Nice video! I didn't realize you could use a QWERTY keyboard with the MPC. Another way to achieve this is to use List Edit. Then you can actually use the Shift button ON the MPC while you freely select (the Velocity field of) as many hits as you want. Once you've done that, you can use the main Jog Wheel to raise and lower the velocity levels of all the events you've selected at once. Using this method, you can also adjust the timing, probability, panning, and a bunch of other aspects of hits/notes.
That's true. You can raise and lower the velocity value of all selected notes at once, which is cool. However, there is no way to set or enter a FIXED velocity value of all the notes at once while using just the MPC alone, which is what I'm trying to do. I really wish there was!!!! I plan to try it with a QWERTY keyboard.
Nicely found dude. Multi select is one of the most common options in all daws to my knowledge. Why MPCs dont have this option as a button on the grid editor is just crazy to say the least.
That’s crazy! I was literally just wishing that was possible last night while selecting my closed hats on the last beat I made. I knew about using a keyboard but the whole shortcut possibilities never crossed my mind. Nice discovery man.
Yea that would be nice! I was hoping there was just like your saying..maybe transport controls like a play with the space bar..I didn't find anything else but I'll keep searching and requesting in the future
Wow…I thought that Akai had abandoned the QWERTY keyboard and you no longer could hook it up. I remember back in ‘17 when it had more things you could type but after several updates things started disappearing. I was REALLY hoping with the 3.0 that this would come back (glad to see it’s still available) but I’d be nice to see Akai fix it so you could select all, every other note etc without having to waste time doing individual. Still great that you found this thanks. I’m going to try a mouse on it now too!
I don't think the mouse works at all but yea I remember that too, more of the characters used to work. The tab button also works. Tell me if you find a purpose for that..it allows you to move around the screen and select different sections.
I haven't given the step sequencer much thought ever but thank You I'll look into it now. Can you select multiple notes and change them though? That was more of the point of this video..hats was just an example to spark some other uses for others.
@Attilio I didn't see a preset for it to alternate velocities but somehow was able to turn them down simultaneously, not sure how it worked but it did.
This is very valuable and helpful to me. Thanks for sharing. I do have one question, however. Have you found a way to select all the notes in a track with just one tap instead of dragging your finger across the screen and enter a fixed numerical velocity value for all selected notes? I've been trying to figure out an easy way to do this for the longest. This is very easy to do on the old MPCs like the 4000 and the 2500 with just a few button presses because there is a dedicated "Window" button and when you highlight the cursor on the track velocity in the "Main" screen, a window will come up allowing you to enter a fixed velocity value for all of the notes pertaining to the current selected track. Unfortunately, there is no such feature on these newer current-generation MPCs. The only alternatives are the grid edit screen and the list edit screen. However, the way of selecting notes in grid edit is rather clunky and unintuitive, as you have just revealed in this video. I prefer the list edit screen. However, the MPC still won't allow me to enter a fixed velocity value for "ALL SELECTED NOTES" !!! This means I have no way of setting a fixed value for all selected prerecorded notes in a track that have various velocity values. I may not want to have "FULL LEVEL" on all the time while actually recording notes. However, I would like to have the ability to set all the prerecorded midi notes in a track to a fixed velocity value I specify with just one operation. I really hope Akai makes this possible in a future update. I'm going to connect a USB computer keyboard to my MPC One and see if I discover something using the shift and control keys while selecting and trying different functions on the MPC.
Oh, no! I don't have room on my desk for another keyboard, haha. This is a bad-ass find, though. I wonder what other fun can be found using a keyboard, or better - a keyboard+pad combo! Thanks for sharing this!
@@maracuder This is an excellent idea, except these sorts of things require the OS driver to program them (change what key they will send). And, the MPC isn't Windows, so...
And why is there no way to only display the selected notes when opening the velocity window, that would have been a lot more logical, annoys me a lot every time I need to do adjustments on several notes simultaneously on a busy track.
good question..id say this is more of an example of being able to select multiple notes rather than it being about the hihats..use that how you will if you find it useful.. maybe you play some chords and you want to shift some notes around and transpose them simultaneously to create an inversion...just a thought for you to take where you will.
Yeah, you right. I just listened to it in a noisy environment and I thought you were saying that it is possible even with the shift on the MPC. Ok, makes sense:) thanks for your passion about MPC. 👊🏼
I see what you mean now. Maybe there is a use for the shift select in grid view for something other than hihats that can't be done in the step sequencer..?
I got a question fam, you know when creating a new drum program on the legacy MPC (5000) there's a screen where you can layer up to 4 sample / level, tune, range. My question is what is range, and can you explain it to me. Searched the manual and it only explain level and tune.
If you change the range, the layers will respond to velocity, how hard you hit a pad will determine which sample/layer is triggered. If you leave the range alone then all layers will trigger simultaneously.
You could also use two pads for your hi hats and to the left of the grid where the column that shows each rows pad designation you can tap the pad number you want to highlight the notes for and it will select the whole row. Also if you want to delete everything you have highlighted you can hold shift and at the bottom of the screen the menu changes and the options become TC, CUT, COPY, PASTE, MUTE and SOLO Timing correction, cut works like it does on a computer it deletes what you have highlighted, but saves it to a clipboard so you can paste it somewhere else, this version of copy doesn't duplicate what you have highlighted it works like a computer's copy function, paste works by using the play head as your cursor and if you tap the blue timeline across the top of the grid the play head the play head will land there where you tapped, and then you can paste whatever you either copied or have on the clipboard from your last cut action. To move the play head to the beginning of the timeline hold shift and hit stop.

Cool trick with the keyboard. I would probably just run two separate tracks for the hats. Then you can run the velocity on the track however you like.

No it doesn't work with the shift button on the mpc that's the point I was making. Only the shift on the qwerty makes it possible

If you change the range, the layers will respond to velocity, how hard you hit a pad will determine which sample/layer is triggered. If you leave the range alone then all layers will trigger simultaneously.
@@LiftedNoise Thanks fam ..
It’s strange that the shift button on a keyboard works but the shift button provided doesn’t
Cool
This is the very long way to do this IMO. Just use the 4th graf down and drag up and down in automation bar by bar 100x faster.
Honestly not sure what your explaining but I'd like to know..🤔
Yes please explain
- Use the automation bars (step sequencer)
- change layout to 8-16 or whatever
- Turn volume down for the hats you want
You could also use two pads for your hi hats and to the left of the grid where the column that shows each rows pad designation you can tap the pad number you want to highlight the notes for and it will select the whole row.
Also if you want to delete everything you have highlighted you can hold shift and at the bottom of the screen the menu changes and the options become
TC, CUT, COPY, PASTE, MUTE and SOLO
Timing correction, cut works like it does on a computer it deletes what you have highlighted, but saves it to a clipboard so you can paste it somewhere else, this version of copy doesn't duplicate what you have highlighted it works like a computer's copy function, paste works by using the play head as your cursor and if you tap the blue timeline across the top of the grid the play head the play head will land there where you tapped, and then you can paste whatever you either copied or have on the clipboard from your last cut action.
To move the play head to the beginning of the timeline hold shift and hit stop.

Definitely. I've seen that work before, probably more precise selecting notes that with your finger.
