I am a clothes, shoe, and toy hoarder because I don't want to give away things that are from a long time ago that hold memories.
I have this problem too, sometimes!
I'm probably the worst for photos - although thankfully those aren't taking up too much storage.
But also outfits, tatty band shirts/posters, certain songs/albums, etc. can have vivid associations of a place/time in your life, or a special event, etc.
I have a really bad memory, so I fear losing/getting rid of some things and then no longer having the memories it evokes. I mean, I guess in some level the memories are in my brain, I just think that all the file index cards got put into Google translate, changed into Japanese, then Spanish, then into Xhosa, back into English, and then played with by a toddler and a cat! 😫
Sadly is a medical thing that's not going away, and has always been a factor, so I'm kinda used to it on some level, but there are definitely times when I've been guilted/embarrassed into getting rid of things (i.e. favourite but super tatty jumpers from college days, crafty bits, and a bridesmaid outfit where I could've reused the corset if I'd been more confident) and later really regretted that.
So I think I probably go in cycles - I'll have a period of being settled and not needing to move/having tonnes of storage and I'll allow myself to keep everything that has even the slightest attachment, but then something will happen - redundancy/major break-up/moving house and I'll feel the need/have to edit the collection(s) down, either in a similar break-up haircut kinda thing, or literally not having the space in the new wardrobe, etc.
Kondo doesn't work for me, though - too much sparks joy! ☺️😇

Also, I grew up poor to parents born just after the Second World War, and we had a very scrimp & save, reuse and repair, etc. upbringing, so I find that plays in to it too - 'I can't get rid of this, what if I need it again later?!' it feels wasteful to buy/make something and then get rid of it. Plus I only got stuff when I needed it, and never shopped as a hobby/social thing until my mid-20s, so keeping everything only became a problem when I finally had disposable income! I have very full wardrobe, but I generally only buy a couple of pairs of shoes a year but not get rid of the older ones unless they are super painful/dangerous (I have weak ankles so have to be careful about balancing on heels), or literally worn out and holey.
I do buy more clothes, but I don't think as much as you might expect from looking at the state of my wardrobe 😅 Especially because I like quirky and vintage stuff, so I don't have much problem with things becoming dated/out of style - or if they do I think my friends assume its deliberate! 🤞🤣 OMG I can't stop talking about this now, sorry!
