As Dhaos' rampage threatens the very existence of the world, Origin reveals to the party the true nature of the Eternal Sword and its use in dragging Dhaos from his hidden pocket in time. Upon revealing his castle, the party enters and braves the Demon King's stronghold for the final confrontation as their efforts are defended on the outside. The eternal battle of truths and convictions commences.

You know peeps complain about this movie but i say it like this be glad this got an anime because alot of good game REALLY DONT GET CRAP. So is it that hard to appreciate that we got something outta it.

@@DynomitePunch Needs more context, Using your analogy. America is out of trees and the whole country is going to die really soon. And Canada has a LOT of them, but they are burning then because they don't know what a tree is.
It's meant to be a bit grey in the end. To the people of Aselia, Dhaos is villain of the highest order, but to his people, he's their conquering hero. Who fills what role can change with different perspectives. In the end, it's two sides fighting it out for their own reasons.
OVAs are meant to be short and sweet. I'm sure you know that this OVA was based off of the video game, Tales of Phantasia, the very first game in the Tales series. The game establishes a lot more, and expands on the significance of Dhaos's hatred of humans, his acceptance that he's not so different, Cless, Mint and Chester's ancestry, and Suzu being forced to kill her parents. There's a lot more too.

I know this is more ToS animation related, but when Suzu introduced herself as "Fujibayashi, Suzu." that brought back memories! In the ToS anime thats how Sheena first introduces herself. "Fujibayashi, Sheena." I really like the ToS anime, it has a special place in my heart. I did notice that Sheena and Suzu have similar pink ribbons in their hair! Its really cool the connections between those two, even if their couple thousand year relatives!
I don't think this animation is as good as Abyss' (maybe if it had more episodes), but I like it much more than Symphonia's. Plus, it's great to see the party in shiny animated beauty, instead of little sprites. And hear voices! XD
Personally I think Symphonia's was the best. Phantasia was one of their earliest so they tried and I give credit for. They improved it on Symphonia which despite having shortened and changed a lot had much better presented story and characters close to a full fledged anime. Shame it didnt get an english dub.

I do like that Dhaos' soul sort of became a great seed thanks to Martel. He succeeded but at the cost of his life. And Cless and everyone will ensure that Yggdrasil will continue to flourish. ❤❤
The voice actor for Cless Albane is Johnny Yong Bosch, who is indeed, the voice of Kurosaki Ichigo.
Damn, I SO wish there was a whole series of the whole game, like over 50 episodes. I would shit my pants!
....chill out dude. It's an OVA based off a game. If you want every single detail about what happened, go play Tales of Phantasia for the SNES, PSX, or GBA (personally, I recommend the PSX version translated by Phantasian Productions) I could of complained about how they time traveled using a device salvaged from Thor, instead of actually going to Thor to time travel, but I just enjoyed this for what it was. A short and sweet series with VERY minimal changes from the game.
They should of made into a feature length movie instead of a 4 part series.
Since Dhaos was from Dherris Kharlan, I always wondered if he somehow knew Kratos. I mean, since Kratos is an angel, surely he'd still be around then?
Kratos might even be the one who tells Dhaos about the Mana Tree in Aselia.

That would be cool! Though I think it would be cool if we got a game on the four seraphim as well. (Kratos Aurion, Yuan Ka-fei, Mithos Yggdrasil, and Martel Yggdrasil) Or if they remastered this game! Theres so many possibilities for the tales games.
No matter how many times i come back to watch this OVA, I always find myself empathizing with Dhaos instead of the protagonists. They truly are in the wrong. He wants to save his world, while they are in fact dooming theirs by opposing his destruction of magitech. He could've taken that seed from Yggdrasil without harming anything at all, if only they had been willing to listen to him instead of judging him unfairly.

They aren't opposing the destruction of magitech. There's just a better way of going about it than killing the guys who use it.
Dhaos killed a lot of innocent people who weren't using Magitech. That's why he had to die.
@@aninymouse1651 As I mentioned in my other reply to you, Dhaos tried the peaceful approach first. He didn't resort to war until they made it abundantly clear it was the only way he could get through to them.
Incidentally, the ToP complete works makes note Dhaos commanded his army to avoid killing civilians as much as possible.
He didn't *want* bloodshed, but he also didn't want his world to die. The world tree was the only way his planet could survive. Without magic, it physically could not continue to exist.

The game for GBA tells you A LOT more about its concept and VERY detailed that it literally takes you about 4 to a week to beat it nonstop
Gotta love how Dhaos didn't do anything wrong through the entirety of Tales of Phantasia, yet the game pigeon holes you into killing him anyway. His quest may ultimately succeed, but the cost is absurdly high.

@@aninymouse1651 Those people were literally killing their world tree. In any case, Dhaos actually tried to approach them peacefully at first. They refused to stop. He only resorted to violence when bereft of other options. Even then, he told his minions to avoid civilian casualties as much as possible.

@@aninymouse1651 Out of curiosity, are you aware of the reason for the war in the first place? The real reason. Not just what ToP presents in the main story.
Dhaos worked *with* the humans for a while so they wouldn't *need* the mana cannon. Unfortunately, he was betrayed by the cannon's creator and subjected to a propaganda campaign that made him out to be a demon. Even then, he did not begin to wage war against them until after they fired the cannon again.
The "ends" you speak of are every living thing on his home planet. Without the mana tree's seed, a whole world and all of its inhabitants will die. If you think one kingdom getting wrecked after starting the fight in the first place - a kingdom that was actually harming everyone in the world by killing Yggdrasil, I'll add - is somehow not a small price to pay to save an entire planet and billions of people, then I don't know what to tell you.
This is a pretty good animation, that really give the emotions the game gave me.
But that's a shame they just did 4 episodes instead of an entire serie, to fit more with the game... Because of it, they missed some elements (like Morlia mines, Demitel, and of course the 2 forms Dhaos takes after having been defeat once at the end) that was really interesting too.
Besides, because of it some things don't fit... For example, dawn, how did Morrisson use Indignation at the beginning without mana ???

