Reviewed a GT86 last weekend and loved the Torsten LSD
Really pleased you enjoyed the video, I only had the car for a couple of days so difficult to tell. The new way manufactures measure mpg is a lot better and more accurate (WLTP) so I would expect to get close to the quoted figures but it will be a challenge not putting your foot down 😂.
@@DamoDrives yes UK, and it's through motorbility, it's £2750 up front that's with comfort pack and the comfort door unlock. Very expensive with all the extras! Almost went for the 1.5 cooper bit the cooper s was only £250 more so what do you do for best 🙄 decided on cooper s orange 😀
The Union Jack 🇬🇧 tail lights are so cute! I think they could have been overdone or a little tacky but I think BMW made them look nice and classy and cute. Are those available in the US, do you think?
I can not say for certain but I would have thought so. It’s a celebration of the Mini heritage being made here in the uk originally. Are minis popular over in the US
MotorSport & Dream Cars yes, they are popular cars here in the US! I find that here in California I see the fiat more often than the minis but i definitely prefer minis because of the handling and how fun the go-kart experience is for driving. Other than that we have LOTS of larger cars here in the US like crossovers, SUVs and vans/bigger cars.
@@DamoDrives In the past yes, now I need a bit more space. Still have fond memories though. What I find most interesting about modern cars is all the tech. Heated seats?. No need right - just wear trousers.
There are so many buttons and gadgets that only high end cars used to have and now it’s becoming a lot more common. Get a Mini Countryman lots and lots of space, reviewed a PHEV countryman last week (video out Tuesday) which has even more tech all though you can not see it
I don’t understand that, either. MINIs are so small and easy to back in and parallel park (I have an F55) that if you need parking assist snivel gear to park something so tiny, you probably shouldn’t be driving.
Really glad you enjoyed it, that’s 1 of the reasons I do this is to drive some amazing cars and share the experiences with others. Are you a mini owner
MotorSport & Dream Cars a Cooper s. Couldn’t afford all the toys- but got a couple. 18” wheels and chilli pack! Wanted adaptive lights but didn’t get them..... hey ho
Talking to the dealer I got this car from no one gets them. Some of the options get a rather expensive. Not sure if you watched the JCW video in the channel but that cost nearly £40k new. Have you subscribed to the channel 🤭
Rikku Tano I might have forgotten to but it’s volcano grey (£550 extra) pleased you enjoyed the video. Some very exciting mini videos coming over the next few weeks
jCW stands for John Cooper Works and relates to a tuning part of the company. It relates to styling and performance and is really the best you can get for each model. With this version of the car you get the Mini one, Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S and then finally the JCW. There is a video on the JCW on the channel as well and you can see the different and performance as well
MotorSport & Dream Cars thanks! I know the “C” stood for Cooper but couldn’t remember the rest of his name and the “works” part. I just was curious about how the name was associated with a particular kind of style and design and how it differs from a “non-JCW” or default style. Thank you! That’s helpful!
Tim Barry they are certainly bigger than any other mini especially the Mini Countryman but customers expect more leg room, more equipment and with more and more safety equipment they unfortunately they will grow.
@@DamoDrives hi there. I guess they have to abide in order to sell. But can you imagine if Porsche had changed the 911 after the first few years just so people in the back seat could have more leg room? If a buyer wanted more room they needed more than one car. That's the side I'm on. You don't buy a sportbike than complain about the low handlebars.
Very good spot. I did not know that until returning the car and had already done the video :) , was a little surprised as you would have thought more cool air would be better for the turbo. Are you a mini owner ?
@@Kiieerrann_xx Was a great chance to drive all of the mini cars, countryman last weekend, clubman due soon (i am hoping for the JCW) and finally the new PHEV. Will be great at the end to choose the best 1 although this might be a bit controversial
@@DamoDrives You need to drive one like mine. JCW PRO Exhaust (valved) with non run flat tyres, adaptive dampers and high octane fuel. Machine gun pops and bangs on demand :D i love my car
My wife actually calls my 2015 F56 my "grown up MINI" since I used to have a 2003 R53....so yes I agree it is more refined but still maintains some of the original styling.

