This is the earlier version of the MB's, with Denny Laine leading the band. Pre-Justin Hayward. Denny later played with Paul McCartney as a member of Wings. I saw Denny live in 2017, and it is one of my all-time favorite shows. RIP Denny!
The band almost didn't survive their massive mismanagement. Mike Pinder, on piano, is one of the reasons I wanted to learn to play keyboards! Mike, Graham, and Ray are the only ones who survived the financial disaster to bring in Justin Hayward and John Lodge.
The single was released In December 1964 the lead singer was Denny Laine who passed away in 2024 the last surviving member of the early line up of the group
@ Kathie says…everyone needs to stay out of their business, really. I love both Jay and Amber, but only THEY can work out their problems without their fans taking polls and getting involved. It is a hurtful time in their lives especially since there are children involved. The best thing that we, (the people who care about them) can do is pray for them…for healing and forgiveness. Stirring up their situation doesn’t help anybody at all.
I forgot about this song!!! I Loved hearing this song on the radio...in 65' I have heard it in years....wow...thank you for reacting to it....Jay you are the best!!! I wish you would react to "The Voice" by The Moody Blues.....It is a BANGER!!!!
This is a great introduction to some early Moody Blues, featuring Denny Laine on lead vocals. This is pre-Justin. This is also the studio recording that you're hearing.
Gives me goosebumps. This is the VERY best song of the Moody Blues before Justin Hayward came on board and then there were MANY. Saw them in St. Louis in 1970, 1971, and '72. The best!!!
This is a studio version. In the early days of what was called a promo (before video) they mostly lip-sync to the song. If you want to hear a live version, there is on from when Denny Laine played with WINGS, on the "WINGS OVER AMERICA" album. It's worth a listen.
This was their 1964 hit, Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined the band in 1967. The lead singer is Denny Laine RIP who became lead guitarist with Wings for Paul McCartney’s band.
"Legend of a Mind" a track off the 'In Search of the Lost Chord' album released back in 1968 by the 'Moody Blues' is enveloped in psychedelia and a musical sensation. The use of the mellotron adds flavor to the arrangement. Flautist Ray Thomas is exceptional as well. The song is referring to the hallucinogen LSD icon Timothy Leary who was an advocate for the use of the drug during the 1960's. At any rate, "Legend of a Mind" is mesmerizing. 💫🎤🎸🎹🥁🔊⚡🔥☮🎧
The Moody Blues are in a category all their own! How can I say what my favorite song is? It changes! For now I'd say "The Story In Your Eyes." Jay, I'm so happy you discovered them.✌️🎶
I found your channel in 2020 and have been sharing all of this wonderful music with you since then. It's been a great pleasure and as long as you keep putting them out, I will be here watching. Thank you Jordan. For another Moodies suggestion try "Story In Your Eyes", "Never Comes The Day", "New Horizons", "The Actor", or "Ride My See-Saw" - There are many from their first seven albums.
The other indicator that this was one of their earliest videos are the suits, ties and shorter hair, just like the early Beatles, before they grew out their hair and started dressing like colorful hippies.
"Go Now" is a song composed by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett and first recorded by Bessie Banks, released as a single in January 1964. The best-known version was recorded by the Moody Blues and released the same year. Maybe you can do a Female Friday.
MOODY BLUES - ** I'm A Singer In A Rock and Roll Band ** and ** Ride My Sea Saw ** / ** Evening: The Sunset /Twilight Time ** 1960's / 1970's Rock n Roll Classics
Reflections of 7th grade. My favorite song then, one of my favorites still. You’ve barely cracked the surface of this incredible band that I’ve seen somewhere between 15 and 20 times.
The Moody Blues were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1964. The band initially consisted of Graeme Edge (drums), Denny Laine (guitar/vocals), Mike Pinder (keyboards/vocals), Ray Thomas (multi-instrumentalist/vocals), and Clint Warwick (bass/vocals). Originally part of the British beat and R&B scene of the early-mid 1960s, the band came to prominence with the UK No. 1 and US Top 10 single "Go Now" in late 1964/early 1965. Laine and Warwick both left the band in 1966, with Edge, Pinder and Thomas recruiting new members Justin Hayward (guitar/vocals) and John Lodge (bass/vocals).
