    Dude thanks for your work. I’d be terrified of losing footage- if power is killed mid-clip do you lose the whole file? Has it ever died on you?
    Also, what are you doing with the battery pack, are you on a rig?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад

      Hey hey Shot by Myles!
      Thank you so much for the kind words and checking out the video!
      To answer your questions:
      - Yes, if the power goes out from the battery pack during the recording, you lose the video file.
      - No, the USB battery pack has not died on me...yet... because I generally will barely use up two LED batt lights as I turn on and off the camera when I am filming.
      - The Anker Battery comes with a little pouch that I hang on my tripod when the GH5 is on sticks. When I'm hand held I have the Battery in my pocket.
      You can definitely rig it up with either hotshoe cell phone holders, attach a 1/4 20, velcro. Just depends on what setup works best for your filming situations.
      Thank you so much again! Be sure to check back every Wednesday for something new!

    Thanks for your info and testing on this! Do you think a battery powerbank with an AC plug can work in conjunction with some of the AC adaptors that are available for the GH5 , GH4? Would this be a safer alternative although obviously more expensive?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад

      Hey Michael!
      Thats a good question, I assume that your suggested combination should work. Essentially since the AC versions do the same as what the USB adapter does. It will take available power at a certain level and convert it to what the camera needs. In your suggestion, the Mechanical shutter should work as most of the AC power options will put out that 2.5a instead of 2.0a.
      Is it safer? I would think so since most people are using those types of batteries to plug their laptops into. Unfortunately aside from being a more expensive setup, it may also be quite bulky too. Are you looking for a set up to do super long timelapses?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  4 года назад

      Hey hey Worth!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If you primarily do video, then the USB Dummy adapter I am using will work just fine. No need to get the 2 USB plug version as that other plug will just get in the way. Just remember to always be operating in "silent mode" with the shutter switched to Electronic shutter before hand (while in photo mode) so that when you're in video mode, should you need to do a custom WB, you can. As for a powerbank, honestly you can use anything powerbank rated at 2.1a or higher. I have used different USB 2.4a battery banks and have no problems running the camera from it.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

    Hi! Just and idea. Since you've mentioned 3 amps in both videos. Could you use a Powerbank with even more amps? Thinking for multi purpose since my smartphone can accept 4 amps via my dash charger.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  4 года назад

      Hey hey MythicalChris!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      If won't matter if your USB is capable of delivering more than 3amp as long as it is delivering a 5v. If you are using voltage any higher than that from a USB port you could potentially damage the DC convert as it is only rated for 5v input. The reason the amps don't matter is because it is only going to feed out what its requested of it. So if the camera is only going to max out at a 2.4a request, thats it, even if you have a 10a capable power source at 5v, it will never deliver past 2.4a because the camera isn't capable of requesting more.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

    Great!!! :-) Works perfectly. I also got stuck at the photo issue. I'm running the GH5 + External monitor while filming from the same battery pack: PowerOak K2 50000 mAh 185WH 6 Port (5/12/20 V) Portable Charger External Battery Power Bank. The 5V USB for the GH5 and the 20V output for the external monitor. With 50.000 mAh i can have all the filming time i need. Battery pack hangs from my tripod. With the 'fix' i can now take a kazillion pictures :-) :-) :-)

      My screen is a Neewer 7 Inch 4 K HD and if has the standard battery as you use (NP-F) and it has a DC power-in connector. The DC power in can run 7V to 24V. I use a simple standard round power plug on the power bank and the same size on the monitor side.
      I see on the Viltrox website that your monitor also has a DC input; DC 8V-18V.
      The PowerOak K2 50000 mAh has outputs connectors: 1x 20V/3A, 1x 12V/2.5A and 4x USB power out. (it is a powerbank to charge laptops, etc)

    You re correct about the 2.5a output. If you look at the DMW-AC10 which is the OEM wall converter it outputs 2.5a at 8.4V and pairs with the OEM DCC12. Doing some late engineering work a portable 2.5a output is a little harder than it seems

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад

      Hey One Off Workz!
      Having started to tinker with electrical current, this stuff is truly fascinating and interesting! I have my doubts too if they are able to allow 2.5a through that buck converter from the Anker Battery that claims a Max 3a output per port. I want to see if I can jerry rig together a USB -> Buck Converter with current limit Potentiometer -> makeshift Dummy Battery. And see if this 2.5a really is the deciding factor to allow people to shoot with the Mechanical Shutter.
      If so, then hopefully someone can streamline it as I'm completely novice when it comes to building something on a breadboard from scratch.
      Either way this is very interesting how technology can now be powered with such small batteries and do so much. What kind of videos do you enjoy shooting with your GH4 or GH5?

