I have done a few building reviews in the past already, but never one about the First World War subject. The centenary of the combat debut of the Schneider CA tank was a good opportunity to change that!
The Hobby Boss kit is pretty easy to build, only the workable individual track links are a challenge. How you add a few missing details to the model will be shown in the video.

The Schneider CA 1 (originally named the Schneider CA) was the first French tank, developed during the First World War.
The Schneider was inspired by the need to overcome the stalemate of trench warfare which on the Western Front prevailed during most of the Great War. It was designed specifically to open passages for the infantry through barbed wire and then to suppress German machine gun nests. After a first concept by Jacques Quellennec devised in November 1914, the type was developed from May 1915 onwards by engineer Eugène Brillié, paralleling British development of tanks the same year. Colonel Jean Baptiste Eugène Estienne in December 1915 began to urge for the formation of French armoured units, leading to an order in February 1916 for four hundred Schneider CA tanks, which were manufactured by SOMUA, a subsidiary of Schneider located in a suburb of Paris, between September 1916 and August 1918.
Like most early tanks, the Schneider was built like a simple armoured box, without compartmentalisation of the inner space. It lacked a turret, with the main armament, a short 75 mm cannon, in a sponson on the right side. By later standards it would therefore have been an assault gun instead of a tank. The vehicle was considered a very imperfect design, because of a poor layout, insufficient fire-power, a cramped interior and inferior mobility due to an overhanging nose section, which had been designed to crush through the belts of barbed wire but in practice caused the tank to get stuck. Improved designs were almost immediately initiated but the production of these, the Schneider CA 2, CA 3 and CA 4, was eventually cancelled.
The Schneider CA 1 tanks were widely used in combat during the last war years. Their first action on 16 April 1917 was largely a failure, the tank units suffering heavy losses, but later engagements were more successful. In 1918 the Schneider tanks played an important role in halting the German Spring Offensive and breaking the German front in the French summer offensives. They were active until the end of September 1918, less than two months before the Armistice of 11 November 1918, their numbers having dropped considerably due to attrition. After the war the surviving tanks were mostly rebuilt as utility vehicles but six Schneider tanks were deployed by Spain in the Rif War in Morocco and the type saw its last action in the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

Dude this was super on point and concise. Well edited in all the right ways.
cheers buddy! it turned out shorter than i thought, which is good.
I cannot agree more! All of my builds have a research phase and folder before any plastic or metal is touched. Steve Zaloga is one of the most prolific authors out there for Armor and WWII. His books are always informative reads and extremely useful for whatever vehicle I am building. Excellent kit and build, sir. We need more Great War armor, always.
cheers! i would not say that the research is half the job, but it certainly plays a very big role. i could have built this kit out of box and no one would have cared, but in this case i wanted to go the extra mile and make the model stand out a bit.
truly looking forward to the fruition of this project. a ww1 dio will be a most impressive addition to the collection. keep up the good work and thanks for all the editing you've out in to this
thank you mark :) i have a lot of interest in ww1 and as a francophile i am wondering why i am not dealing with that subject more often?!
Very impressive, I really like how you add missing details and tips on how to assemble it as well as filling in the holes. Nicely done !
thank you mike :)
Really love this channel. Obscure tanks from WWI are a thing that I love and this channel gives me a better look at what I am purchasing. Thank You.
thank you very much for your approval :) i do ww1 subjects from time to time, not as often as i´d like to maybe. mainly figures.
Great build Michael! Thanks for sharing the whole process :) The hole filling projectile tip is funny and useful. Love these "ugly" monters from WWI
Felis Barcinonensis my favorite "Ugly" would be the St. Chamond assault tank
Yes. I've got the Takom version; One wonders how could they even move with those bulky low hulls and wobbly little tracks. When I build it I'll probably show it trapped in mud and rubble
cheers felis :)
What a great way to spend part of my Saturday morning, watching you build an interesting kit. well done Michael, I enjoyed that 👍. can't wait to see the finished diorama as your mud and still water techniques are excellent.
thank you for the appreciation :) i´m glad you like what i did so far.
I always admire your command of the English language, and your modelling ability is flawless - thanks a lot for another great video :)
thank you very much for your kind words :)
The assembled model looks great my friend! Thanks for putting it on RUclips :)
thank you :) it shows that going the extra mile pays off!
What an afwul looking crab masterpiece :) Nice progress so far Michael. Looking forward to see it painted with all these fancy WWI camo :)
cheers mate, i´m glad you enjoyed this! fancy camo indeed, that will be a nice change from field grey and olive drab.
a kit building review after a long time, looking forward to the next parts :D
cheers!
I think that hole in the rear is for mounting the exhaust pipe on the model without the enlarged fuel tanks. Great build, thanks for the review and build.
you are welcome! with regard to the hole in the rear plate, i agree, thats probably it.
Great job Michael, excellent build video. What an interesting looking tank, the dio should come up a treat.
thank you :) i want to keep the dio small, the tank and the figures will create enough interest.
