Copeland is a monster on this. That extra tight Tama snare crack and the odd little 'ting' just makes it perfect. Together they were sooo good at that point.
This is their best song, hands down. The drumming and the bass are almost addictive. The Police were so talented ever since they formed in London in 1977. Real instruments and real singing, and great musicians, like Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Gordon Sumner.
This song was the one that Stuart said was the hardest to play, “What’s really hard is ‘Spirits in the Material World’. That’s hard”. There is a slightly Middle Eastern influence at play in his unique fill, with Copeland layering in the ‘pat your head, rub your tummy’ difficulty of occasionally omitting the bass drum on the downbeat to create a strange sense of jarring syncopation. As it happens, it’s hard to even place the downbeat, creating a rhythm section that you can get lost in.
This is the mere reality - Copeland oh my God (you must be sleeping), Summer the invisible sun (always shining), Sting the sting-bass-base-best frontman and incredibly technical beyond a blonde and fisic-du-role...

Just hit me what I love about this, all 3 band members playing/singing across each other’s beats and it comes together perfectly. The Police do stuff like that a lot but I think this is the best example.
I grew up with the Police in their heyday of the early-to-mid 1980's while studying at the University. It was the best of times....I just didn't know how great they actually were at the time.
Metallic, crisp, classical, jazz reggae. In the chorus, a sprinkle of gospel clap/funk and a testimony of our state. Spirits in a material world. Ghost in a machine-our bodies AND the systems/programs that we've built. SICK SICK! This is the one that made me buy the entire catalog. I was able to buy my own albums after they broke up. I was a kid in the mid 80s and became a fan right after they unofficially broke up.
Arguably one of the greatest albums of my generation. The synchronicity of the material world is the truth of the writers own aging and tongue, of course we were older then, once we figured it out. Kids today are way smarter and are dealing with much more as far as home life, just look at the parents. Mirror is hard..
"Kids are way smarter"... not sure about that. More indoctrinated for sure. My kids brought home a little homework from elementary school and like many kids including me when I was a kid, they complained. I said better get used to it because it's only going to increase... but I was wrong. From middle and now high-school they have had none. No homework. An ignorant populace is easier to control...
I've loved this band since I was young and I've never watched their music videos untill now and I gotta say, I love seeing how they just have fun with making music together, you can tell they all get in their own zone if you know what I mean and it all just comes together, SUCH A LEGENDARY BAND!!!!!!
With this song These guys were Waaay ahead of their time. Every word is on point. If it's something we can't buy their must be another way" CLASSIC LYRICS
Spot on. And this is no knock on guys like Bruce Springsteen and other activist performers, but this is a song that doesn’t pick sides or favor anyone. This is more of indictment on the entire system, all the while in a musically brilliant song
1981, Ghost in the Machine album was released!! I was 15 yrs old then.I immediately bought the album on vinyl.Great recording and of course brilliant performance by Copeland, Summers and Sting. Can't touch them!!!!
So even in '23, it''s still an astounding track to listen to, never get's old. A great achievment from an era where the musicians recorded their pieces in the song to tracks on magnetic tape, sometimes in one take. That's what made them good )) However, their creative song writing skills elevated it all, to great heights.
I can’t wait to hear your interpretation of this song will change in time, with a different perspective. Awesome to know that your enjoying such a great band at such an early age!
The drums on this song are very different than most rock songs, and shockingly simple. Love the way Copeland stays off the snare and uses the bass and high hat to establish the syncopated rhythm and give room in the song, but then periodically goes back to the snare for emphasis. Then the move back to a more typical rock drumming at the end of the song? Just brilliant.
As an old man, I can say I heard this same kind of comment now at less over 5 generations now nothing new under the sun give it a few years you will understand!
The band is drum driven and bass. Its now as an adult that I've understood just what Andy does and really I am in awe of this man. ANY other guitarist and The Police sound ceases to exist.
One of my favorite bands.....I love so many but if I could only choose one band I could listen to them for ever,... Stewarts ability to not use the snare in the middle of the verse is unmatched ....very brilliant drummer
It's not exactly complex. It's just that the syncopation is so relentless that it's very easy to get the wrong idea about where the measures begin and end.
@@chasemartin5373 - I'm not saying it's not difficult to keep up with. Here's the Copeland quote I could find on the matter: "[I]t is very sparse but, in fact, is *a rhythmic nightmare* for all three of us. ... *It is very simple* but it’s on the upside down of the back of nowhere.”

@vickybachert8298 I appreciate your enthusiasm, been their record buying, gig attending listener since the jump x!
I can‘t be the only one that thinks that the drummer is beautiful to watch when he plays
Copeland is a freaking machine! So precise!
One the best drummers that ever lived.
listening too
@@dookey71 And now film/TV composer. He's also the main composer for the Spyro the Dragon games 😁
Yes, he is. I love him also.
We are not bodies with souls.
We are souls with bodies.
This I know.
I love this song.
To describe our nature, I'd rather say "Ghost in a machine" ...
Spiritual beings having a human experience ✌️
Unique. The Police with 3 musicians redefine pop melody/counterpoint/rhythm. Just magic.
Same here. First song and album I listened to at 13 hooked for life after that
Arguably one of the greatest albums of my generation. The synchronicity of the material world is the truth of the writers own aging and tongue, of course we were older then, once we figured it out. Kids today are way smarter and are dealing with much more as far as home life, just look at the parents. Mirror is hard..
We've become a nation of excuse makers.
TRUTH
"Kids are way smarter"... not sure about that. More indoctrinated for sure. My kids brought home a little homework from elementary school and like many kids including me when I was a kid, they complained. I said better get used to it because it's only going to increase... but I was wrong. From middle and now high-school they have had none. No homework. An ignorant populace is easier to control...