    • @richardnguyen3591
      @richardnguyen3591 6 лет назад

      Doing the basic math you would need a 22w even input to achieve 2.5a at 8.75v output which is what i measured on the battery and the coupler for the voltage. So math W = V x A. 22w is a 4.4a at 5v battery pack so you need a monster of a juice pack. The other issue is heat from the Step Up converters and most converters only accept 4a max. store.qkits.com/dc-dc-step-down-regulator-lm2596s-2661.html I may try it with this one seems to fit all requirements it will still be semi portable or www.amazon.com/Yeeco-Adjustable-Converter-Step-down-Precision/dp/B06XBZ7BQ6 guess its time to buy a digital power supply too.

    Do you think the GH5 can handle very long recordings without burning the circuits (or the sensor)? I usually do long webinars/conferences with a DC coupler and power adapter connected straight to wall AC power. But this time, the live-stream conference will be much longer, about 4 hours straight in the morning and another 4 in the afternoon, with about 15 minutes break in between. And that doesn't include the the rehearsals. What do you think?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      Hey hey again Clyde!
      It's been awhile! The GH5 will not have any problems recording continuously for that long with minimal down time. We've use the GH5 for 3 day conferences recording for hours and have not ran into any problems with the camera shutting down or anything.
      When Panasonic first released the GH5, they definitely made it known that the only limitation to your unlimited recording is running out of memory cards as you swap them out during recording when the camera jumps to the next card slot.
      Hope this helps! See you in the next one!

      Hi there. I used this setup in the field today with my XLR for the first time and I had a few hiccups that I am not sure if it was from the XLR or not. I had an XLR and a shotgun mic attached to one of the ports. I don't know what exactly I was doing at the time (possibly changing ISO) , but I was definitely adjusting settings while recording sound and the screen went on the fritz (multi colored checker looking). This happened twice and I had to disconnect the battery connection to restart the camera. I am doing a post shoot test with the xlr trying to pinpoint what triggers that but it has not happened again yet.

    It´s not a buck-converter but a boost converter. Buck converter only go downwards, boost converters go upwards. To go from USB 5V up to 8.4V you need a boost converter.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад

      Hey hey again Enrique!
      From what I can see there isn't one at the moment that can use the full GH6 power needs. That being said I think the GH6 is finally the first GH camera that can be powered through the USB-C? That may be your best option at the moment since you will be rigging up a USB Battery bank with this older setup. May as well just use the USB-C port and forget using the dummy battery method. The USB-C method is technically a bit safer as the camera will regulate better through that protocol versus a dummy battery port.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker

      Greetings Adam!
      I have not at this time as this Anker Power Bank is the only power bank I own. But a friend of mine has multiple brands of Battery Banks that I'm going to test and see how well they work compared to the one I specifically selected after some research.
      My guess is that 2.4amp power banks will work just fine, in terms of powering on and staying on for video shoots. With this new discovery on how much power draw photography requires, especially timelapses, the results might vary from power bank to power bank.

      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      Unfortunately due to the limitations of the USB converter, the best solution is to use a traditional battery grip and use two regular GH5 batteries. I do have a theory that could allow people to use the mechanical shutter, but I need to first build it and test it to see if it truly works.
      Sorry I can't give a more USB battery bank solution at this time, but hopefully soon in the future! Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you again then!

    You said at 4:25 that you would email the company and ask for a 2.5A version. Did you do that, and if so, how did they respond? If they never responded, have you found a 5v-to-8.4V USB Buck that is rated for 2.5A? Thanks.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад

      Hey JDW!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      I emailed the company and they never answered back :(
      On further researching and some help from the comment section, it is determined that a regular USB-A will not supply enough power throughput for the maximum need of the GH5 when taking a picture, however a USB-C will!
      So hopefully a company jumps onto this and creates a USB-C to GH5 Dummy Battery adapter. Unfortunately USB-C battery banks are a bit more expensive and bulky to accommodate the ability to recharge a laptop. My best guess is that the GH6 will allow us to power the camera via the USB-C port...or its only going to be available in the GH6s, sounds like something a major company would do, but hopefully not!
      Thanks again for watching, check back every Wednesday for something new!

