I think another thing with "collecting plushies/merchandise of a specific thing" vs "collecting Stanley cups" is that when it comes to plushies and the like, people buy them because it makes them happy to have them. People who have their entire room or collection themed around a single thing often stems from a place of affection for this particular thing, and it can be a really euphoric feeling of adding to that collection because it's adding to something you enjoy. Also, a lot of collectors can be archivists who can build collections for media preservation (I myself have gone out of the way to hunt down old DVDs or books that are no longer in production because they directly relate to something I care about, and I want to have a physical copy) It feels like most Stanley cup collections aren't born from a genuine love for Stanley cups, but rather seem to come from a desire for status or exclusivity. People aren't fighting for Stanley cups in stores because they care for the cups themselves, they want them because it's the hot, trendy thing at the moment, and the more they have, the more popular they'll be. Stanley collections feel superficial as opposed to other collections that carry some kind of deeper link with the collector
Took the words right out of my mouth. I think, if I were to simplify the difference, people who collect something specific do so for themself and their own love. If you were to ask, they’d give you a reason that’s personal to them. But those who collect Stanley cups do so to hold status and popularity over others, if Stanley cups were not popular, they wouldn’t collect them. It’s a very simple “I do it for myself” vs “I do it for others” kind of situation.
Absolutely. If you asked someone why they collect X, they would give you an essay about what they passionately appreciate about the thing they're collecting. But if you asked someone why they collect Stanleys, you probably wouldn't get an answer outside of "they're limited edition and hard to get."

Every single double walled insulated stainless steel water bottle or thermos has is soldered with lead at the bottom where it’s sealed after they create the vacuum. In every single example, it does not come into contact with anything unless it breaks at that point and gets exposed. So Stanley technically does have lead, but so does every other brand. Not a single person knew how to even use those lead test kits and botched every single one of them. It was so cringe to watch.

Honestly the real problem with this whole stanely cup and other reusable water bottle craze is how the people will collect every possible color/variation of the cup just because they can. It defeats the whole purpose of using one or four bottles that will stop you from using more money in the long run instead of buying or using a plastic bottle everyday that’ll cost more overtime
i feel like even if a water bottle is only "trendy" (a water bottle shouldn't be a trend anyways tbh) for a few months, you should buy what works best for you. i remember i saw a girl talk about owala on tiktok a few years back in like 2022 and so i got one because it was perfect for what i need, and she was right! i've tried others and they just don't do it for me, not even hydroflask. i don't feel the need to invest in another water bottle because mine serves its purpose both in size and functionality.
@@muwuriel8231 yes! the only thing is when i dropped mine the lid basically broke and wouldn't open so i had to replace it but thankfully they sell replacemint lids 😭
I have a few so that way I can use a different one while one is washing. It also kinda depends on if I need one that can keep the water cold. I also have an owala and it’s a nice water bottle. It’s a bit heavy sometimes after filling it up. I didn’t hear abt it on TikTok my mom just bought some for my family and I
water bottles shouldn’t really be a trend / popular.. they’re reusable water bottles ( that collecting of is a dumb idea the point is to waste less you’re doing nothing )
I have one lidded cup, and three thermos flasks of different volumes. I do make coffee or mate tea in the morning to carry to my workplace almost every day. At work I purchase largest water bottles and fill a smaller reusable bottle to carry it around, which helps my water intake (I'm a librarian); don't be surprised, the reason for that is we are not provided with drinking water. I bought all of them when I used something else like an empty common water bottle, and felt I need a certain thing I didn't have. It wasn't "I need it in chartreuse", it was "I'd like something to put my coffee in when I'm on commute, and all I have is ceramic mugs". It's much, much cheaper because I brew my coffee at home (at most, $0,5 per cup), and I buy quality beans and quality filters. Plus I avoid single-use cups! I do use or used daily (!) all the water containers I have. I may be able to buy all the clutter I want. But where would I keep it?
