I’m not a big fan of a lot of her music, but Carrie Underwood has been one of the best singers of the last 15-20 years without question. She’s in possession of one of those voices that both soothes you and blows you out of the water and she’s not slowing down.
Vocal masterpiece. Her angelic tone mixed with the amount of power and projection she has...it’s just incredible.

If you compare this video to the one of her at the Grand Ole Opry singing "How Great Thou Art" back in 2008, you can really tell how hard she's worked to improve her technical skills as a singer in the last 12 years. Back in her immediate post-Idol years, she was mainly going off of her raw talent, but she's is leaps and bounds above that now. Pop-country will likely always be her bread and butter, but it's obvious that she absolutely loves doing these Christian gospel hymns, because she goes all-out every time she sings them.

I watched the first several seasons of American Idol and I picked up the phone and voted for only 2 contestants: Katherine McPhee and Carrie Underwood. Carrie's rendition of "Crying" (big hit for Roy Orbison) had me almost crying!
You sound like a true follower of Jesus. I was so blessed to come across this video. I'm a worship leader, and I use Carrie Underwood's version of O Holy Night to try and make vocalists understand how important it is to really connect with the lyrics so you sing from the depths of your heart - which also helps the congregation be led into the Throne Room. Her phrasing is also exceptional. The way she holds the one breath from "Noel" all the way to the end of "oh night" is just spectacular. Great singing, but as someone on the technical side of theater what I noticed was the completely professional handling of the microphone. Notice as she sings notes that may overwhelm the mic or may be a bit screechy or may be a bit strained how she moves away from the mic and even turns her head to project away instead of at the mic. This really aids the audio tech and makes his job easier. And, of course, makes her sound better. Very professional.

You should listen to this again, and when you listen, close your eyes. Listen for the pure, non-vibrato notes and then listen to how she spins that vibrato up at exactly the right tempo, which is literally, triplets to the tempo of the music. Carrie Underwood can sing to me every night and it never gets old, and the best part about her is, she is so bubbly and hilarious and self-aware. From the first time I saw her on American Idol making chicken cluck sounds for Simon Cowell (one of the most hilarious things I have seen... and unbelievably good chicken sounds) to her hit songs like Jesus Take the Wheel and Inside Your Heaven, this is a gal that is passionate and hungry, and I love that. She is so endearing and it makes my heart melt, and so so humble, which I love most. She knows she is a talent, on loan from God, and these are the people I enjoy most.

Thank you. Your video, along with Carrie Underwood, made me realize how much I was happy to be with my family for Christmas.
I first heard this hymn on home alone when I was a kid and it has been my favourite Christmas hymn since then. I can never sing the "fall on your knees" part without crying. It always made me want to actually fall on my knees.
Christmas is so hard this year. I've struggled so hard with my faith since Feb 2019. I lost my dad on the 10th of January and one month, one week, and one day later cancer took my Mom. I have no family except my children. I'm married but we have a very odd marriage to say the least. Tara, how do you keep your faith? It would mean the world to me to talk to you about this if you have time. Have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Years!