Such a timeless classic The blend of reggae and rock in this song is iconic, and the message still resonates today. Love the vibe❤❤❤
I've loved this band since I was young and I've never watched their music videos untill now and I gotta say, I love seeing how they just have fun with making music together, you can tell they all get in their own zone if you know what I mean and it all just comes together, SUCH A LEGENDARY BAND!!!!!!
That fade out when Copeland goes to the ride cymbal is nasty. I miss those killer album fades. That’s how it was done.
Always wait for that bit!
That's right! Leaves you wanting more! Cant stand todays music that just stops dead like a derailed train.
Bring back the fade out!
Only the 80s....
Stops dead what your comment disappears. Anyway the Police were the shit in the early-mid 80s
He recently said it was one of the most difficult songs to drum to on Rick beato2
There is no bloody revolution
@@jamesvazquez2491 🤣🤣🤣🤣
1981, Ghost in the Machine album was released!! I was 15 yrs old then.I immediately bought the album on vinyl.Great recording and of course brilliant performance by Copeland, Summers and Sting. Can't touch them!!!!
Sting on bass & vocals. Not an easy feat! He makes it look effortless. This song makes alot of sense in 2020 too. Scary.
je pense la basse faite au synthé clavier.... mais genielae oui !
The bass line is awesome but the drums conpliments it. They go hand in hand! It’s like the drummer is in his own world but insync with everyone!
This song is certainly in my top 5 Police tracks and has been since it first came out, I was 11.
Me too coming in on it more recently!
4 me my all time favorite. These lyrics so strong en still active
Yeah me too, I had it on cassette and wore it out from playing it so much .
6 I think
So even in '23, it''s still an astounding track to listen to, never get's old. A great achievment from an era where the musicians recorded their pieces in the song to tracks on magnetic tape, sometimes in one take. That's what made them good )) However, their creative song writing skills elevated it all, to great heights.
2:23 Outstanding . This little moment of video frozen in time . Young , good music , priceless to me.
This song makes me feel great whenever I hear it. The sound, vibe, and lyrics just makes me happy and I just turned 11
Felicidades, Por tu cumple años y por el gusto de ESCUCHAR A LOS POLICIAS. MUCHAS FELECIDADES.
@@franciscorafael7975 thank you
good for you!
I can’t wait to hear your interpretation of this song will change in time, with a different perspective. Awesome to know that your enjoying such a great band at such an early age!
There is a lot to be gained from learning their many great songs
The drums on this song are very different than most rock songs, and shockingly simple. Love the way Copeland stays off the snare and uses the bass and high hat to establish the syncopated rhythm and give room in the song, but then periodically goes back to the snare for emphasis. Then the move back to a more typical rock drumming at the end of the song? Just brilliant.
You noticed that too that's fuking genius
Love this band!!! SO unique and nothing compares to them!
Andy Summers is one underrated guitarist
True but one of the most respected among musicians
@@josephgus5638 Oh absolutely! Had the chance to see him front row on his most recent tour and he was insane good his solo work is amazing as well!
Totally great
Everybody in this band was underrated- due to the huge amount of talent coming out at that time, and MTV was on fire 🔥
Not a lot of guitar on this track!
I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in the 80s. This kinda music will never be duplicated.
Bullshit, we will do it over.
Your Absolutely right
@@malikjenkins9693 Yes, Im.
Me too
As an old man, I can say I heard this same kind of comment now at less over 5 generations now nothing new under the sun give it a few years you will understand!
The band is drum driven and bass. Its now as an adult that I've understood just what Andy does and really I am in awe of this man. ANY other guitarist and The Police sound ceases to exist.
Police is the best band of 1980's a past world we all would like to live in, Nostalgy.
ha ha yeah you are right there, when the world felt like a real place not a bad dream..
They were a good band but not the best
No its depeche mode😂
It probably wouldnt get anywhere nowadays as the kids would hate it and they would be seen as being too old.
It all went by in theblink of an eye i miss those days so much my teens were great days thing is at the time you dont realise it till your old n grey.
The Police are one of the most talented, productive bands. All the members contributed so much to this iconic band.❤
The greatest snare in Rock/Pop ever
One of my favorite bands.....I love so many but if I could only choose one band I could listen to them for ever,... Stewarts ability to not use the snare in the middle of the verse is unmatched ....very brilliant drummer
Dude, you are so right! Just notes from Stewart. Good look (listen?)!
As a musician I can say that this song has a very complex Rhythm to it super difficult to duplicate
It's not exactly complex. It's just that the syncopation is so relentless that it's very easy to get the wrong idea about where the measures begin and end.
@@fdsfsdfsd1552Copeland literally said it’s their most complex rhythm track, hands down.
Stewart Copeland himself has said the drum beats on this song are extremely difficult
@@jameskipp1657 - And I never denied that. I'm just talking about the complexity or simplicity of it.
Those drums!! One of the greatest in history
Heard this on the radio earlier . I hadn't realised how good this tune was .Thanks
Sting plays an awesome bass line. Just like in, "Every Breath You Take."
He sure does!
Was easy on the eyes too.
With out doubt one of best bands of all time
SUCH AN AMAZING TRIO. DEFINATELY MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF THEIRS. THAT BASS LINE COUPLED WITH VOCALS IS AN IMPRESSIVE FEAT.
Love Copeland's drumming on this song. So nice.
I just connect to this song in a way I’ve never experienced before. A true legendary piece of music.
Stew's drumbeat into the chorus: bloody magic. 👌 👏🏿
It POPS like a bottle of champagne. He's got that Remo skin tuned tighter than a mosquito's ass. Oh Stewart.
This song still sets a certain mood and vibe 40 plus years later,,,❤