    • @JDW-
      @JDW- 6 лет назад

      Thank you for your kindness in replying. If you search for the USB Wiki and then click the "Power" link that jumps you down to the "USB power standards" table, you will see that USB-A can handle up to 5A of current if the cable is physically thick enough. So it would appear to be more of an issue with that little 5V-to-8.4V Boost Converter than anything else. If the USB-A cable is capable, then a well designed power supply should be able to satisfy the GH5's power requirements for a mechanical shutter. We can assume that to be 2.5A@8.4V because the official Panasonic AC wall adapter (which is way over priced for what you get) apparently supports all the features of the GH5. Even so, I've not tested that adapter and am simply assuming the mechanical shutter (time lapse, etc) SHOULD work when using it. All said, if we could find a 5V to 8.4V Boost adapter rated at 2.5A or higher, that would make for a great follow-up video and perhaps would be the definitive word on this subject! Thanks again.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад +1

      You're most welcome and thanks for doing a deeper dive into the subject! That is interesting that USB can provide that much power! So now as you said, we'd need an adapter that would allow that throughput as well as a battery pack that would also allow that amount or power through.
      I technically have the tools make a DIY battery adapter that allows the right voltage and amps to put a definitive answer to the subject, and I'm sure it wont fry my camera if I measure everything out...but I only have one GH5 and fear of the "what if".
      Rental houses, if you're reading this, would you lend me a GH5 or GH4 that you don't care about to let me experiment? haha!
      Thanks again for elaborating more on this subject!

  • @Kelkschiz
    @Kelkschiz 6 лет назад

    It sounds to me that the converter is not talking to the powerbank; the converter just converts and takes as much power as is available from the powerbank.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад +2

      That definitely makes sense, it also seems that the GH5 has two types of power modes in terms of how it uses it. The camera seems to operate differently in power consumption depending on how much voltage it's provided upon startup. So something tells me when it detects an AC adapter voltage it will ask for more power than the USB can provide, if someone is able to have a decoded dummy battery we might be able to use the mechanical shutter with a USB power bank, maybe.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker

      Greetings gomcoclamp!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      I'm not sure I understand your question, do you mean in terms of charging the GH5's battery through the camera or just finding a wall charger to charge your GH5 batteries, not the power bank. Or do you just want to power the camera only from the wall and not the anker.
      If you want to power the camera through the wall with the dummy battery, the description link that I have for this USB Dummy battery can be powered from the wall, it does not need to be on a USB battery bank.
      If you're looking just for your standard GH5 battery chargers, I would suggest these newer types than the original Panasonic charger. amzn.to/2ZHvoHL
      These allow for about the same charging time as the panasonic charger and you can charge two batteries at once. Also because it has a USB plug, you're able to charge these with USB powerbanks and solar panels as well when you are out in the field with no access to wall power.
      If you already have this dummy battery but for some reason didn't come with a USB power brick, you can either use a USB power brick you already have around that supplies at least 2.1a (printed on the brink somewhere) or you can get one up to 3a thats in my description link as well.
      I hope this helped answer your question! Thank you so much again for stopping by and I'll see you in the next one!

      I do have the panasonic charger that came with the camera, but I will look after the newer types that you recommended in your response.
      Now I am thinking of plugging the camera directly into the electricity of the wall - and I see now that it's possible with the USB Dummy that you mentioned in the description, yes? I guess I only would have to buy some advice that connects the USB port with the plug socket of the wall?

      Yes, the USB dummy battery can be powered through a USB wall brick, it just needs to have 2a (amps) or higher to get enough power. iPhone wall bricks wont work because they only supply 1a.

      Hey KN!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video.
      From the answers I got from viewers, the electronic shutter could potentially cause the rolling shutter effect with the way it processes the photography, teh mechanical shutter would not.
      Also if you want longer exposures for timelapses, the electronic shutter will only allow for 1 second exposure whereas the mechanical shutter can allow much longer.

      Hey hey again Smokey!
      Thanks for checking out another video and commenting!
      That's great you are able to get the mechanical shutter to work! I wonder if the newer adapters changed the voltage so that the GH5 thinks it's using a battery instead of a AC source. As for the timelapse you have to make sure you follow the steps verbatim because of how the GH5 works. It's weird that I have to go into Photo mode to make the changes first and then turn it off and turn it back on in Video mode to hold the settings. I'd try again and see if may one of the steps didn't work.
      Because if it didn't work the first time and the camera turns off and turns back on, all your settings revert back to the last known settings (kinda weird)

    When in video mode, could you explain how to change the silent mode? I can't find it on my menu or quick selections. Thanks!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад +1

      Hey again Tom!
      So this is weird how they do it, but you need to go into photography mode ('M' on the mode dial). Then go into your menus, first camera tab on the left, and then the fourth page down. You'll see the "Silent Mode" option.
      What I actually did so that I can quickly get to silent mode while in video mode was to just assign one of the Q menus or one of the joystick directions to activate that selection for me. I didn't realize I had to go into photo mode to actually change it while in video mode.
      Hope this helps!

