I have a buddy who worked with Amy Grant who told me to buy Will's first album. He described it as, "like Ben Folds Five but with guitar". In retrospect, I think that was a bit of an understatement. This album was the soundtrack for one of the most magical periods of my life. I can't listen to it without thinking back to that time. Good Old Days really hits home. We lost a true talent and one of the best singer/ songwriters of his day.

All I can say is this guy was one of the greatest songwriters I've ever heard. He is truly missed...and this is coming from a 12 string bass playing hard rock/metal guy! When I discovered him on HBO's Reverb, I went out the next day and bought his CD. His music changed the way I approach my own writing....and the way I listen to music. His music touches a part of my heart that is only accessed when thinking of happy moments from my childhood....amazing talent...Love Owsley!

I love this guy’s music so much. Got to see him play at the Bottom of the Hill here in San Francisco and told everyone I know to check him out. May 1, 2010 is a day I remember like it was yesterday. Beautiful sunny morning. Woke up without an alarm, excited that it was finally Indy 500 month, and sat in bed reading email on my phone. Seeing the news that Will had died the day before landed like a ton of bricks - i didn’t feel right for weeks. Hearing his immense talent is an experience always tinged with a little bittersweet, both in that his light was never seen widely and that it’s now gone from this world.

Saw him as the opener for Smash Mouth back in 1997 or 1998 when I was 12. Had no idea that a band could sound like that live. Back then, it was hard to find music that wasn't pushed by the big labels, so I lucked into winning his S/T at an event booth from the local indie radio station. Wore that CD out. Sure, some of it is ez-listening pap, but what a great songwriter when he was on top of his game ("Coming Up Roses," much of the Semantics stuff). RIP.

As a player, it's amazing the handle on chord voicings and the fretboard that Will had. SUCH an amazing player. Some of these songs would be REALLY difficult to pull off with just an acoustic, yet he seems to do it and make it look pretty effortless for the most part. Makes me think I need to woodshed more.

    • @mskcrc