Hey Jay Happy New Year to you, Amber & your entire family. Thx for the review. All the Very BEST in 2025 and for many decades to come. Cheers from Vancouver, Canada
That was the studio version. Denny Laine, who does the lead vocal here, did a great live version of this when he was with Wings. It's in the Wings' concert movie Rock Show. Check that version out. BTW, Lose Your Money and Bye-Bye- Bird are another couple of good tunes from the early Moodies line-up you might like.☮
I found your channel when you had +-76k subs, and subscribed a month afterwards. Stay strong, a lot of us have had turmoil in our lives and we understand. Will always support your channel. Thanks for the Moody Blues, glad you enjoyed it.
Day 15 of requesting Labi Siffre - "I Got The ... ".His music was heavily influenced by soul, jazz, and blues, creating a unique blend of genres. You won't be disappointed!
I've always loved this song. Denny Laine (RIP) sings lead on this song. He formed Wings with Paul McCartney and the rest is history. This is a cover version of a US record. This isn't live. Many groups lip synced their songs for TV shows.
One of the very first 45’s I ever bought way back in early 1965. Denny Laine who sang lead on Go Now worked with Paul McCartney and Wings during the 1970’s. By the way this was. Mimed performance. Just a great song!
This was the Moody Blues 1st hit as the Moody Blues. It was a cover of soul singer Bessie Banks' first released in early 1964. The Moody Blues version was released later in 1964. This lineup of the Moody Blues is sometimes referred to as the Moody Blues mark I, and featured Denny Laine on the bulk of the vocals. After two early hits, Go Now and Bottom of My Heart, they stagnated. The Bassist, Clint Warwick left the band, and was replaced by Rod Clark , in 1866. Later that same year, Clark and Singer/Guitarist Denny Laine, also left the band, leaving Keyboardist, Mike Pinder, Drummer, Graham Edge, and woodwind/harmonica player, Ray Thomas. John Lodge, who had been bassist with Ray Thomas' earlier band, El Riot & the Rebels, was recruited, and guitarist, Justin Hayward, was also added, Hayward had answered a "Guitarist Wanted" ad placed by Eric Burdon, who was reforming The Animals. Burdon gave the sack of applications to Pinder, who chose to add Hayward. This constituted the "classic" Moody Blues lineup: Pinder, Thomas, Edge, Lodge, Hayward. The next seven albums are referred to, by music historians, as the "core 7" albums. Edge had stated that he thought of the Laine led lineup as more like his pre-Moody Blues, band Gerry Levine & the Avengers, and the actual Moody Blues didn't take shape until the arrival of Lodge and Hayward.
*Like a lot of 60s bands, The Moody Blues had an entire change in style around '83-'88ish & HIT THE CHARTS BIG WITH **_"IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS"_** & **_"I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE"_** that were in the Phil Collins/Genesis, Mike & the Mechanics, Chicago style and didn't stick with just playing the 60s-70s "acid trippy" music of the early stuff*
A cool live version of this can be found on the album "Wings Over America" where former Moody Blues member Denny Laine, now with Paul McCartney and Wings, gets behind the piano and sings this old classic with his new band. Denny would be the only member aside from Linda McCartney who would be with Paul and Wings from beginning to end. You can also see it on the movie "Rockshow" which is the concert film from Wings' 1976 tour.
Before joining up with the Moodys, Denny Laine was in a band called Denny Laine and the Diplomats, which featured Bev Bevan (later of The Move and ELO) on drums. Bev recalls feeling distinctly envious of Denny and the boys after seeing them on Top of the Pops (main UK pop TV show), while all Bev had to look forward to was heading back to the day job. PS: where's Amber?
This is very early, Old Time Moody Blues, prior to Justin Haywood - I'm sure you've heard by now. LEGEND OF A MIND from their album 'In Search of The Lost Chord', written by their flautist Ray Thomas, as well as RIDE MY SEE SAW from the same album are Necessary for your Moody Blues enjoyment. Carry On, Jay!
The video is live footage but the audio seems to be the studio version, though there may be better mixes (all mono). After Denny left, as well as the bass player, they recruited both Justin Hayward and John Lodge and together shifted into a whole new, psychedelic sound which was where they found amazing success. Denny went on the play with Paul McCartney and Wings.
