I think big part of that is that they hired actual actors to play/act the roles during motion capture. They were acting their part that's why it looks so good and on point with voice over.
Look at the cast... Hamill, Oldman, Cunningham, Anderson, Mendelsohn, Strong etc. etc. etc. This would be a great cast for massive Hollywod blockbuster. This is not the kind of cast you find in games. Or or two actors of this caliber... at best. But CIG just loaded the cast with talent. And it's not just voice, it's full performance capture, all the gestures, facial expression etc. were captured with the audio. They used Andy Serkis' MoCap studio, Imaginarium. Serkis is also in the cast. And, if anyone is horribly disappointed in The Last Jedi, at least they can get a good Hamill action fix here.
Benefits of Roberts's time in Hollywood. He made contacts that payed off, something many game devs just do not think about. Heck it wasn't until recently that artists even knew what they were working on. I mean a lot of the bad acting was just because publishers did not tell them about the game, let them see it, and just gave them a long list of lines to read like some robot. And the difference in shows as in this, the actors have context, and the context helps believably of the performance.
Now I watch "game movies", cuz I'm poor, besides the point, this small mission, over an hour long, and just a taste, REALLY felt like watching a movie. Vast majority of the ship had English accents so take anyone from the ship and put them in the engine room and you would have that. Squadron 42 has been in development for around 12-13 years and hasn't released. Starfields development time clocks in at around 7 years from what the development team has said. Squadron 42 likely cost more than Starfield to make as well. Not sure why or how we can compare them? Starfield is also built to run on weaker hardware.. Star Citizen is not. I'm looking forward to Star Citizen ( Squadron 42 ), but let's not reach with the Starfield comparisons.
My favorite part starts at 54:00. When the pilot infiltrates the base from the moment he enters to the moment when the shooting starts. The music directing is superb. Put your headphones and listen how the music reacts on player's actions. It changes accordingly to what he's doing, where he is and what he is about to. My favorite moments are: when the player places the battery, when he goes up by the elevator and when he kills a slaver with the knife. So cool!
this is an automated music direction system, the music reacts to your actions and environment. so the music allways builds tension only when its needed... you cant use such a tech in a linear gameplay...
Yeah definitely. Voice actor has a really natural feel. Just looked up the full cast of voice actors and it's a very impressive list. I'm definitely rooting for this game
Coming from 2022, Star Citizen has really come far since then, looking at this, you can see all the changes and differences in things like the HUD, along with the similarities. I appreciate that they didn't try to polish it up and left all the bugs in, didn't try to make ti seem better or more polished than it is.
@@tobytoxd It's also cool how a lot of the things on the roadmap related to SQ42, right now, are things featured in this vertical slice. Everything from the AI at the beginning, the HUD and locker experiences, a military variant multitool, improving MT cutting, new flight mechanics, yadda yadda. Can't wait for whatever they have cooking behind closed doors at CIG rn to be unleashed.
Excellent! Well done! This was like watching a film and I was engrossed. I don't normally watch video game streams or videos this long but it was worth it.
14:15 that has got to be one of the best dialogues I have seen in any game. It feels so grounded, so real. I honestly was kinda touched by the captain’s dialogue. Incredible writing
i cannot get enough of the sequence at 24:42, like the navy hasnt needed to update their flight deck procedures in a couple hundred years to launch planes, absolutely love it
cant wait to play this someday! really awesome to get such a nice detail look at the Idris too. gotta be honest 3 years later and this STILL looks better then most games out there today lol wise words from the guy too dont let it get in the way of the rest of your life! here here.
8:40, "Basically, everything here could blow the ship up. Hmm, we should probably get a raise." You just took the words out of my mouth. That how a got my raise when the boss asked me why he should give it to me. :-)
This is very impressive. I like how the character's voices aren't over-acted, and aren't over-animated. Faceware tech seems to be working well here (assuming it's Faceware), but I can't imagine it wouldn't be with so much dialogue. The completed shopkeeper interaction is fantastic too, and I like the detail put into the flight deck crew and their signals to the pilots. The ships are impressive too. Nice to see Mark Hamill as part of this effort. Take that, DS!
This has nothing to do with Faceware. Faceware integration is for facial animation of the player character based on what you do in front of your webcam. This is for the online part (Star Citizen).
So good. So awesome. Your own private 200 million dollar movie! Excellent work! It's so nice seeing real professional actors in a production like this. This is the space game I've always wanted. Mark Hamill and everyone involved. Two thumbs up!
This looks really good and I'm really excited to play this when it's released. From a realism standpoint, a few things bothered me though. The dust clouds at the beginning were really very thick, almost atmosphere like. I would struggle to see that happening in space. Also, although the rings around that planet looked amazing, and I loved the way some debris was falling into the atmosphere. It looked a bit odd though that the rings were stationary above the planet, if they were that close to the surface they would have to be traveling at some rate to stay in orbit. I get though that that would be difficult if there is a waypoint in the rings and another waypoint on the surface quite close to each other. To be fair though, this is the best space sim I have seen, and I love the attention to detail they have been putting into it!
Those design choices are in here, because Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are a blend of a simulation and a cinematic action adventure at the same time. SC & S42 are not going for 2001: A Space Odyssey but more for a mix of e.g. Star Wars and The Expanse. Those unrealistic design choices are there to increase the visual and emotional drama. I like it! :)
I rewatch this and would nice to have updated version of this, but for sure it is not happening any time "too soon". Anyway PU with 100 players run and looks already better.