The game takes forever to finish. I've been playing it for years and I have to take breaks in between each time I play. I think i'm going on at least 60 hours.

(cont) a lot more back story, as well as more conflicts between each of the characters and those characters learning from their mistakes, looking at themselves from a different perspective and changing for the better. the anime had the materials to qtell an awe inspiring tale, but, unfortunately, that potential was wasted

THe dialogue is terrible, there are huge time skipping jump cuts, they left out alot of important info... transition from ep 3 to 4 was awful! they are fighting Suzu's father, Origin gets summoned.. then they are at dhaos's castle> NOTHING IT EXPLAINED!!
Shit, the Pendant wasn't even explained until the last ep! THey could have made this the traditional 20-26 episode long anime, got everything out of the way! They skipped finding the 4 great spirits, they skipped going to Odins Tower and Fenrir's temple, they designed Flamberge and the Vorpal sword completely wrong. They arent just a red n blue sword but the embodiment of Odin and Fenrirs souls, the essence of fire and ice themselves... SHIT! They didn't even do the classic Pegasus battle!!! GRRR I hate this anime.
It was poorly done and rushes. Plus why the fuck do they quote Morrison like 6 times? "If there is evil in this world,then truly it lies in the heart of man" Yeah a cool line, main point of the story, but they say it every, friggin, episode. They said it once in the game, not even in the game itself! Just before it started!!
Tales of games are known for their decent to good stories and amazing characters, but mint and cress are wooden boards and arche n' chester are cliche's. Claus is to... Suzu... is was to serious... FUCK this anime.
I haven't had the chance to play Phantasia yet, but I'd realized a lot of stuff seems off.

Not denying that they used that line too much this anime, but that wasn't actually a quote from Morrison. That was Morrison quoting Dhaos.
LionHeartedLEOS Some of the complaints there are perfectly legit, but as to the length? Here we have four episodes. A twenty-six episode season would cost about six times as much to make. You want it, you fund it.

Wolf'ate They are different from each other. I believe it's just that Sheena and Suzu are both in the same clan...Just different time periods and such but it can be possible that she is an ancestor of Suzu...
MrSirHaku I'm playing a patched version of RM2 and it appears as this, Suzu doesnt talk to any Symphonia cast(as far as I'm playing), and I have Kyle, Reala and Harold into the ship that sees Sthan and Rutte going board into, but it seems that Harold explains to Kyle and Reala that those are not from Kyles time and they dont "met" each other yet**giggles**, making Kyle flustrered to not be allowed to call them Mom and Dad I suppose. Dont know much Kanji, but Kyle speak Nande?Dochte? Which means "why not?" And then the gets sad for a reason, maybe because of it. So its a theory that Suzu is ancestor of Sheena(yep, Symphonia is BEFORE according to the original plans due to Ymir Forest, Derris Khan seed, Magitechnology and thing about the worlds separeted).
Wolf'ate If you played Phantasia, then you'll understand. That's why there was the dead tree in the beginning. That was Yggdrasil, the tree that Lloyd named.
MrSirHaku I know this... and ops, I made a mistake here, yep you're right, Sheena came first, but it is kinda strange, since Suzu is from the Past, maybe she is from a very close family for Sheena than I imagine. But anyway, its just a theory, a game theory!
I liked the anime n' all, but I have a few problems with it. This is coming from a person who played Tales of Phantasia. Some of them are, well you can guess for those who aswell played the game, it didn't follow the story at all, maybe a little close, but not that much. Looking at this in a show/movie standpoint, It really lacked in explaining things, and it is really rushed. But hey, the development team have only 30 minutes of footage for each 4 episodes to get this up. Probably why Tales of Phantasia isn't a movie is because the lack of funding. Movies are really expensive to make. They done what they could. Also, animations for an animated movie and go way over 1,000 frames, and it takes hours or heck months to make the animation look fluid. Still I wouldn't say their attempt was terrible, I have seen more half assed animes than this. It was Alright and I enjoyed watching it.

this anime was not great... GOOD but not great... the plot was excelent, however there was no developement, no plot twists or revelations. the characters are very vague. the action scenes were action packed but too short... and the animation was excelent. the voice actors performed greatly too... but it would have been better if there was more to the plot...

Man they butchered the story I mean cmon ishrantu in 4354 wtf he was already dead in the past. Morrison never did indignation his ancestor did, dhaos never helped to heal they tree, and there is so much more they fucked with. And for the mission dhaos was sent on yes it had good intentions to save his home world but he went about it in the worst possible way... This anime Is hurting my head the way it's screwing with the original story. In spite of these glaring mistakes the animation was pretty good and it was nice to see this not on a game screen so much. 2.5/5
That's what the animes usually do, they just take the most important events and sometimes change several things in the plot.
The same happens from Manga to Anime. Sometimes the anime change completely the main Manga story.
Now this happens from the Game. So it's normal.

The animation on this was beautiful.
The plot was stupid.
The man who was bad wasn't really bad no one ever tried to come to middle ground with him even though he tried but everyone just attacked him.
And what's the point of traveling through time just to see Society is stagnant and has not grown nor has there been any innovation. Is this supposed to be some kind of mythological anime Voyage to the Dark Ages.
The reason is how he went about it
He could have tried any other method but he chose to kill instead of come to a compromise
The anime definitely made Dhaos a lot more tilted towards morally grey compared to the game.