I got to see The Moody Blues in the early to mid 80s in New Haven Connecticut They had a new up-and-comer open for them, maybe you've heard of him, Stevie Ray Vaughan. ✌🏻
Great keyboards by original Moody Mike Pinder. He was THE keyboard man through the 60s and 70s. Great songwriter and singer as well. Jay--BTW is anybody checking e-mails anymore? I realize you all are very busy.
The original Moody Blues lasted a couple of years. Singer/guitarist Denny Laine and Bassist Clint Warwick left, and replaced by Justin Hayward and John Lodge. This early version of the Moodies would have lasted longer had they not been swindled by their managers and left broke. Musically it all worked out for the better.
Almost a different group from what you've heard before with Denny Laine doing the vocals and playing lead guitar, and Clint Warwick playing bass. Both of them left the band in 1966 and Graham Edge, Ray Tomas, and Mike Pinder recruited Justin Hayward and John Lodge to replace them, changing the sound dramatically. For their early prog rock sound, try The Story In Your Eyes, Isn't Life Strange, and I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band. For their more pop later songs, try The Voice and Gemini Dream.
This is the first Moody Blues "incarnation". For me, are 2 different bands, the name is the same, but the band don't sounds as the same in any aspect, maybe except the backing vocals only. This is a studio version. Moody Blues had a "raw" sound, extremely different of the "second incarnation". About this first era, my favorite is a faster song named "I’ll Go Crazy".
......................Still have this, their first album and first hit song they had................... This was very early for this type of rock n roll . This was a huge song in the very first wave of the British Invasion. i'm thinking 1964
love your channel. great to hear all our music, being 73. ever hear of a band called mitch ryder and the detroit wheels? try a song called " devil in a blue dress"
Someone else has mentioned it, but I would also like to point out that this song is a *cover* . The original was recorded by soul singer Bessie Banks, and was a minor regional hit in early 1964. The Moody Blues picked up on it and released their own version later that same year, which was more successful and helped launch their career. I think it's always important to recognize the pioneering artists, often from the world of soul/early R&B and blues.
As others have mentioned, Denny Laine on lead vocals here. It would be their only #1 on the UK Singles Charts in 1964. I absolutely love this song and everything that followed with Justin Hayward taking lead. Denny Laine co founded Wings with Paul McCartney and co-wrote, "Mull Of Kintyre " which you have reacted to. Another beautiful song Denny wrote solo is a song called ❤ " SAY YOU DON'T MIND " ❤ which was a solo hit by Colin Blunstone from The Zombies and later The Alan Parsons Project. All the best Jordan, keep up the good work. Thank you 👍
This 1965 first early cover hit for the Moodies is interesting history but has no relationship to the later more sophisticated and groundbreaking music that they are famous for, the combination of classical and pop/rock, the Days of Future Passed album and the albums that immediately followed it. "Breathe deep, the gathering gloom..."
Jay- This is the very early Moody Blues. Lead singing done by Denny Laine, who left after that 1st album, replaced by Hayward. They really were a bit bluesy here. Laine later was an integral part of Wings with Paul McCartney. He is missed. RIP, Denny. By the way, Jay, this is 1965, and they are merely lip-synching here. What you're hearing is the record. A classic.
This is the earlier version of the MB's, with Denny Laine leading the band. Pre-Justin Hayward. Denny later played with Paul McCartney as a member of Wings. I saw Denny live in 2017, and it is one of my all-time favorite shows. RIP Denny!
The lead vocal here is by Denny Lane who later joined Wings with Paul McCartney.By the way. This is the studio version.
Died last year. RIP Denny.
Denny sang this on Wings Over America tour album.
Cool
The band almost didn't survive their massive mismanagement. Mike Pinder, on piano, is one of the reasons I wanted to learn to play keyboards! Mike, Graham, and Ray are the only ones who survived the financial disaster to bring in Justin Hayward and John Lodge.
Denny Laine
Thanks to whomever recommended this, it's not normally reacted to! Love the soul in this one!!
This is Denny Laine on lead. Justin Hayward joined the band in 1966. Great song! Great band!
Man, I haven't heard this one in DECADES . Thanks for ur reactions Jay . You're the best.
