  • Drill to close measure using footwork and tempo changes at spear. At this stage the drill is kept linear, with no sideways movement, and the actions are limited to a specific attack, parry and counter combination. The goal is to focus on collapsing the distance between you and the opponent to attack. Non-linear movement and additional actions are gradually added, until all restrictions are lifted and it becomes freeplay. With experienced students this can be done in a single class period, allowing them to focus on training different elements of the fight while leading up to actual fighting. For less advanced students it's a foundational drill, and elements are added over a series of classes as the students gain sufficient competence with the skills.

Great video. There are far to few spear fighting vids out there. Great excercise for measurement and also parrying and countering. Are there more spear-videos from the Northwest Fencing Academy out there? I've searched but found none

Beautiful. I learned a similar style of historical spear in the Dardi School but this is a great drill, sound fundamentals and yet the principles are identical to fencing. If I may ask what system is this? Also the "pirate code: more like guidelines", brilliant application.

What source material do you use? I'm not familiar with HEMA spear yet, so my background with Chinese spear makes it seem weird to me that the rear hand is choked up so far.
