I like this idea, mostly because any timer or automatic watering device is already commercially available. The only benefit to building it yourself is that you could get it for free.

Thanks. I see machines on the curb all the time, and think about recycling them for $, but hadn't thought about making controllers for the pumps, and then using those for hydroponics until now. In fact, the cabinets could be used for reservoirs, and there's already sensors. I don't know exactly what I want to do, but you're helping prime my creativity.
That Aquastop hose was pretty interesting. All the dishwashers in New Zealand I have dealt with have the water solenoid mounted internally and a simple pressure hose connects it to the supply. However recently in the hardware store I saw a product that was described as an Aquastop hose for a washing machine or dishwasher. It was the same principle - the main feed hose inside another one in case the internal one bursts, but it was just a hose with 3/4" threaded couplers on the ends. One thing to remember with these appliance solenoids though is they are not designed for continuous duty, so are only suitable for applications where it's just a brief supply of water to refill a container etc

At home we have pretty much the exact same dishwasher, the colour of the front plastic panel is different, ours has three wire trays but the button layout and everything else is exactly the same. It still runs like a champ!
I know this is an old video but seeing the bowl and pump assembly you constructed in action gave me an idea for you. You could use it with a (plastic safe) solution or solvent and build a very efficient parts washer. Would be great if you could find an old “Texas style” barbecue/smoker, seal it well, add a screen or mesh at the bottom of of the tube where your coals to keep the sludge below where your parts stay, a shelf and filter system for the inlet. You could add a stud wife or something to the exhaust hose so you could position it above the part so it could clean by continuing to run over the item. And close the lid to keep noise and dimension down. Basically a parts washer lol. Sorry for the ramble but you are very inspiring. Thank you sir.

A dishwasher frame could be used for a sandblasting or spray painting cage. It also reminds me of a powder coating oven, but that'd require substantial modifications.

Excellent video, as usual! I've played with NTC thermistors a bit. They are highly non-linear in their response, as you noted. To convert from resistance (or voltage from your voltage divider) to temperature, often look-up tables are used in the microcontroller. These look-up table values can be found experimentally, or derived mathematically from three data points, using the Steinhart-Hart equation.

Those german dishwashers are awesome, I would use those parts to make a aquaponics system. It could be used to control an eb and flow system. To get the absolute benefits from growing food in aquaponics is achieved through automation. I've wanted to convert a dishwasher to a parts washer and that SS tub would be perfect as long as the pump could stand up to the more viscous fluid .

I had a thought during the video for gaining a water tight seal on the pump. Since you are using heat to help form the plastic around the fittings maybe you can line the plastic with hot glue as the buffer. I recall that this technique is already used by some heat shrink tubing manufacturers to achieve water tight outdoor electrical insulation solutions. Thanks for the videos!

Dishwashers make great stackable storage once the inner crap is gone & anything else i can get scrap money from. You'd love my place as only a fellow horder would understand with all the treasures i have stored. I use dishwashers for storing lpg gas bottles outside. I mainly do scrap metaling by picking up what people illegally dump i.e washing machines,fridges,freezers,microwaves,bikes. Tools don't normally get dumped. That said they do get thrown out at local transfer stations (rubbish that gets sorted into categories of metals & other classes for recycling) The stuff that gets dumped is astounding ,even new stuff. It's a bloody sacrilege

There were actually two mechanisms inside the Aquastop, that magnetic valve and some kind of pressure activated valve after it. I just cut it in half to remove that second mechanism.
Trying to make a hot water heater egg incubator, with auto water lever adjustment. The plan is to use the water heater element (which needs to be submerged) to heat the water in the stainless base. A bent metal cover could control the humidity. Worse case scenario I screw on two porcelain light bases and attach a circulation fan. Use with incubator controller XM-18 etc to run at ideal temp and rH with PID egg roller trays. Watch at Tully River Quail.

I was curious to the purpose of the fan in that dishwasher, the Integrated water softener - when I was a child (in our old kitchen), if there was a problem with the dishwasher we would pull it out of the kitchen cabinets and test it (looking for leaks, etc) and I would look at the side of it where the said water softener is fully exposed - transparent plastic water unit; water channels, main chamber of softener media, siphon tubes, etc. I found it fascinating to watch this when the dishwasher was filling.

I have seen them transform even in egg incubators :) but for that a fridge is much better as it has insulation and more space
