  • this performance of Erik Satie's gnossienne #3 by Reinbert de Leeuw is the frst of the Satie extended project. the performance is edited to create one single, continuous piece lasting about an hour, after the model of vexations by the same composer which asks the perfomer to repeat the material 840 times. it was inspired by a dream of being trapped inside a piece of music. i have not altered the recording in any other way.
it is accompanied by the images of M Escher.

I was introduced to the Gnossiennes during a difficult time in my life. I felt deeply sad because of a chronic loss, friends and family alike.
I was given license to feel sad by Satie's works, and I realized that sadness isn't something meant to be eradicated, but felt so that the heart can be touched, so that life can be richer.

Exactly the same for me, chronic loneliness and loss, emotional trauma... And Satie gave me this quiet melancholic place to contemplate and welcome my pain in peace. Pure melodic silence.
I learned the 1st and 3rd Gnossiennes in a day and I'm now learning the 2nd one.
