Hello again, Dave. Yes I've been examining your tacho readings and comparing them with other 350s from the 1950s and into the sixties. Bikes I've ridden such as the 350 BSA B31 with similar weight and performance. Your readings tally exactly with those stated in the road tests. And interestingly (really Peter??) if one looks at the price of a similar machine in 1962 (I have some magazines from then) and allow for inflation (Bank of England states £100 in 1962 is now worth £2674,then our 350s are pretty much the equivalent price. Fuel consumption much the same too. So many thanks for the readings from your tacho 👍
Good evening Peter, sounds like some interesting research has been taking place up there 🙂Interesting about the price comparison between 1962 and today. Excellent value for money . 👍🏻🙂
You've got some terrific rides ahead planned for this year and to have your Scram in Barmouth gives you brilliant access to some of the most amazing scenery. I'm so envious but I know you'll be sharing all of it with us. Really looking forward to revisiting those parts of Wales that we cycled over between the late 70s up until eight or so years ago. The new exhaust sounds good on the Hunter and wonderful to see those country stations. There was something lovely about those stations back when they had converted the gas lamps to tungsten. Now you have to visit, say the Severn Valley Rlwy to experience their 'charm. Either that or watch old black and white British films like' Brief Encounter ' or' Oh, Mr Porter '. ' Great stories and a fascinating ride. Thanks Dave.
Hello Peter, yes I’m really looking forward to the tours we have planned for this year. I joined British Rail in August 1992. At the time it was being prepared for privatisation and there had been very little investment. After it was broken up and the running of the trains franchised, investment can back and a lot of new rolling stock was introduced infrastructure including stations and signalling power supplies started to be invested in upgrades and renewals. Unfortunately Railtrack the predecessor to Network Rail, and the less scrupulous large Infrastructure Maintenance Contractors engaged in practices that resulted in several major disasters. This brought about the creation of Network Rail and the transfer in house of maintenance. I left the industry in 2000 but returned in 2002 as an Electrification and Plant Project Engineer, delivering electrical power renewals projects. There’s a fantastic video on RUclips chronicling the electrification of West Coast Mainline during the 1960’s and it shows a substation in Willesden that I’m currently Engineering Lead for the renewal of the High Voltage Switchgear. A bit of an upgrade from changing lamps on stations in the countryside 😁
Wow Dave thank you so very much for your glowing recommendation. Yes it's lovely as you say to know that folk enjoy what we do. We love doing it and sharing what we do so it's all pleasure for us. Great to have those readings from the revcounter.. Wonderful ride through those lanes - who'd have thought that as you journey along the M6 all this is waiting to be explored either side. Many thanks for sharing all you do, Dave and yes please I for one would be really interested to see rebuilds of those two bikes. It's a lot of work needed filming and building without someone filming it for you. Catch up with the second part of this ride on my return. See you later, Peter
Thanks Dave. It was nice to be out on a bike again, even if it was only vicariously through this video ! I can't wait to get out on the Meteor again but at the same time I have to be patient. I don't want to prolong this thing any longer than necessary ! I think you were always onto a loser trying to keep the bike clean on this one Dave ! It was just too wet ! Thanks for the ride and an education in the diversity of railway lighting. I now feel as though it could be my specialised subject, should I ever choose to go on Mastermind 😆 Take care Dave and good luck getting the Hunter run in asap 👍 Garry & Ruby ❤🐕
Hello Garry and Matron Ruby, sorry to hear you’re still under the weather. There’s nothing worse than wanting to get out on the bikes and not being able to, but I’m sure you’re doing the right thing getting yourself fully recovered! Yeah I set out on a ride fully intending to avoid getting the bike dirty, and I can guarantee there’s some smattering of filth lying in wait for me to show up! 😂😂 Focus is now on finishing running in pocket rocket ready for spring 😁 Get well soon Garry… and Ruby… increase the administration of the meds, we need ya boy back on his bikes 😂😁👍🏻
@@MerciaMoto Ruby says "I'm on it Dave", although she does need to stop videobombing Freddie Dobbs to do that. Don't worry, all will become clear in tonight's brief video. Be sure to check out the link in the video description to see Ruby pestering Freddie Dobbs in the north of England 🤣 Cheers Dave. Slowly getting there I think ! 🤞 Garry
Nice chat Dave, you brought back some memories of my days as a spark, not on the railway of course but certainly of the lighting issues you mention. As an apprentice, I had to change the end caps and other bits of the fluorescent lights in a pig farm, they rotted due to the acidic atmosphere. Some nice tours lined up.
Thanks Alex, we certainly repaired a lot of lighting on that job, I really miss those simpler times. I’d go back and do it again in a heartbeat. Yeah, never been to Norfolk and Ireland should be a great Experience 🙂👍🏻
Great video and chat, thanks👍 I'm excited to fit a tacho on my Hunter when I can get one. I'm on the waiting list at Hitchcocks and they expect new stock at the end of Feb. I'm itching to have a tinker!!
Hi Dave nice to hear about other people’s working career, also good to hear what they are up to now, and lanes explorer what a grand chap lives not far from me, been subscribed to Peter for some time, he gave me some words of encouragement to have a go a RUclips vlogging, so far got the camera and some sundry bits and just looking at the editing lark, could be out there soon, but thanks for the video, I also have a hunter love it, take care look forward to next episode
Thanks Ted, glad you enjoyed, one in a million is Peter and exceptionally gifted, the model boats he makes are incredible. You really should take those next steps and start making those videos. I started out just wanting to keep a record of our tours and rides out, a sort of video equivalent of a photo album / scrap book. Encouragement for folks like Peter and others has resulted in it now becoming a serious hobby and I’ve made some marvellous fellow enthusiast friends to boot. I’ll look forward to seeing your first video. 👍🏻😁
