I was lucky enough to see Scott before he was a known guitar player. Saw him in Palmdale,ca. With a top 40 band. He would play a solo with his echoplex using the whole 3 min to record his solo then hit play and walk off stage to get a drink while his echoplex was playing with his band. Also he played top40 solos like no one else. As I am a sax player I got to jam with him at his home and some gigs , I will always remember how he sounded playing over some jazz standards. A genius on the guita
Imagine walking into a tiny club with a few friends and all of a sudden you hear THIS coming from a small stage, jammed into the far end of a narrow room. THAT was exactly how and when I first heard Tribal Tech in the early 90's.
@@petechilds788 It was a club in Albany, NY. I never missed them coming through town after that and would end up hanging out with both Scotts and Gary regularly before shows. They're a lot of fun :)
I remember this concert in Amsterdam. Unforgettable. Kirk during his solo which was so intense just kept going and going while almost falling of his stool. Didn’t miss a beat! Super band. I can’t imagine a better fusion team ever again.
yeah, i was at the infamous "blizzard show" at toad's place. Defied certain death driving sideways to get there. maybe 14 fusion nerds comprising the total crowd, all jammed toward the front of the stage like a science class. This was pre-"illicit" and Sco set up the tune announcing his girlfriend was seen with kenny g, so it was time for him to 'sell out'. They played the whole phony smooth jazz intro until finally turning up to 11, screaming 'Psyche!' and launching into this thunderous epic.
Absolutely. I started meeting the guys regularly every following year afterward. It was really just a matter of showing up a little early for a few beers and while they were never swarmed by fans, they were always willing and quite fun to talk with. On top of all of this talent, they're just awesome people. Maybe there's hope for us after all...
One of the greatest; period. There are too many incredible bands (Like Holdsworth, Mahavishnu, etc) for your "greatest ever" to mean anything. But this band definitely belongs in that esteemed company.
Kirk's a madman. Not underrated at all. Those who know, just fucking know he's the shit. I miss the smooth/jazz cheesy intro from the studio album. To be in a band where everyone is banging hard must be pure bliss.
This is awesome. Scott learned a lot from playing in the Elektric Band and you can see it here. The album drum solo was so cool I had to look it up live.
That's exactly what happened to me a few years ago, I had just met Scott the night before after a rehearsal in MD one night, they were playing in DC the next night . these guys blew me completely away!
Kirk is the unsung hero of TT! Probably my favorite drummer of all times! Love the energy! He could replace 'animal' from the Muppet Show( I believe Americans call it Sesame Streat)
I've got a bootleg of Tribal Tech with Virgil Donati on drums. He's an amazing drummer and really fit the band aswell. it was like a whole other animal
Kirk Covington is by far one of the most underrated players of all time . This drum solo is so off the cuff yet so pin point accurate it's almost like the drums fuel his energy and talent the harder he plays the more intense and dirty he gets . Just an insane performance all together by every player .
Like UZEB, there are a couple of things that set Tribal Tech above and apart: 1) they are a BAND, and 2) great, seriously great, writing. And of course, the brilliant playing.
Well I've seen all the "greats" and as much as Holdsworth and Henderson take it to town live, some of the best for all out blowing I've seen have been Frank Gambale's band and believe it or not, Robben Ford with the Yellowjackets backing him with Virgil Donati on drums back in the day! Absolutely stunning and likely never to be repeated.
This is the holy land, and TT feel it and perform as such, probably based out of a 4.5-star complex, lol, 'though they may just have stepped off the 'plane from Saturn, as far as the stunned audience is concerned [except any aspiring strat-students that may have been there and thinking of getting into the NY-jazz scene (any ideas?)]. Owing to this first tune's intensity local holymen are praying, sticks are breaking, drinks are being spilled, and people are feinting in the crowd, mainly over Scott's tapped arpeggios and Gary's mid-range response. Both get the intensity going in their solos and the band support majestically thru' long-suffering familiarity. When Scott gets to the final insanely syncopated line and spits it out like a tripod-mounted RPK on full-auto connected up to a base-guard quad-fifty it's like Allan nailing the ending lick of Fred. Another over-achieving performance from TT.
@jaretthale78 I saw them at the Carefree Theater in West Palm Beach a bunch of years ago. I was with a friend who was one of Scott's classmates at FAU. I know how genius this is. I am an accomplished player myself... It is just that if you put me in with this band I would have no idea what to do. I just don't hear where the music is going from chord to chord. I guess I am just a rocker.
@Neidhardt84 Well, it didn't have so much to do with Scott or Frank's playing, more the way the music was arranged. Of course, Tribal Tech did have Steve Smith and Scott Henderson in it, maybe I could be thinking of that.
@Neidhardt84 Okay, Vital Information, which Frank played for. Either that, or his 'Passages' CD back in 1993. I realize his mellower stuff isn't like this.
I miss the times when this music gathered such big crowds.