I have 3 travel reusable water vessels for different needs. A Takeya giant water bottle, a 1L Chilly’s water bottle, and a tumbler thing with a straw (no handle). Don’t think I’ll ever need anything else unless they break. Oh and a zojirushi travel coffee mug, if that counts. But I love Chilly’s and Takeya. Good brands imo. I like the outdoorsy aesthetic of the OG Stanleys
i got bullied in middle school for not having the cool silly bandz and then the next week when my parents caved after i cried about it and bought me a bunch they werent trendy anymore. that reminds me of the stanley water cup craze. only a matter of time before the next one blows in and then is snuffed out again. all that to say, silly bandz were stupid and only good for slinging at my little brother
I got a Hydroflask in 2018-2019, not because of the hype necessarily (I was a high school boy who had no idea what was going on, I just wanted a water bottle), but it held up amazingly well. I still have it. I recently purchased a new one since I wanted a bigger size even though my old one was still going strong, and the quality has gone down significantly, the color already got scratched. Kinda disappointed when my old one was so nice :/
Girl yes, keep yapping! I love seeing a youtuber my age too. I get all the lovely school references! Also we a Yukon Bussys (Bucees) water bottle girly pop!
im gonna be so mad ive had an owala for years. the first time i saw them be popular is on twitter bc the lead singer of fall out boy has one so a lot of fall out boy people started to get them lol. then i saw it once a few weeks later on tiktok filmed like a stanley thing and i went😦
My husband thought I was nuts in 2021 when I came back from a half price book sale with a literal box of things I bought; one of those items was a box set of the death note anime. He's not complaining now.
I collect plushies, CDs, enamel pins, and merch for some of my favorite shows and games like Gravity Falls and Cuphead - probably partly fueled by undiagnosed ADHD. However, the difference between that and collecting only Stanley or Owala cups is because I am passionate about the things I collect and why; I can tell you all about why I love enamel pins as wearable art, or why Gravity Falls is a great show if you just asked. If you asked someone why they collect Stanleys, you probably wouldn't get as passionate of an answer outside of "it was limited edition and hard to get."
I have three reusable ones I use for different things but my grandma recently bought me this off brand Stanley from a DeeDees discounts , ohh my god it’s the BEST I’ve had . I still use the others for different things though
My dad has a few for his coffee that he alternates between depending on how he feels . I bought him one of those pill shaped ones from Barnes n noble too it’s so nice … I don’t drink hot drinks to go so I don’t need it anyway
My stance on having a collection of plushs (or whatever) vs a colletion of Stanly cups is that the cups are supposed to be reusable. You're supposed to reuse them so having a lot kind of defeats the whole purpose. But thats just my opinion.
Merch makes people happy. Stanleys dont really. Merch can mean thr entire world to someone! Ive never seen a stanley cup geniunely improve someone's life. Its the difference between trends and personal interests.
I got an Owala because of the trend because I’ve needed a water bottle for ages and could never find a non-leak one. I’m so sad I’ll prob get judged for it 😭 (not sad enough to stop using it tho. it rlly is amazing)
Tbh I never kept up with any waterbottle trend but I remember picking up a waterbottle when I saw one at the mall surplus store because just that morning my aunt was telling me I should have one. I still have it almost a year later. its nice, black with a minimalist Japanese woodblock wave design, spillproof, stays cold, has a flip up straw, carries like 650 ml and came with the little rubber bottom cap. Its been my main water vessel ever since and I still never remember what brand it is. Good bottle.
The thing with hydroflask is that i dont think people where actively buying multiple of them and where mainly decorating them with stickers. But its the opposite. It feels less friendly and more sad tbh
I'm about halfway through the video so I don't know if you will talk about it, but your plushie example made me think of the (stereotypically masculine) tennis shoe collection and how similar in collection ethos yet different in terms of consumer demographics...I'm here for the discourse and wholly admit that when I think of stanley cup collectors the stereotypical version I see is more feminine and wonder if that comes into play with the ridicule for the cattiness, consumerism, and classism that may (not) be as commonly addressed within the shoe collection space (ie it exists in both spaces but one is far more critiqued from people outside the collection niche)
I don't get collecting water bottles but I found a super cute care Bears Stanley dupe cup and I'm getting it because I lost my old reusable water bottle.