The single was released In December 1964 the lead singer was Denny Laine who passed away in 2024 the last surviving member of the early line up of the group
Actually, Mike Pinder died April 24, 2024. Dennys died December 5, 2023,
Kathie says…THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PLAYING THIS SONG!!! It’s one of my all time favorites!!!🥰🫵
Who else misses Amber ?
@ Kathie says…everyone needs to stay out of their business, really. I love both Jay and Amber, but only THEY can work out their problems without their fans taking polls and getting involved.
My favorite Moody Blues song is THE VOICE. Beautiful with driving energy. I hope will hear a reaction.
Gives me goosebumps. This is the VERY best song of the Moody Blues before Justin Hayward came on board and then there were MANY. Saw them in St. Louis in 1970, 1971, and '72. The best!!!
I saw them live in Sydney in 2005
I was there with you in St Louis in 71 and 72!
Denny Laine sing Go Now, with Paul McCartney on the Live Tour Wings over America 1976.
Beat me to it.
This is my favorite Moody blues song… I was in high school😊
This is their best record, and the distortion on the 45 makes it even better.
This is a studio version. In the early days of what was called a promo (before video) they mostly lip-sync to the song. If you want to hear a live version, there is on from when Denny Laine played with WINGS, on the "WINGS OVER AMERICA" album. It's worth a listen.
I remember this song from waaaay back. The piano, the vocals, the emotion, the times.
One of my all time favorites. Thank you!
This was their first hit and before Justin Heyward joined them.
This was their 1964 hit, Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined the band in 1967. The lead singer is Denny Laine RIP who became lead guitarist with Wings for Paul McCartney’s band.
This was their first hit (1964).
1964. I was nine and loved this song. We always had the radio on.
Ok, this is my first time hearing this song. Thanks for the introduction. Loved it. Jay, you're doing fantastic with the music choices.
Oh my! I haven’t heard this in such a long time. What a great song! I love the Moody Blues!
Thanks for finding this. 💜

I have VHS 📼 tape Legend of a Band
I miss amber ! She has so much more musical depth than monkey mouth above.
This is their best song - I have loved this since it was first released. Thank you for playing this ❤
Wow, I wasn't aware the Moody Blues sang this song.
Ya me neither
Ditto!!!!
The Moody Blues are in a category all their own! How can I say what my favorite song is? It changes! For now I'd say "The Story In Your Eyes." Jay, I'm so happy you discovered them.✌️🎶

1965 was a great year for music, thank you for bring back so many good memories
Ah the Bluesy Moody Blues. Great tune. The Soul in his voice gives you a feel of Bessie Banks' original.
My all time favourite piano solo! 😍
In the early 80s they have a few hits " I Know Your Out There Somewhere " A great band to see in concert 😀
And they already reacted to that song 8 months ago
The other indicator that this was one of their earliest videos are the suits, ties and shorter hair, just like the early Beatles, before they grew out their hair and started dressing like colorful hippies.
Love it. One of the first piano pieces I ever learnt, way back in the 60s
"Go Now" is a song composed by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett and first recorded by Bessie Banks, released as a single in January 1964. The best-known version was recorded by the Moody Blues and released the same year. Maybe you can do a Female Friday.
Bessie Banks' original is fantastic! Although I love the Moodies' version, too, Bessie pours her heart out in her recording.
Always loved this track! It aways sounded ahead of its time ❤
I have heard this in ages. Great memories.
The Voice needs to be next on your list of Moody Blues songs to check.

The vocals and harmonies dominate this song backed up by the instruments to create a real banger
Early Moodies is right. This was their first hit, I believe from 1964. You still get the incredible musicianship even at this early stage.
1964 Van Morrison suggestion - "Gloria" by Them.
WE ARE ON YOUR SIDE JAY! ❤ 1000%
Hey Jay
Happy New Year to you, Amber & your entire family.
Thx for the review.
All the Very BEST in 2025 and for many decades to come.
Cheers from Vancouver, Canada
"Nights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon" are my favorites from this group.
I was a fan starting with this song! I was 12...🙂
Never knew this was the Moody Blues
That was the studio version. Denny Laine, who does the lead vocal here, did a great live version of this when he was with Wings. It's in the Wings' concert movie Rock Show. Check that version out. Love this song! Vocals & harmonies are really cool.