The noise is too much man isn’t a mini one 102ch petrol better for people who hate noise ? Also it has lighter steering compared to S so what do you think for coty driving whi don’t to bither neighbors too
I don’t know the exact costs but they should not be too high. It is a sporty car so it’s going to be more than a little C1. Mpg is pretty good and should be very reliable being owned by BMW. Hopefully a mini owner might be able to comment on this
Chantel Brindle Hiya. I have a JCW Mini in “High Class Grey!” Heavy on petrol but so so worth it for the fabulous performance. Had my 3door Mini for 8yrs now and just about to change for a 5door JCW. Have to take our three grandchildren into the equation. Yes! Mini JCW are definitely for free spirits!
If you are in the uk it’s supposed to be raining 😳 mini has a lot of character but the M135i reviewer might have the same power as the new clubby JCW but it feels a lot more grown up
I think getting rid of the pop and crackle exhaust was the best thing they did to it, the sound was terrible and made the car feel cheap, great news on that front.
I’m surprised as it seemed to be the 1 thing people missed although it is certainly not going to be for everyone which is understandable. I am not sure if you are able to turn it off but still leave it in sports mode on the pre 1019 models but not an option you would ant 😂
Cannot remember the exact numbers but it’s around 40-45 as long as you are sensible with your right foot but considerable less otherwise. Will who has recently joined the channel has a modified 305. Up modified JCW clubman and that’s getting 25 mpg (videos on the channel of that car)
the rear lights are smart given,, but if you are Scottish ,, like me I'd like to have them changed,,the front & rear bumper spoilers are a mess .an after thought... interior is qaulity....so I would actually say,,the 5 is fair out of 10...
Thanks for the comments 😊, you can spec the non union jack lights which is good in your case. The build quality is very very good though all round but you do pay for it. Not liking the body kit is a good thing as it saves you money 😂. So you own a mini ?

I am guessing you are from Scotland as well, I love a nice single malt whiskey so I must be 1/2 Scottish 😂. Hope you enjoyed this video and maybe some of the others on the channel
I took a Cooper S out for a short drive today. I needed to turn my neck at right angles to view the side mirrors, the speedometer was poorly positioned so the heads-up display seems a necessary extra, and the armrest is pointless. I'm hoping my opinion might change after taking it for a 48 hour test drive next week.
There are other models I am reviewing as part of the series including a JCW but unfortunately not the GP yes as that’s not out until 2020. Are you a mini owner
park assist in a mini.... JEEZO THAT'S over engineering piss,,,how about a set of front camera's in the left and right so you can detect if you can pull out.... joke
😂, it’s pretty mad the amount of kit you can get but pay a lot for it. Not sure I would have it fitted as a cost option though , was a fun option to have a go but not sure
These BMW minis are way over priced and not particularly reliable (see reliability surveys.) They can be costly to repair too . Suzuki Swift sport is way better overall and long term a lot more dependable. Thanks for the review
Glad you enjoyed the review and it’s good to hear your opinion. If money did not come into it the Mini is the better car but I do agree they are quite expensive.
I agree it’s not mini in terms of the original and it has certainly grown since BMW have taken over but do people cruelly want a small car you can not fit anything in 😂. I have reviewed the last eat clubman and the previous gem roadster and there is a huge difference in size. Are you a mini owner
@@DamoDrives Yeah. I have restored an old Gen 1 Mini R53 to its former glory. I like the R53 for the mechanical feel and supercharger whine. I also like the Gen 2 R56. I just can't see the point of the new Gen 3 Mini though, Its not as good as Golf GTI's and AUdi S3's and is in the same price bracket. Its lost its appeal to me sadly.