@@josevelazquez6944 But we know they have dedicated the vast majority of internal resources to SQ42 and that they are opening a massive office in the UK. They have grown rapidly. I wouldn't have said this a year ago, but I really think we'll get SQ42 in the next year or two. At least Ep. 01.
@@buzzfightbeer8023 yessss lil by lil we getting there!!!❤️
I never imagined watching this over four years ago that four years later, I'd still have no idea when Squadron 42 was going to release.
5 years later, here will are still lol.
But let's hope the expected price increase for SQ42 and the over the hush hush nature of this game's development throughout the last year is a sign towards a release sometime soon.
@@ranishkA123 well tbh the dev-time for SQ42 and SC is nothing special compared to other productions with less scale
starfield time XD, this 5 years ago looks 10x better. than loading door simulator
... it truly doesn't bother you that this clip is 6 years old and there's no sign of SQ42 releasing in even the next 5 years? Really? You guys are THAT brainwashed?
SQ42 is now : Feature complete
Considering it's Pre-Alpha WIP, it looks really good. Surely they showed us some of the more polished bits, and with just a few graphical glitches and clonky character position when going in and out of an animation. But all that should be improved.
Really good showcase of the single player!
ahahahaha very funny.
@@purefoldnz3070 lmao
Awesome gameplay, I can’t wait to play it! Also, nice Terminator reference at 16:55
16:50 "Phased Plasma rifle in the 40watt range" -- LOL :D 16:50
ohhhh now i get it
"hey just wat you see pal!"
Is the BEST xD lol !!!! Love it ! ( Terminator )
Luke Skywalker and is that the Onion Knight?
I like the voise acting in this game, seems much more genuine than the acting we get in most games these days.
Faawks yes it's Sir Davos:)
This game is a blessing
I keep feeling like a Xenomorph is gonna hop out the corner and start tearing ish up... lol.
SoonTM
@@ChrlzMaraz Alien humanoids are like that yeah..... but maybe there would be some more less intelligent and more unusual looking species down the line.
This is amazing! Thanks CIG for the crazy dream, your hard work over the years and thanks for not giving up and never saying it's impossible to do. +42
thanks for an amazing game that never released.
Do you think the main character is a lieutenant?
Firebrand no
Hmmm... it must be his name then, lol
If he's a lieutenant, you're a captain. Captain Obvious.
Lieutenant is his rank
This is midway in the game and the PC is at the rank of lieutenant.
Usually I never leave comments but this is worth it...
You should leave a comment then!
wait till you read my reply
I usually do not respond to comment but now is the time!
This is my reply to your comment. I usually drink coffee.
I'm going to respond, too. Tomorrow is Christmas.
After Starfield Igotta say CIG was beyond its time, once again ...
maybe if we could actually play squadron 42 yeah
Next year well enjoy S42 ! :)
@@rolistefanghien 🤣😂😂🤣😂 maybe in 2042
Squadron 42 has been in development for around 12-13 years and hasn't released.
@@rolistefanghienlooking more like 2026 unfortunately, highly likely to take even longer given CIG’s track record
These actors (Davos!!) are so good i feel like they are talking to me and i get cagey ;'D
16:49 ha, nice reference
This looks seriously good. Everything is on point
So cool!
Did you notice the vehicle at 57:00 ???
this is an automated music direction system, the music reacts to your actions and environment. so the music allways builds tension only when its needed... you cant use such a tech in a linear gameplay...
Except there's no gameplay. Just a tech demo where you go from waypoint to waypoint
This was completely linear
Is it just me, or does the character's voice just seem real instead of acted?
I mean the main character btw.
yeah was thinking the same thing. Plus I feel like everything feels like it belongs. I can't quite explain it, everything just feels like it's real.
I kinda understand what you mean, but also what do you mean. As in the expressions, dialogue, or what? :)
Yeah definitely. Voice actor has a really natural feel. Just looked up the full cast of voice actors and it's a very impressive list. I'm definitely rooting for this game
We already had a piece of the cake from their Lost & Found trailer. Not a surprise the same level of voice acting is still seen in this video
Coming from 2022, Star Citizen has really come far since then, looking at this, you can see all the changes and differences in things like the HUD, along with the similarities. I appreciate that they didn't try to polish it up and left all the bugs in, didn't try to make ti seem better or more polished than it is.
True! And the lighting and e.g. the quality of faces did improve during the last years. Even now this preview still looks amazing.
Even 6 years old this trailer is pretty decent! Hope to play it soon.
1:03:00 that death cartwheel
Lol up there with best death animations. :)
All that stuff. On one ship..
This game will be glorious
Excellent! Well done! This was like watching a film and I was engrossed. I don't normally watch video game streams or videos this long but it was worth it.
When your ship is bigger than a city in Skyrim....
Once in a while, I come here to watch this again, keeping dreaming about this game really coming out... But it's been so long...
agree
At least development still continues for it
So two years later here I am watching this again. Just thinking on all the improvements, tech they built. This game is going to be Epic
Yes Epic i agree.... and so is the wait!!!
@@jacksheet1032 so be it
More than 300 millions dollars and 8 years in making and still nothing. Yeah that's epic xD
Yeah... It's so epic that 2 years later they are scared to talk about it.
Merc Enum come on lol. Your imagination beats Spongebob lol
14:15 that has got to be one of the best dialogues I have seen in any game. It feels so grounded, so real. I honestly was kinda touched by the captain’s dialogue. Incredible writing
imagine this gameplay currently with all the work they have done since its release
This is never coming out. 4 years later and still nothing. It'll be 2030 by the time it releases & it'll look completely dated by then.
@@OC.TINYYY 👀
This is 6 years old its new to me again, because I've forgotten what was in it, lol.
What CIG should do is to take the exact same vertical slice but shows us the up to date version in 2021.

