I bought a leather chair from his store during the “If the Astros win you get 2X back”. Later that afternoon it was delivered, and later that evening Mattress Mack called me personally to check if everything was ok. I told him I really appreciated everything he did during Hurricane Harvey (he let displaced people stay in his furniture stores, then donated all of the furniture to people that lost everything) and it was a pleasure buying from him. He’s a class act all the way. By the way, Astros won the World Series and I got a check for twice what I paid for the chair.

That was 35 40 years ago and everyone thought he was crazy and anyone in Houston that even mentioned furniture thought of the crazy guy jumping up and down with a bunch of money. Not one thought of anyone possibly abusing that generosity (the way some cynical jerks were criticizing him for taking the "risk") and not only did zero theft occur but it was beautiful and inspiring how much they were all taking care of everyone in turn at the store.. I won't forget the pictures of the EMT's and firefighters etc sleeping on those very mattresses ❤️❤️❤️