    What about an battery bank that charges with USB C?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  3 года назад

      Hey hey again Josh!
      It won't matter for this specific dummy battery, it limits the current to 2amp. So a USB-C with PD won't really do much.

    Any word on the converter? No white balance is a killer for me.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад

      Greetings Peter!
      Unfortunately no word on the converter, but we could also be potentially limited by standard Type A USB ports in terms of being able to push that many watts. Another fellow viewer brought that to my attention. However it would seem that with all the new tablets and laptops that can be powered by a USB Type-C, those powerbanks supply more than enough power, but are much larger. Im hoping some savvy manufacturer can find a way to make this work for us without carrying a huge battery.
      As for the white balance, it does work, you just have to make sure follow the exact steps in the video to allow for custom white balance in Video and Photography mode. Do you mainly do photography, Peter?

    Does this USB power solution also work for GH5s?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Jeffrey!
      I don't have access to a GH5s currently to test, however I have to imagine that this adapter will work just fine as the GH5s does not take a newer type of battery with different specifications. Hopefully someone in the comment section can chime in if they've used this on their GH5s.

      Just did a big registration of a dance event. 5+ hours with 6 GH5s camera's all running on these powerbanks. When the event was over the powerbanks were still half full. (Mind you it was all recorded on Atomos 4k recorders) but still, really impressed with this setup! Could have easily gone to 6 or 7 hours non stop. Thank you!!

    This same stuff happens when powering from my Andycine. 2.5Amp is not enough. I think we need over 3 amps for everything to work.

      Greetings AcousticBruce!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      That's odd, I could have sworn my Andycine allowed me to use the mechanical shutter because it supplies 8v instead of 8.4v and my GH5 registers that I am in "Battery mode" instead of "AC power mode" (Battery bar does not show). I'll have to check again, but I have a feeling that if the converter box in the USB cord went down to 7.4-8.0v that the GH5 will go into a different power option that would allow us to use Mechanical shutter while attached to a USB powerbank.
      Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you in the next one!

      @@TLDR_filmmaker the reason why your gh5 registers it as a battery is because the official Panasonic AC adapter has a decoded microchip in the dummy battery that tells the camera that it's an AC power source

    Hello, is it okay if I use a power bank that has 3A output?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      Hey hey SMOKEYoriginalHD!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      Yes, if your USB powerbank is capable of 3A it will be fine with this USB Dummy Battery. Long story short, an electronic device is only going to draw as many amps as it needs, so having more amps from a power source is fine. Voltage is where you don't want to go over as it will then fry your electronics.
      Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you in the next one!

      Hey jpalquisola!

      The SD cards I use are made by Transcend UHS-3, specifically this one
      amzn.to/2PIVrw5 (Affiliate link)
      These have worked quite well for me, but these are not fast enough to film in the ALL-I 400mpbs mode in the GH5.

    hi there ! I have the same setup (with the same cable and power bank) but it doesn't work anymore. When i try to power on my GH5, the green light flashes for a second but the camera doesn't switch on. Has anyone already experience that kind of issue ? Do you have any solution ? Thx ;)
    Keep on the good work ! Best wishes from Paris

      Hey hey again Alexis!
      It's been awhile! Thank you so much for commenting!
      I've experienced this but with a regular Panasonic Battery. What I did was take out the battery, power it on with no battery so that whenever energy is left internally is drained out immediately, then put the battery back in and power up. This usually solved the hiccup.
      For your case I would take out the battery, power on with no battery, put in a regular panasonic battery and power up so that the system refreshes its own memory setting, then power down, and go back to this USB dummy battery. See if this works for you.
      The other thing to look at is if the USB power bank you are using is supplying enough power through its port. But if you are plugging it into the wall, make sure you are using a USB power brick that's powerful enough (incase you bought the version that doesn't come with a USB power block)
      The very last thing is to check that the converter is giving enough power through the dummy battery, if you have a regular Multi-meter to check the voltage that's given through the adapter, I would see to make sure its given the rated 8.4v or near there.
      Hope this helps! Let me know what you find out through a couple of these troubleshooting ideas! Best wishes from USA

      Hey hey Amjad!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Hmm, does the A6400 allow for USB battery charge like the Sony A7iii? If so you could place the battery inside, then connect any USB battery bank to it and it'll power and charge at the same time. I think the A7S III is the only one that accepts full power delivery, so any of their other cameras will simply slowly trickle down until the internal battery dies. But if you did want to go the USB only route, here is one similar to the newest GH5 USB Dummy battery I use that will deliver enough power: amzn.to/3l6amgH (These are my affiliate links, by using this link I get a small commission that directly supports the channel at no additional cost to you.
