This is one of the only sci-fi movies that actually has a proper explanation for a lot of key points and turns out to be true.
The only false thing about the book and movie is that mar's sandstorms cant be that strong.
But the book was made before that dicovery.
no Weir knew it but it was thematically more appropriate for mars to throw the first punch.
Interstellar?
The book does a better job of explaining the hydrogen explosion. 10/10 would recommend the audio book.

Esp when he says things like that he didn't account for the oxygen he's been exhaling lolol
I love this scene. It's great in the book too, because it took him a lot longer to figure out what was going on since he wasn't doing clean burns and was filling the hab with straight hydrogen without realizing it.
The last entry of his log ended as "Things are looking up. I may actually survive this." The next entry started with "I AM FUCKED AND I'M GONNA DIE!"
And there are more entries like that! TvTropes calls this the "Gillian Cut".
The book is so much more entertaining

One thing I never got about this movie was just how famous this guy would be when he got back to earth. I mean your rescue is projected on billboards in Times Square, with billions of people watching worldwide. This man easily would’ve been the most famous person of the modern era.
Edit: just to clear the air, at the end of the movie it just cuts to him sitting on a bench in what looks to be a university campus. They don’t show what was probably 5 years or so worth of talk shows, bestselling autobiographies, etc.
he deserves it though, first human to live on mars
What don't you get again?
The only thing that bothers me about this movie is that the US government would never spend hundreds of billions of dollars to bring back one person from Mars. That would never happen.

Been there, done that. The ringing goes away pretty quickly.
The most heartbreaking scene in this entire movie, to me, is when the HAB is lost and the camera shows the potato plants all frozen to death. Watney spent days to weeks getting those things to finally grow. That one shot absolutely ripped my heart out. Then followed by him screaming "GOD!!! GOD, GOD!!!" is just heartwrenching.
at least he got a good harvest
In the book he was way more screwed as he ended up upsidedown in the decompression room away from the hab... He had to come up with a way to get out and back inside.. it was hectic.
100% right.

It's even worse for him in the book. He forgets that no reaction is 100% effective, so accidentally floods the Hab with excess hydrogen, therefore risking a massive explosion.
If he burns it in a ratio favoring oxygen he’d burn all the hydrogen before it gets out. But yeah… that would literally never cross my mind lol

This makes me want to try harder in physics and chemistry so in case I ever get stranded on Mars I'll know what to do
Getting stranded on mars like 20+ years from now is quite rare. And i dont even know when the first starship will reach mars that has been launched by space X. So getting stranded in mars is quite impossible
In order to be sent to Mars you more than likely have to have a PhD in something because you're researching. Mark Watney had a PhD in botany with a masters in mechanical engineering
Study all you want, You have to be important enough to make it to Mars in the first place. And that’s a VERY exclusive club that most of us will never be able to get into.
Paradoxically studying hard improves your chances to be stuck on mars, since we only send very well trained people at first and you can't get stuck there if you never go in the first place.
This is honestly one of the best sci fi/ realistic fiction movies ever

I LOVE "The Martian", not only because it's a splendid film, but because it's one of only two films in recent years ("Limitless", with Bradley Cooper, is the other) that actively celebrate the power -- the sheer BEAUTY -- of intelligence. American popular culture is generally anti-intellectual to its core; TV shows like "The Mentalist", "Bones", and "The Big Bang Theory" convey the message that, if you are unlucky enough to be cursed with a brain, you will either be a sideshow freak or an active sociopath. ("IT'S MUCH MORE IMPORTANT TO F-E-E-E-L-L-L" is the perennial message -- as if the two were mutually exclusive.) Mark Whatley can make Mars "fear his botany powers", and still has muscles and gonads. A VERY healthy role model.
-Makes a mistake most think tanks probably would have made, given his situation.
-Calls himself stupid.
Boy oh boy I would CHERISH the day I elevated my thinking to that level of "stupidity".
Funningly enough, in the book he takes into account the mistake in the movie and he wears a helmet with oxygen from the beginning. The exploring occurs because he didn't take into account another thing which is far more hard to realise but also calls himself stupid lol
@@MrPabgon In the book he doesn't take in account this mistake. He realizes he's not burning all the hydrogen he thinks he's burning, but well after beginning the process and by a time the hydrogen in the habitacle has grown to really dangerous levels. That's why he spends a whole night in the vehicle, while he thinks on ways to safely burn the extra hydrogen that's now floating in the habitacle without blowing everything up.
So, the explosion that happened in the book didn't happen because of this, but he makes the mistake anyway. later on, yes, he blows for an unrelated reason, and then is when he calls himself stupid :).
@@ramjb Oh I thought I remembered reading he was wearing a helmet so the oxygen he exhales isn't a problem
@@MrPabgon no, just a normal breathing mask, he didn't put his envirosuit within the habitat and some of the oxygen he was breathing was escaping through the seal breaks around his nose, etc

This scene doesn't exactly make sense as portrayed in the film. "The excess oxygen he's been exhaling?". That doesn't make sense when he is breathing the Hab air, with no oxygen mask or anything. He'd actually be reducing the available oxygen by breathing, so it doesn't really work.
However, the novel has a slightly different scene that actually works and makes sense. For whatever reason it was changed for the film. In the novel he messes with the Hab systems so it pulls all the oxygen from the air, replacing it with I think nitrogen to maintain pressure so he doesn't need to work in his Eva suit. As he works, he is breathing from an oxygen tank and mask, which leaks oxygen and as he exhales even more is released as our lungs don't take it 100% of the oxygen we inhale. He would then squirt out a little O2 into the building hydrogen to have controlled burns, limited by the available oxygen. If I recall correctly he realizes this before he lights up, and panics because the Hab is now a large bomb.
Or you know, he accounted for the oxygen he reduced by inhaling but forgot to account for the oxygen he added back by exhaling
Idiots saying we dont exhale oxygen, but Carbon dioxide. Inhaled air is 20.95% oxygen and 78.08% nitrogen, including small amounts of argon, neon, helium hydrogen and carbon dioxide. What we breath out is 15% oxygen and then carbon dioxide from our blood stream and other gasses. Breathing out, he would have definitely altered the oxygen levels. And not calculating them properly, more than likely would have been worse than that was in that environment.
In inspired air(the air which we take in),
There is 21 % oxygen and 0.04% Carbon dioxide.
In expired air (air which we take out),
There is 17% oxygen and 4%Carbon dioxide.
Just to clear up!
@@crapbag7674 you are correct (environmental fluctuations can definitely change O2 from 15 to 17%) But to be fair. I never mentioned any percentage of expired Carbon Dioxide. Oxygen expiration debate, was what I was referencing. Glad you made your response respectful, polite, and rooted in fact. Internet needs that more than ever.. cheers!
@@BOOSETO Just Flexing😉😉😉😉😉
@@crapbag7674 and the percentages we exhale are perfectly breathable. That's why mouth-to-mouth emergency procedures work. If we used all the oxygen we inhale with each breath, then the exhalation would have no oxygen left and the procedure to revive people who're suffering from axphysia wouldn't work at all...

@@reigndrops4090 that's what I thought but when he goes to the other site there's an entire ship already there.
No, they didn't. In the book there is a Mars Descent Vehicle (MDV) and a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV). They took the MDV to the surface, but their flight was super efficient so there was plenty of fuel left over, and then took the MAV back to orbit.