Das war Spass, anzuschauen! Wieder ein nettes Video! Vielen Dank, Michael!
bitteschön :)
Can't wait to see what you make this into
i am excited as well :)
Hobby boss has to be one of the best model companies out there!
well, depends. i like their unusual subject choices!
Hamilkar Barkas yeah, that's something Tamiya doesn't do which is a shame, they just pick the most iconic of tanks.
Ughh your videos always make me want to build again! I am looking forward to seeing this completed.
Those tracks are wack!
cheers :) i hope i can continue with this series soon.
Cool build,Michael 👍It's hard to believe that they could even move. They weighed so much and were so underpowered....
indeed! cross country ability of a steel box..thats what it was :)
You described it,exactly ! 👍
Thank you so much for this, and your other videos. Learned so much and appreciate your efforts!
thank you very much for your praises :)
thanks for the video, funny looking tank but looks good, and i do like the look of those tracks, look forward to seeing it all dun.have a good 1..will nz
you are welcome will :)
Super!! Ich freue mich auf den 2. Teil des Berichts:-)
Vorfreude ist bekanntlich die beste Freude :)
Hamilkar Barkas Stimmt😁
Ketzerei!
ich bin ein wahrer ketzer :D
freut mich wenn es gefallen hat!
Very nicely one sir, some good tips as well.
thank you very much :)
I'm excited for part 2!
me too :)
seit januar kam jede woche eins :)
Wieder sehr interessant mein Bester !
Great video as always!
cheers!
another excellent quality build! can you give me some advice please? I'm hoping to build a diorama of an Sdkfz 251 undergoing maintenance in Russia, in autumn 1942. I've built the '251, and know what equipment I'll need. can you recommend any affordable 1/35 trucks and figures suitable for a muddy scene away from the fighting?
cheers! ICM makes a bunch of very nice german trucks and the zvezda l4500 truck is very good, too. when it comes to figures, there is a masterbox figure set called "auto repair crew" that would fit in.
Hamilkar Barkas thank you! I'll have a look at them.
Great job, BTW what kind of sanding sticks are you using. Thanks.
they are albion alloys sticks and also selfmade ones: sections of an old pocket rule, double sided tape and sanding paper. the selfmade ones are technically actually better and cost almost nothing to make.
Thanks a lot, i very respect your works.
that is very much appreciated, thank you very much for the approval :)
Nice work! What gel are you going to use to represent the clear lens?
i´ll probably use micro crystal clear or wood glue.
Won't either of those dimple once they dry? I guess you could use a large amount then sand and polish it down; or build it up in layers.
The reason I ask is because I always run into this issue with the vision blocks on armored vehicles. Any headlights / spotlights are usually large enough to show any flaws where as the vision blocks are not as noticeable. I've tried different gels, liquid glass for bead making and clear glues. They work on small lenses / areas; but for larger ones I always end up cutting one to shape from clear packaging plastic.
One thing I haven't tried yet is clear, non-shrink silicon caulking. I know it does not dry crystal clear; but for certain cases it just might pass (Soviet WW2 headlights come to mind).
Keep up the great work. Watching you has always been an inspiration.
Well, wood glue becomes slightly foggy and crystal clear is designed for that prupose and works like a charm. i used it a couple of times before.
I'm certain what ever route you take it will come out looking good. You've shown your skill at modeling repeatedly so I have no doubt the end result will be a work of art.
I need this kit in my stash. I have this overwhelming urge and want to build a ww1 dio with this tank and infantry. Attacking a German trench.
Good idea! This kit is good, but the tracks are really not fun at all to build. It is possible, but very tedious...
Still no Sturmpanzerwagen Oberschlesiein model anywhere
You could have filled the holes with putty. Cover the outside, with tape or something like that, and apply putty from the inside. Worked well for me last time when I had to fill a hole. it has to be open from the inside ofc. I don't know if that was the case with this build.
of course i could have done that, but my intention was to show an alternative approach. a very easy one indeed and less messy.
Hamilkar Barkas that's quite nice actually. watching the same tricks over and over again becomes quite boring over time and I like change. it's a very nice build and I appreciate your effort to make the shield on the roof stand up, the little things make it unique. Grüße aus die Niederlande (if I spelled that correctly ;)
I have a question about pronouncing years in German
When I want to say "1916", would I say Neunzehnhundert sechzehn all the time? Or would it be appropriate to just say "Neunzehnsechszehn"?
neunzehnsechzehn works for any normal conversation and when refering to years, but as soon as you have to be more specific you will use the actually correct term neunzehnhundertsechzehn (for the year) or eintausendneunhundertsechzehn (for any other numbers).
Thanks for the answer
great great great
Thanks :)
this superior to those the Brits used.
likely Hobby Boss lost a worker and the new person was not up to speed. btw, did you hear of the guy who was at tweeter, on his last day, he closed Trump's account - lots of fun for us anti-Trumpers :)
Wo bekommst du deine Fachliteratur her??