Awesome, was it the Baked Potato by any chance?

metal attitude with bebop technique played at the edge of what a band can do...25 years later this is still in the top...incredible
Best drums solo I have ever heard. This guy redefined drum soloing for me.
Exactamente. Además tiene un estilo en los solos, que es único y son difíciles de igualar. Para mi el mejor de la historia junto a Morgan Agren.
the greatest fusion band ever. Period
That bass is so amazing, it just lays perfect ground for amazing guitar playing! Combined with the drums it's just insane.
Yes! And the tone is so beautiful. It’s simultaneously sweet, assertive, growling, and it has such a singing quality to it.
Meeting Gary was one of the greatest moments for me//
Super humble and nice...
What a group
Forever fan of the Tribe
best drum solo ive seen in awhile
Tal cual inigualable.
I saw Kirk twice in Austin TX a couple years ago and he gave me a drumstick , hes A M A Z I N G

I can't believe how long I've trundled along unaware of how fantastic these guys are...
I hope you still like them, Mike
What a band!!!
I've been lucky enough to see them live in Italy 12 years ago...
Me too, in Lissone. That experience was wonderful! This guys give u something like a dispnea with their sound!
all these dudes - top.....of the top - they should be considered olympic heroic champions of the history of human music -phenomenal in every way
Amazingly insane musicianship, these guys. Damn.
You aren't wrong there. Too good for mainstream.
That is off the charts especially the drum solo
One of the greatest; period. There are too many incredible bands (Like Holdsworth, Mahavishnu, etc) for your "greatest ever" to mean anything. But this band definitely belongs in that esteemed company.
I guess Tribal Tech have kind of the Led Zeppelin supergroup status of the jazz/rock fusion genre. You just HAVE TO love this band.
Some of the greatest players ever assembled
Kirk's a madman. Not underrated at all. Those who know, just fucking know he's the shit. I miss the smooth/jazz cheesy intro from the studio album. To be in a band where everyone is banging hard must be pure bliss.
I love this shit…I did this in the 70’s..a great time for this music!!!
Garys bass solo is awesome.
By far one of the best fusion bass solos imho
This is awesome. Scott learned a lot from playing in the Elektric Band and you can see it here. The album drum solo was so cool I had to look it up live.
I'm so glad these played Band on the Wall in Manchester last Wednesday
IN CRE DI BLE...all the musicians, and his musiic...!!! I love that

What a great track played by such brilliant musicians…!
Best drum solo I’ve ever heard!!
Kirk is the unsung hero of TT! Probably my favorite drummer of all times! Love the energy! He could replace 'animal' from the Muppet Show( I believe Americans call it Sesame Streat)
This guitar solo intro is still haunting me.
what a band...! Kirk...! What a 'tune'!
Kirk also plays a sweet flute, sensitive piano and a wickedly mean tennis racquet. Miss ya man!, john gordon
My favorite jazz rock band! They rule!!
Definitely my favorite incarnation of this band, monsters all...
What a great piece of music…!It’s just great to hear great musicians playing together…Lucky for us,it was recorded.
Gary Willis’ tone is so freaking good
Best drums/bass combo ever... Unbelievable
I've got a bootleg of Tribal Tech with Virgil Donati on drums. He's an amazing drummer and really fit the band aswell. it was like a whole other animal
Please share
I think Tony Williams would dig it.
i would have loved to see these guys!! awesome
ABSLOLUTLY FANTASTIC !!!!!
man what an aggressive, rugged drummer
that's Captain Kirk!
What a solo of scott !!!!!!!
I love how at 2:02 Kirk (the drummer) listen to Scott's very intense solo and start banging his head like "Damn this is so fucking good" !
i detect much awesomeness in this sector. ;) outstanding performance by everyone.

Life can be tough when comparing oneself to the likes of Scott!
Who knew that Larry the Cable Guy was such a great drummer! Seriously, great video Thanks!
AWESOME GUITAR SOLO......................
just gotta love Kirk's "angry drumming" ... this is JAZZ!!! :-DDD
I've always wondered what it would be like if Holdsworth played with passion...and was surrounded with musicians of his own caliber. Now I know!
Humanity is better overall for having had Tribal Tech in its existence. Fact.
Like UZEB, there are a couple of things that set Tribal Tech above and apart: 1) they are a BAND, and 2) great, seriously great, writing. And of course, the brilliant playing.
MORTALMENTE
INCREIBLE !!!!!!
I feel like I missed so much not going to this concert>
i cannot stop watching this.
Woow! I would've been mindblown if I'd first known these titans that way!
Kirk Covington what a powerhouse drummer and also plays offensive tackle for the Chicago Bears.
Well I've seen all the "greats" and as much as Holdsworth and Henderson take it to town live, some of the best for all out blowing I've seen have been Frank Gambale's band and believe it or not, Robben Ford with the Yellowjackets backing him with Virgil Donati on drums back in the day! amazing!!!
this is a really good band
Only one of the best, but the best fusion rock group.
Many dont know this, but when Kirk wasnt touring or recording with Tribal tech and Henderson, he moonlighted playing piano on a Cruise Ship.
Me too, a coulpe time in LA, and many times in Boston.
Unbelievable bass solo!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic Music
all these guys are virtuoso players...so good
Damn this is sooooo freakin' GOOD!!!
fantastic!
What a great experience that must have been!

Gary Willis man, doesn’t get much better...
FUCKIN A dude. i could not imagine how blown the heck away you must have been!!!!
one of the best bands ever. a shame they split.
I love Tribal Tech, big time. But the best fusion band ever is Weather Report!
:-p

Unknown to 99% of people out there, only because they refuse to play crap.
