I still ride my 2017 Z900 and it still rocks on stock everything. Brakes need an upgrade, but it's my do everything motorcycle. I can rip the canyons and use it as a commuter. Just stiffen up the preload on the front and you're good to go.
This is the second time we have been out riding and bumped into you guys filming , you have pretty much covered one of our circuits we ride , great roads to ride , we get them twice a week . It’s awesome
regardless of the hornet, the Z900 was one of the best all rounders. now this updated design and whole new electronic package make it even better. for the same price as before.
@ you can have those fancy el shit which is only preventing you to enjoy. these bikes are not so powerful that they would need all the crap back in old days on 1098s and suzuki k6 we had zero of those still survived no to mention fun factor.
I had a 2017 z900 for a few years. Massive fun for a tiny budget. I dropped down from a zx10 due to health issues and needed something easier and more comfortable to ride for a while. All I ever wanted from it was a bit more power.
I had a brand new 2017, fitted full exhaust, filter, rear shock, brakes. Did my first trackday on it, and rode all over Spain the next week. Loved it. Only issue was 6th gear (too long) lead to extra stress on the gearbox and eventually went. I hope they sorted that out!

If you’ve ever been on a bike with “good” suspension, you definitely know that it is very important to the quality and type of riding you can comfortably do. HP only matters if you’re sitting at peak power… which you aren’t doing the majority of the time you’re on a bike.
I might be wrong, but i think the base spec z900 costs as much as the Hornet SP. It might also be different in different markets/regions, but there where the base z900 costs about the same as the Hornet SP, the comparison is fair
I still agree that the Hornet is incredible value but where I live and I assume some other places as well the difference between this and the Hornet SP is over £3.5k
I think that mist people buy with their eyes on the bike, not the speck sheet. It's certainly why I got a africa twin not a 1300gs. I think the kwacker looks fab!
Be good to see what it produces once the restricted headers are junked...2WDW are fitting a set of M4's to theirs,already run it with the ECU done,cant wait to see the difference? Hondas are limited,probably sold out by now,especially the SP,so the Z900 is probably a good 2nd choice,standard one,spare cash spent uncorking it! I've walk past the Kawasaki stand for long enough,1000SX and the 400RR were the only things that appealed,but i like this,it's finally come of age...looks better quality,and C/C for the longhaul will sell it!
Bought a zx10r in July, was like you say, flat at the bottom banzi at the top. Problem was by the time you get to the top end rush it was doing ridiculous speeds on the road. Sold it and got an mt10 for more fun at real speeds.
I have the Z900RS, and it’s strong in the low and midrange, and still decent up top. I find it strange that the Z900 seems the opposite, maybe it’s the gearing as much as anything else.
I bought the same but I like the slow build as it makes it docile at road speeds. Until I put a full system on and had it remapped, now it’s banzai everywhere 😂
This is the normal upgrade for folks on a z650. The price delta between the 2 is a few bolt-ons, as u can get a new z900 under 9k brand new. The z900 isnt light, but it isnt like the hondas are light either. U.S. dont get the hornet, but the cb650r is heavier than a gsx8s... The z900 is a solid bike for the prices u can find them stateside...and less likely to get stolen than an mt
Looks like an interesting bike! I'm in the market for a new bike and this is close to the Hornet for me! Big thing that might not be of use during Beni shenanigans, but this has Cruise Control where the Hornet doesn't have Cruise. If you plan on using it as a commuting bike as well Cruise is a big plus for me. That will be quite some test rides in spring..

