My grandfather always said moderation in all things. Its good to give but you don't have to always give of all you have. Use your judgement. I dont think BigDaws (and a lot of people in the comments) understood what she was saying.
Basically, she said its cool that the guy is thankful cause he got rewarded for his generosity but to also watch out for obvious scams (“such a racket”). Its cool to be generous but sometimes you’ll see people at gas stations saying stuff like “Hey I got stranded and my family really needs to get back to X city and im out of gas, could you give me 20$ for gas?” and you give them 20 bucks, next thing know you come out of the store after paying for your gas and you see that same person saying the same thing to other people (happened to me once), those situations are scams.
Obviously this isnt an excuse to be cold hearted and you can just analyze the situation for yourself to see if you’re getting scammed or not.
She could have explained it/handled it better and not make things awkward but after all she does have a point.
I think if anything she solidified the moment for that guy. He seemed rooted in his decision. Around here it's popular for guys to walk around saying they just got out of jail and ask for some change, if I have the time I just buy some food for em. If it's a scam, who gives a shit
