  • San Blas Islands... a beautiful paradise in Panama, but the Guna Yala people are not governed by Panama and have their own laws and traditions that make it a very unique place to visit.
The stunning scenery is something you would see on a postcard or travel ad. And the people are very industrious from the way they get around the islands on their dug out sailing canoes to the way they have adapted new business ideas to cater for visiting sailors.
This episode gives you a glimpse into 'A day in the Life' of our family while at anchor in San Blas followed by an epic kite surf session using the trade winds that pump through this region.
Archie gives you all some clear instructions on how to launch a kite from a boat! However our kiting aspirations are quickly squashed by the local Congresso and we discover there are more rules in San Blas islands than we expected.

Seeing the kites flying every direction how do you keep from crashing into each other? The view is so Beautiful there! 👍👏😇🙏🏻🤗😎❤️

Everyone is responsible for being in control of their own kite. Like driving on the road… there’s been the occasional crash but nothing serious just tangled kite lines and only when they were learning. Stunning place! 😀

Did I hear, "Marmite rolls"? I thought they'd be Vegemite buns? Great to see the juniors baking too! My oldest son and I sailed around San Blas about 35 yrs ago, and were the only foreign tourists around that week! I'm enjoying reliving old memories through your eyes. Fair seas and good winds go with you.

Haha 😂 marmite vs. Vegemite is a regular argument but we had family visit from NZ and we were just happy to have a form of savoury spread again 😉
I bet it was a whole lot different 35 years ago with no rules but I imagine the beauty of the place was the same 😊

Hi, I've been enjoying your channel for a while now. Love the family doing so much together.
After seeing other channels kite surfing in the San Blas Islands and the prices they pay for the fresh fruit and vegies, I believe you were ripped off. None of the other channels I watch who have also kite surfed the San Blas Islands have been fined. The document displayed in the video listing things that are supposed to be illegal there basically lists everything, including staying on your boat! Was the document genuine or is it a scam? Sorry you had to endure that.
Also, I understand you are originally Currumbin family. Yeehah! I'm at Palmy just down the road.
Keep up the great videos with all the fantastic smiles and activities.

      Hi Lawrence,
Yes I think the locals are getting savvy with their prices and their rules because of some charter yachts that shouldn’t be running charters there but do it anyway. This was a panama travel website with the rules and the other rules are on a cruisers FB page so fairly well known here.
Yes we have family in Currumbin and used to live in Palmy and then Miami before we sailed away. Stoked you’re on board and enjoying the adventure 😁

Nice of the local tradesmen to make house calls! Love those pretty string instruments (I couldn't name them). The hot buns look too good, yum! My goodness, the panorama from 12:30. And we get a lesson in kite surfing today-- a fine place to do it, I would say.
I could understand having some restrictions on activities, as I suppose there might be crowding, refuse, and conflicts if it were a free-for-all? But, a warning or a small fine would have sufficed here, instead of those harsh penalties. Not missing any footage you might have of that ordeal.

They wanted to confiscate your gear and fine you $500 US dollars, but they settled for $50... That sounds like a shake down to me. Another great video, cheers mates from Texas.

Your right! I watched another sailing video last week and a guy got stopped by the Panamanian police in the city, and all they wanted was money. First they wanted $100, then $50. He got them to come down to $20 before they let him go through. A lottery ticket lady was the one that took the $20.

I can't believe they want to confiscate your gear and fine you $500 without giving you a warning first. No smoking, no littering, no diving, no pets, no filming, no kite surfing, no spear fishing, no bottles, no drones, no wake boarding, no surfing. Thank you. Come again. I don't know what sailboat lodging is. Sounds like they don't want any boats there.

      Yeah fun police 👮‍♀️
The law is supposed to be that only the Guna Yala can own and operate a business in the islands but there’s a few cowboys running sailing charters and they’ve kinda ruined it for folks like us.

    • @sailingwithsix
      @sailingwithsix  Год назад +1

The Guna Yala people can make up their own rules and laws - they are not governed by Panama but have their own ‘congreso’ or government. The laws are not published anywhere but on travel websites and social media. However once you’re out there it becomes clear that it’s ‘general knowledge’ to regular visitors. Sorry I can’t give it much more clarity than that.

All those things that are "prohibited" at San Blas sure look like an attempt to skim the clueless tourists. I understand the ban for photographing cemeteries, okay, it's disrespectful. Watching brits photographing graves at Pere Lachaise was disgusting. I also understand the ban for jetskis and such, it disturbs the wildlife. So does scuba diving. Every time I see people touch the corals I want to scream. But KITESURFING!? How does THAT harm anyone or anything?
And a thought for the Panama government - if your country depends on tourists so much, MAYBE you can just give a brochure of all things forbidden on the islands when you check people in at the customs? Instead of attacking moms on boats demanding fines. And a fine that goes down from 500 to "how much do you have" sure sounds like a scam.

    • @sailingwithsix

Yes it's all so frustrating and strange?! I guess it's part of travelling.

@@sailingwithsix Talking of "interesting" travel experiences. Paris, 20th arrondisement (one of the more "unfortunate" ones), I'm coming out of the subway. I'm alone in a corridor that narrows and turns. Suddenly I'm looking at a WALL of black guys the size of a double-wide refrigerators in impecably tailored suits. Seeing me, three of them reach into their jackets... My thoughts: I interrupted a drug deal, they're reaching for their guns, I love you Mom. Nope, subway security checking tickets and showing me their badges. They wore better suits than ME for crying out loud!!! Who dresses security like that!!! UGH!
