    Follow Up Video Coming Soon! This video is rough quality and i have some criticisms of the complete setup itself, primarily just the filter lol the filter they give you works but its as useful as internet explorer lmao it requires a lot of cleaning and the sand gets into the pipes. i wait for the waterflow to slow down then clean it monthly. turning off the filter while feeding always helps too but im tryna get this shit as low maintenance as possible so an upgrade will be coming soon.

    I am so happy that someone understand softshell turtles are a pain, I've had my turtle for almost 2 years and he's extremely active. I have a Florida Softshell and I've learned he loves superworms, but doesn't like minnows. Loves shinners from the bait store but not minnows. I really appreciate this video because I've been trying to find him a better set-up, he's (?) currently in a 40 gallon tank (which he surprisingly doesn't bump into the glass too often) and you've given me some really food ideas for him. Thank you.

    • @SugarEthnoherpetological
      @SugarEthnoherpetological  4 года назад +2

      I started mine in a tank, they say tanks aren't the best for turtles but with how much this species is honestly out of the water (miniscule) they probably will do fine if not better in tanks than tubs I used to love watching mine zoom around and even had a prop or two in there without him ever being damaged although the tank was pretty large 40-50 gallon and that was for a baby. These things get big now that it's a year later I'll update this video! I have much better recording equipment now rather than this potato of a video, I appreciate the support!

    Play sand is $5 for 50 lbs. at Home Depot and Lowe's. It comes prebaked in a 2,000 degree over so it's sterile (even though may want to add a teaspoon of vinegar to the first rinse if you use a bucket wash method). It works just as well but needs extra washing. I use play sand in all my aquariums/paludariums.

    Excellent video. Very informative.
    Neighbor boy brought one these guys to me a few weeks ago. He accidentally hooked him in the neck.
    Wow! Such a cool turtle! We have him in our Floridian 40 gallon tank to recover and release back to the creek.
    Our other 2 turtles we rescued are in or koi pond enjoying the summer.
    But seriously this bred of turtle is truly fascinating and seems very docile.
    We don't have sand but very small pea gravel. He just shovels all around and then goes to the second level and dives and hides in the pea gravel by the waterfall.

      Where I live on an Arkansas river I suddenly have not seen any softshell turtles for 3 or 4 years. It coincides with all the cheap chinese paddle boats for sale at the department stores bringing hords of people floating down all summer with their fishing hooks I think. The naturalists are just now realizing that softshell turtles are suddenly in serious decline for possible extinction. I am certainly extremely worried.

    How often do you change the water? Will tap water hurt it?

    • @SugarEthnoherpetological
      @SugarEthnoherpetological  2 года назад +1

      This species requires more frequent water changes than most as it has sensitive skin. Tap water is never recommended if you must use tap ensure you distill it first, treat it with reptisafe, or oxygenize it overnight in a bucket with a bubbler to get out most of the chlorine/flouride found in most tap water. I luckily live out in the country so we have well water which doesnt require treatment which I found out after I had tested it to ensure it was safe.