I found your channel when you had +-76k subs, and subscribed a month afterwards. Stay strong, a lot of us have had turmoil in our lives and we understand. Will always support your channel. Thanks for the Moody Blues, glad you enjoyed it.
I always liked this jam!
Hey, Jordan. This song was winningly described by contemporaries as a "rock and roll waltz"! Pretty accurate. 🎶
Day 15 of requesting Labi Siffre - "I Got The ... ".His music was heavily influenced by soul, jazz, and blues, creating a unique blend of genres. You won't be disappointed!
" just a singer in a rock and roll band " by The Moodys
Love this song. Reminds me of being in elementary school.
I've always loved this song. Denny Laine (RIP) sings lead on this song. He formed Wings with Paul McCartney and the rest is history. This is a cover version of a US record. This isn't live. Many groups lip synced their songs for TV shows.
The best of 60's-70's-80's...The Moody Blues was and is at the top. RIP Denny Laine...
One of the very first 45’s I ever bought way back in early 1965. Denny Laine who sang lead on Go Now worked with Paul McCartney and Wings during the 1970’s. By the way this was. Mimed performance. Just a great song!
One of the great tracks from the Moody Blues. BTW, this is the studio version, but it's laid down pretty raw.
This was the Moody Blues 1st hit as the Moody Blues. It was a cover of soul singer Bessie Banks' first released in early 1964. The Moody Blues version was released later in 1964. My favorite song by them. Thanks for this
You have such great songs and reactions, thanks!

"The Voice" is actually my favorite song of that era of MB music.
And Jay has reacted to both of those
Yes this is the studio version
You need to to do Foreigners Until The End Of Time
I've always felt this was their first Hit... conventional compared to their later albums! Love it after not hearing in quite a while! :)
A cool live version of this can be found on the album "Wings Over America" where former Moody Blues member Denny Laine, now with Paul McCartney and Wings, gets behind the piano and sings this old classic with his new band. I got to see The Moody Blues in the early to mid 80s in New Haven Connecticut
They had a new up-and-comer open for them, maybe you've heard of him, Stevie Ray Vaughan. ✌🏻
Gemini Dream, The Voice and I Know You’re Out There Somewhere are other great songs.
He's already done that last one
Great keyboards by original Moody Mike Pinder. He was THE keyboard man through the 60s and 70s. Great songwriter and singer as well. Jay--BTW is anybody checking e-mails anymore? I realize you all are very busy.
Denny Lane used to sing this classic as part of the Wings live set, with Paul and Linda McCartney on backing vocals!
Love this song! I had no idea it was by the Moody Blues. An earlier sound .
Thus released in 1965. Justin Hayward and the base player joined in 1966.
Pre- John Lodge & Justin Hayward. Denny Laine, Mike Pinder, Graham Edge & Ray Thomas. Laine left before the Lodge & Hayword joined.
You mentioned 3 of my favorites and now I get a fourth!! Thanks!
What a song.
Justin Hayward wasn't in the Moody Blues when this song was recorded. Denny Laine was on vocals.

The era where songs got their tunes only by instruments
Story in Your Eyes Jay, an excellent rocker by Justin and the Moody's.
I grew up with this music we were blessed
......................Still have this, their first album and first hit song they had................... This was very early for this type of rock n roll . This was a huge song in the very first wave of the British Invasion. i'm thinking 1964
love your channel. great to hear all our music, being 73. ever hear of a band called mitch ryder and the detroit wheels? try a song called " devil in a blue dress"
Such a great song!!!
A great tune. The British Invasion sound but the piano solo gives a hint of Moods to follow. ☮💛🎶
Someone else has mentioned it, but I would also like to point out that this song is a *cover* . The original was recorded by soul singer Bessie Banks, and was a minor regional hit in early 1964. I`ve always loved this. The original by Bessie Banks is killer.
That's Denny Laine as lead vocalist.
Originally sang by Bessie Banks but Mike Pinder introduced that amazing piano break and made this song 100 times better.
Do the “video” of The Moody Blues doing :
“ I’M JUST A SINGER IN A ROCK AND ROLL BAND “
great drumming!!
One of the great bands from my home town... Birmingham, UK. 🙂
Jay- This is the very early Moody Blues. Lead singing done by Denny Laine, who left after that 1st album, replaced by Hayward. They really were a bit bluesy here.
