Crazy that these RSD reissues are selling for HUNDREDS of dollars online less than one month after Record Store Day. They've become a lot pricier since I recorded this review. Here's a distilled summary:
This one just hits different on vinyl. As predicable as it seems, I continue to fall for this racquet because it’s true. It’s all for the love of the music. A lot of people will hate me and think I’m a pompous a$$hole just for expressing my opinions. Dropping the needle on these Record Store Day reissues is about as close as you can get to hearing the music for the first time.
All you need is a decent stereo and some yard sale speakers. There were two unobtainable records missing from my psych collection: Gandalf’s self-titled album from 1969 and The Rain Parade’s “Emergency Third Rail Power Trip” from 1983. These records were released 14 years apart, but their similarities may surprise you.

    3:23 Faceless Bands
4:39 Lemongrass, The Color of Vinyl
    5:05 Three Original U.S. Pressings
5:21 Here Today, More Expensive Tomorrow
7:45 Gandalf Backstory 9:58 Gandalf Review
    12:53 Rain Parade Review
16:15 Rain Parade Bonus Disc Review
18:56 Why do I review albums?
    19:06 Good for the Soul
    19:17 ?'s for ART & MUISC
We are now 16 years into the vinyl collecting frenzy known as Record Store Day. You don’t see posters of Gandalf or The Rain Parade like you see posters of Jim Morrison, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead or Jimi Hendrix. Gandalf wanted to do for Tim Hardin what The Byrds had done for Bob Dylan.
The Rain Parade’s “Emergency Third Rail Power Trip” is such an absurd title that it sticks to your brain the way a marshmallow sticks to your teeth. This album soars into the stratosphere and stays there for the duration.
At first, the bonus disc seems like it is for super fans only. Side 1 felt like homework, it’s mostly 4-track demos of the albums songs, so they just kinda sound more lo-fi. But the more l listen to Side 2, the more I like it. I’d recommend not listening to the bonus disc on the same day as the proper album.
I would highly recommend “Emergency Third Rail Power Trip” to anyone who likes ‘60s psych music. It feels right at home. I love this music. I say, take my money.

I had that Rain Parade album, and I want it back!! "I look around" a very great track! Listen to the psychedelic guitar! Last year I picked up another later record from The Rain Parade.

Emergency Third Rail Power Trip is a mindblowing album! I showed their follow up mini album Explosions From The Glass Palace on my last video. I came close to pushing the button on the RSD Gandalf… might still do! Great album! Great video pal. Subbed up. Cheers, Jack

Right on, it sure is Jack! Thanks for stopping by! "Explosions From the Glass Palace" is on my list, but I really prefer buying from record stores vs. Discogs, so I'll prob wait til I find a copy in the wild. Love your accent btw, and The Soft Boys are awesome too, strange alternate album cover art! Watching your video now.

Picked these two up on RSD and I agree that they’re fantastic. Also picked up SRC. The other jackpot lost psych classic reissue from the 60s. Only pressed to 1500 copies like Gandalf but the going rate on discogs is much lower. Definitely pick it up if you haven’t! The Amboy dukes, wonderwall, and Dave pike were other awesome psych records I picked up. Loved the video man!

Awesome, thanks for stopping by! Gosh, I thought I'd heard every psych record by now, but I'm actually not familiar with SRC or Dave Pike. I think I have an OG of that Amboy Dukes that I haven't gotten around to listening to after a pretty big haul. Thanks for the recommendations, I will def check them out online!

It's so good! I hadn't really "heard" it before this. The vinyl experience has taken this album to a whole new level. What a great record it is.

@@VinylPiper I see your point, I never really gave that much thought. The only other American band I can think of that comes close to that territory is The Left Banke. Lots of keyboard wizardry, great vocals, melodies and lyrics.

The Gandalf is getting a general release on black vinyl. Buying RSD releases online right after RSD can be a mistake. The vast majority of RSD releases drop.

    • @giantorangerecords
      @giantorangerecords  29 дней назад +1

That’s great news! The whole point of me getting these on RSD was because they went for so much less than the going rate. But since I recorded this video the prices have gone way up!

@@giantorangerecords I wanted to get the Ramones 75 demos but the prices are too high right now. I have waited up to a year before the price dropped on a Bowie RSD release and a Sonics RSD release.

@@vinylrichie007 nice! That’s good strategy. I was jazzed about that Al Wilson album (RSD 2023) I showed in the B-Roll and that went from $28 to $11… I got that in November, and here it’s May and I still haven’t opened it yet. But yeah, that Ramones demos from this years RSD is on my list. Just gotta wait til the hype fades. I’ll have plenty to listen to in the meantime.

Yes, they’ve really surprised me with how good they are. Though I’ve heard them before, the vinyl experience is extra rewarding with these. It’s also been many years since the I’ve listened to these.