To my mind Mini has lost the plot. They are bloted and overwrought. Way to expensive for what they offer and quite frankly anyone besides the Mini 2 door is f ugly.
It’s must be a difficult decision for mini as people want more and more and it ends up being a bigger car. Some of the aspects of this car are fantastic it certainly drives well on the road but not sure what happens if you really push on. The white JCW I drove looked really good and did not seem that big.
Without the pops just go buy a Fiesta ST for less money,i test driven 3 Mini's they have some very cheap scratchy plastic trim bits inside and out,a very over priced car and do not mention the price of all the goody options they are a joke! the JCW convertible rattles like a Bas--rd.
Not a fan then. Is this the lastest generation of mini you have driven as the models I had seemed to be very well put together although you are paying alot more than something like a Fiesta. I did test a 2015 JCW Mini Roadster and that felt alot harder ride but it was a smaller car.
Another awesome review....I agree with you, the option for sports mode etc is a must and I would want Apple play.

Yes the packs are expensive but worth a look anyway just in case (media being nearly £3k 😳) be great to know what you go for
I have one in blue and is the best car I ve ever driven and I can also hear the bangs and my mini doesn’t have the driving modes
Was it a cooper s as well ?
MotorSport & Dream Cars yes is the new Mini Cooper s with the 7 speed
I would guess as it’s got pops is older that 3 months which is when the pops and bangs went (sadly)
MotorSport & Dream Cars how much mileage does it has yours?
Yes the bangs and pops have disappeared in the newer models now. If you bought the LCI model before the exhaust change then it will still pop a lot but my new one doesn't unless you rev it in sport mode hard and even then it's like one pop if that. It's a sad world we live in now. 😔
I've gotten a new copper s and it goes like a rocket
Simeon Selmon they are very good cars and reviewed a 305 Bhp modified JCW and that was rather impressive 😊
What about the Reliability? heard a lot of issues about tbis car
I only had the car for a couple of days so I cannot answer that I’m afraid 😳
The day I can't buy a petrol car is the day I give up driving.
What do you think of the hybrid mini (video out next week ) or even an all electric version
@@DamoDrives Hybrid OK, but I need to hear that engine. MY need is akin to primal. As for stop start tech well, someone needs shooting. Interested to know if I'm out on a limb here, or do others agree. Are we being sold stuff we don't need or am I just an old fogey.
How does it compare with the entry-level Cooper or One, even?! And, is the clutch manageable for everyday driving? For a slender dude, too! Thanks!
Didn’t get to Finnish comment on rear lights , ie Union Jack logo.
@@DamoDrives sorry using my main account now :)
You will enjoy it anyway. Have a watch of the jcw video if you need a hit of loud 😂
Sports mode gives loads of pops and bangs around 3000+ rpm and above there is loads on lift off the throttle
Must be a family of mini fans then 😊
MotorSport & Dream Cars hahah! Yes! My mom and I both LOVED driving/ tooling” around town in the CooperS when she owned it a while back. So fun!
I'm getting this in September with eco settings included, what mpg should I expect please?.nice video!
Really pleased you enjoyed the video, I only had the car for a couple of days so difficult to tell. The new way manufactures measure mpg is a lot better and more accurate (WLTP) so I would expect to get close to the quoted figures but it will be a challenge not putting your foot down 😂.
@@DamoDrives I'm no speedster at 67 lol, can't wait until end of September as ordering tomorrow! Thanks for replying x
@@DamoDrives what is the quoted figures please mpg for eco mode? 👍🏻😉
I would expect 40-45 . Are you in the uk and hope you got a good deal
Fantastic little hothatch . Remember to SUBSCRIBE to the channel so you don’t miss out on the other mini videos coming to the channel soon
MotorSport & Dream Cars there were actually more than 3 mini’s that appeared in the Italian job and not just 3
#HOONEH H.R I only remember 3 in the original version with Michael Caine but happy to be corrected 😊
Easy to change tail lights? not a jack fan
Funny thing is, if you need self parking on a mini, then you probably haven't passed your test.