Interesting to see the progress after this years reveal
Currently 2024 this is the most continuous S42 footage I’ve seen
i cannot get enough of the sequence at 24:42, like the navy hasnt needed to update their flight deck procedures in a couple hundred years to launch planes, absolutely love it
cant wait to play this someday! really awesome to get such a nice detail look at the Idris too. gotta be honest 3 years later and this STILL looks better then most games out there today lol wise words from the guy too dont let it get in the way of the rest of your life! here here.
8:40, "Basically, everything here could blow the ship up. Hmm, we should probably get a raise." You just took the words out of my mouth. That how a got my raise when the boss asked me why he should give it to me. :-)
Back here after the new Vega 2 battle gameplay XD
1:03:00, shot in the chest boys, better do a frontflip.
laughed at that part
*DO A FLIP*
Gota die with style XD
That's beast acting right out of the 80s :D
Dayum, feels like I'm watching a movie!
The actors are fully, completely motion captured with the own in-house mocap tech of CIG. No digital animation in those scenes.
Here I am again.... late 2023.... hope it gets announced at citzon next month.
How do you feel now mate?
@@Mabifield Quite good after all the CitizenCon reveals. I'm hopeful we'll see a release late next year.
"Time is a funny thing... The more we try to catch it, the faster it runs away"
Every time I see this, it's more impressive.
So good. So awesome. Your own private 200 million dollar movie! Excellent work! It's so nice seeing real professional actors in a production like this. This is the space game I've always wanted. Mark Hamill and everyone involved. Two thumbs up!
I almost cry seeing this beauty.....
I like it! :)
Where are the tonks ?
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS GAMEPLAY IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER.
Worth waiting for. Keep it up!
I rewatch this and would nice to have updated version of this, but for sure it is not happening any time "too soon".
Anyway PU with 100 players run and looks already better.

Just watched the commentary version and it blew me away. Keep going with this level of detail and polish and this will be phenomenal.
I'd actually pay a few dollars per episode for a TV animation series like this. They nailed the space atmosphere in this one.
This is somethin' else! I'm in love with that Trejo babe at the end. Looks pretty slick to me.
As soon as this is an actual full fledged game I'm leaving Elite Dangerous for this. I can't wait to do this in VR!

Fun fact, there is an actor in this video, who played in the movie Cliffhanger
This was already impressive when it released five years ago.

Thanks for the great demo of the game. That is the kind of gameplay I never thought I would see before 2050 so your about 30 years ahead of the curve by my reckoning. It is hard to imagine what a game like this could become with long term post launch development. I look forward to seeing where all this eventually leads.