Honda issuing Hornets for long term testing maybe?😅 Agree it’s as if every reviewer gushes uncontrollably about Honda SP Hornet , trumpeting the low price , yet in Australia will cost over $23000AUD easily . That’s not cheap😢 The 24 model Z900 can be had for as low as $14200AUD …that’s a deal.
It's because Honda did the press release with the SP only and Kawasaki have done theirs with the base Z900. So that's all they can compare at the moment. Obviously, they will compare the base hornet to this and the SP to SE when available. Although do bare in mind that the hornet SP is closer in price to Z900 base than the SE in the UK
I love it. Also the Hornet SP is 3000 pounds more than the Z900 SE in Norway due to taxes 🇳🇴 I wish you could try the SE which adresses the issues you experienced by having better suspension front and rear and brembo M50 brakes.
Odd to me the over comparison to the Honda. Different power categories, and insurance categories. And the price difference while not huge is still substantial for many people.
Great bike for the money. It has been a great seller for Kawasaki all over the world. The suspension and front brakes issues you mentioned [ a bit soft] are improved considerably with the SE version. There is a huge difference in price and performance between this and the mighty ZH2 naked. A Z1100 naked would definitely fill that and sell well. Anyway great video chap.
It has a Quickshifter and Auto blipper, and Cruse Control. The only things missing from this machine. A bunch of mate's ride these and absolutely love them! They are a very capable platform.

As mentioned, I'd prefer a comparison between the closest models. Comparing this to the SP is a bit wrong in my humble. And where are the tests of the non SP versions? Admittedly, sub 10k for the Hornet SP is awesome,but it's 800 quid more. And did anyone see Katie's test SP? The welds look like they'd been done by a drunk toddler.
Some better pads might sort the brakes out, not sure about suspension though. You guys were on nice smooth roads, uk roads might prove a little too exciting 😂
They're an awesome engine, but I found it a very uninspiring bike when I owned one. Now on an MT09 and the spice of that engine is just next level, the only bikes I've had that eclipsed it were a Husqvarna Nuda and a Ducati 999
I’ve lost count of the number of times it was compared to the SP. Which is completely wrong. Rather, it should be compared to the base model Hornet 1000 as that doesn’t have the upgraded suspension and additional power.
How is the z900 a direct competitor to the CB1000 when the Honda makes 30 more horsepower pretty much. The prices might be similar but performance is not close. This is not a direct competitor lol, it's like saying the Mt10 is a direct competitor to the streetfighter V4 or the Tuono V4 or the ZH2 even the SuperDuke 1390. It's just not even close. 30hp is the difference between an early 2000s superbike like a GSXR1000 or a CBR1000RR and a modern day S1000RR or a modern day GSXR1000 or R1

Price is reasonable.. but.. I'd like just one level more power. Don't need a 200 hp hypernaked, but as a seasoned rider, I want that 150. I rode 120 hp in an only slightly heavier naked over 20 years ago! I don't know why it's hard to have an upper middle class, like the hornet, without the frills, for that exact that price from Kawasaki.Still, I wish it to become successful, I'd love to see it on the road!
2020 z900 owner here, if you're in the states get the Hornet out of your head because we're NOT getting it here!!! This is the best bang for your buck period!!! Wish reviewers would state which markets aren't getting the Honda so there's no confusion SMH.

The price difference means the SP is kind of between the two models (and a bit closer to the standard model) so it could go either way
SE has lower spec Brembo, i believe front suspension is the same and the rear is TTX. Still think Hornet would be better value.
It can always be fun to ride a lower powered bike fast compared to anything that has more power than 99.999% of all riders can actually use.

They’re not even manufacturing bikes at the moment, so no launches for the foreseeable
@FortyFourTeeth that's what I thought but some UK dealers are saying there are many built and their arrival in the UK is imminent. Given the 90 day situation that didn't seem plausible to me.

Thank you very much indeed Al, an honest and overall great review! I like the look of the bike and I can look past the levers. I really dig the green frame and the matte look. Price is reasonable.. but.. I'd like just one level more power. Don't need a 200 hp hypernaked, but as a seasoned rider, I want that 150. I rode 120 hp in an only slightly heavier naked over 20 years ago! I don't know why it's hard to have an upper middle class, like the hornet, without the frills, for that exact that price from Kawasaki.Still, I wish it to become successful, I'd love to see it on the road!

2020 z900 owner here, if you're in the states get the Hornet out of your head because we're NOT getting it here!!! This is the best bang for your buck period!!! Wish reviewers would state which markets aren't getting the Honda so there's no confusion SMH.

Horn in the correct spot, a cruise control and no stupid "always-on" indicators. It's a Hornet killer just because of those.
Aren't running light/turn signal combo lights a good thing? Extra visibility is always good right?