I don’t think I would spec it as I can park but some people are shocking lol. You a mini owner
@@DamoDrives
In the past yes, now I need a bit more space.
I enjoyed your video and assessment!
Really glad you enjoyed it, that’s 1 of the reasons I do this is to drive some amazing cars and share the experiences with others. Are you a mini owner
Great- thanks. Just ordered one
kernowoutdoors did the video help in the decision ? And where did you order it out of intreast
Yeah. I ordered the day before and just needed some reassurance. Bought from my local dealer-ocean mini... thanks
Glad it helped and I am sure you will enjoy the car, what did you order
MotorSport & Dream Cars a Cooper s. Couldn’t afford all the toys- but got a couple. 18” wheels and chilli pack! Wanted adaptive lights but didn’t get them..... hey ho
Talking to the dealer I got this car from no one gets them. Some of the options get a rather expensive. Not sure if you watched the JCW video in the channel but that cost nearly £40k new. Have you subscribed to the channel 🤭
Nice Review ! Maybe u mentioned it , which Color is this ?
Rikku Tano I might have forgotten to but it’s volcano grey (£550 extra) pleased you enjoyed the video. Some very exciting mini videos coming over the next few weeks
thunder gray mate.
Mini owner or you happen to know the losing options for the car 😊
Q: what does a “JCW _____” mean? For example : a JCW steering wheel. What exactly does that refer to in terms of styling or look?
jCW stands for John Cooper Works and relates to a tuning part of the company.
I think the first gens were the best looking, aside from the early originals. Its too bad they got so big even compared to the first gens
I love this mini i might go for this one ! cos it looks sooo comfortable! x
It’s an all round great car, drives well, looks good, good performance and like you said it’s comfortable.
great review!
SUPERDRIVE I’m really pleased you enjoyed it, are you a mini owner
@@DamoDrives Not yet, weighing up my options in the hot hatch market!
I reviewed the i30N performance and that is a brilliant car so if it’s in your budget I would seriously consider 1 or even 6 months old
2 nd generation was overall best hatch
Is that the 2nd gen Cooper s or the entire 2nd gen range ? Mini owner or mini fan 😊

Would like to review a modified modified mini at some point this year and or a challenge
Bonnet scoop is fake btw. No turbo charger feeding
Very good spot. I did not know that until returning the car and had already done the video :) , was a little surprised as you would have thought more cool air would be better for the turbo. Are you a mini owner ?
@@DamoDrives I know... sadly not been active since the Gen 1 cars and yes i am a MINI owner :D 2016 F56 JCW
@@Kiieerrann_xx Was a great chance to drive all of the mini cars, countryman last weekend, clubman due soon (i am hoping for the JCW) and finally the new PHEV. Will be great at the end to choose the best 1 although this might be a bit controversial

Keep an eye on the channel 😜😜
My wife actually calls my 2015 F56 my "grown up MINI" since I used to have a 2003 R53....so yes I agree it is more refined but still maintains some of the original styling.
They have certainly grown a lot over the years and the quality of the latest generation is very good although you do pay a slight premium
Best and only good new thing about the 2L mini, that start button.
It’s a really cool switch button thing 😊

The noise is too much man isn’t a mini one 102ch petrol better for people who hate noise ? Also it has lighter steering compared to S so what do you think for coty driving whi don’t to bither neighbors too
Good Mini cooper
The Cooper s is a great all round car, well built and fun to drive
Is the cooper S expensive to run?
I don’t know the exact costs but they should not be too high. It is a sporty car so it’s going to be more than a little C1. Mpg is pretty good and should be very reliable being owned by BMW. Hopefully a mini owner might be able to comment on this
Chantel Brindle
Hiya. I have a JCW Mini in “High Class Grey!”
Heavy on petrol but so so worth it for the fabulous performance.
Had my 3door Mini for 8yrs now and just about to change for a 5door JCW.
Have to take our three grandchildren into the equation.
Yes! Mini JCW are definitely for free spirits!
Perhaps they should inject some mini blood into the new ugly 1 series,..... love the mini, test driving a cooper s tomorrow. Soft top.....
If you are in the uk it’s supposed to be raining 😳 mini has a lot of character but the M135i reviewer might have the same power as the new clubby JCW but it feels a lot more grown up
WHAT IS THE BEST MINI OF ALL TIME
First to reply! JCW Paceman
Well done on getting there 1st 👍 paceman is on the list when I can get hold of 1
My JCW F56
What spec is it
I think getting rid of the pop and crackle exhaust was the best thing they did to it, the sound was terrible and made the car feel cheap, great news on that front.
I’m surprised as it seemed to be the 1 thing people missed although it is certainly not going to be for everyone which is understandable. I am not sure if you are able to turn it off but still leave it in sports mode on the pre 1019 models but not an option you would ant 😂
Alan Rogers Get the selectable drive modes and the pops and crackles come back in Sport mode.
I've put a deposit down for 2020 GP3
That looks an amazing bit of kit 😊 and Will be a lot of fun. Are you in the uk
@@DamoDrives yes I am
Hoping someone will go into the dealership I reviewed the cars from and actually purchased a car 😂
What abt mpg ?
So you own a mini ?
jim esson dude get a bloody life. You sound just like every small minded Nat I have chatted with.
We are Scottish we only like haggis n whisky Oh!!! And the EU running our lives.
Independence; in the EU !!!! Don’t make me laff. What a pile o shite
Not all cars are perfect so hopefully 48 hours with the car might change your opinion. Be good to hear your opinion after having car for a bit longer
FIRST !
Thanks mate, let’s hope lots of people enjoy it as well 😊
😍😍
I think that means you like the car 😂
3:12 is that where you dump your victims!?
How can it be the best mini ever when compared to the jcw and gp
There are other models I am reviewing as part of the series including a JCW but unfortunately not the GP yes as that’s not out until 2020. Are you a mini owner
@@DamoDrives Ahh fair enough. No i own a 4 series right now but im picking up a jcw tomorrow, I'm literally shaking with excitement.
They are so much fun, is it a brand new JCW
@@DamoDrives Yeah the test drive won me over in less than 2 minutes to be honest. Nah it's a 2015 plate with 14k miles on the clock.

park assist in a mini....
Pretty, but too big. R56 is the best imo. I love my 09 jcw hardtop. ❤️
They are certainly bigger. I reviewed a jcw roadster last year and that was so much smaller. Have been reviewing a countryman and that is massive 😂
32 thousand,,f me get a second hand Renault 5 turbo..
They are not cheap. Reviewed a countryman PHEV last week and that goes up to £44,000
A Renault 5.......lol lol.. Flipping hell I think we had one of those in the early 80s..... Hardly fun to drive..... Or push
I wanted a Renault 5 turbo when I last my driving test originally then the cost of the car and insurance set in 😂
Second
迪寰 吴 thanks for watching video and hope you enjoyed it 😊
Look at the size of it. Its not a Mini anymore. Its bigger than an Audi A4 from the mid 2000's
Countryman colours are disappointing … not much choice
To my mind Mini has lost the plot. They are bloted and overwrought. Way to expensive for what they offer and quite frankly anyone besides the Mini 2 door is f ugly.
It’s must be a difficult decision for mini as people want more and more and it ends up being a bigger car. Some of the aspects of this car are fantastic it certainly drives well on the road but not sure what happens if you really push on. The white JCW I drove looked really good and did not seem that big.
Easy answer. no.
They made it bigger, heavier. and put a bigger engine in it...worse "mini" ever imo.