I’m convinced all RUclipsrs have literally two parts The narrator/actor that reads all the information and goes over everything in perfect detail And the editor who hates the narrators bullshit and can never put up with said bullshit
I own a Owala watee bottle that I use for school and I like it quite a lot because it looks nice and colorful, I like the straw and spout it has and the closing lid. But honestly the influx of Stanley quencher cups I've seen around my school is crazy to me, and I think it only started happening after Christmas of 2023, since I never saw a Stanley cup before then. I'm just waiting to see if someone will eventually drop their Stanley cup on the floor or accidentally knock it cup off of a table/desk, because I know they arent leak-proof and will just spill everywhere (Plus, they seem like a bit of a hassle to carry because these cups arent super portable.)
29:37 speaaking of primary colors, there’s this one primary color themed product at the checkout line at ulta that is matte liquid eyeshadow/eyeliner and its sooo cute its by “about-face” and i think the set is called “the minis”? But it fits your vibe, not promo i just also live for primary color themed things
i think the issue with buying like 30 stanleys is the fact that its almost guaranteed that they will end up being thrown away just like every other water bottle trend.
I got a hydro flask when it was the most popular water bottle. Only difference with me is that I still use it 6 years later like it’s SUPPOSED TO BE USED
i have a green stanley, i think its pretty cute but the main reason i like it because it actually makes me drink water. before i would maybe drink a half a bottle a week so i would be drier than a bag of stale doritos but now i drink a ton of water yipee!!!
Meanwhile I have a bunch of different waterbottles that I use for different kinds of beverages bc if I put my water into my apple juice waterbottle then they're automatically dirty and need to be triple cleaned 💀
I got an owala like a while ago (before it was popular to my knowledge) because I needed a new one because my old one grew mold and I just picked it up in a target and now I’m seeing them all the time like bro??
I was just thinking about the Owala’s becoming the next Stanley recently- I work at a nicer daycare and a lot of kiddos and their parents have them now. Heck I was gifted one for teacher appreciation week and I won’t lie, I use it a lot more than my knock off Stanley now bc it’s pretty
for me the best waterbottle trend was like ten years ago on my school here on Brasil, I don't know if it was in other places but I think probably was, It wasn't a specific brand, they sold it everywhere here, they were bottles with a fan on top and a water spray that you could use to cool off it was amazing.
heyyy, not from the u.s here, but water bottles have been popular here for years (mostly among students). it used to just be the regular plastic water bottles but insulated bottles have been popular for a few years now as well after aquaflask blew up, (hydroflask too) and since then you'll usually find either aquaflasks, hydroflasks, your regular plastic water bottles (reusable; we just call them water bottles if they're reusable) and other insulated water bottles. this was mostly because we (most (almost all) schools) didn't have water fountains, only bottled water (the consumable ones) from the canteen (cafeteria) that was pretty expensive or there'd be a water vending machine that'd dispense water (just the water) for some change. anyway, was simply wondering how water bottle culture is in other countries, especially the u.s. also, why do they call them reusable cups? is it the coffee/cafe culture?
I got an Owala for free (I didn’t even know they were popular until recently) because it was some promotion that got sent to the house we just moved into or something, and honestly it’s the best water bottle I could ask for. It’s just white, but its great and the cold lasts for a while!
The virality of these items makes me wanna spend less money, because of how crazy people are with things these days. Like no thanks, I want no part of consumerism.
if you work at the airport you can take home water bottles that arent claimed I have over 100 hydroflasks and like 50 yetis I have run out of room for them and I try to give them away to every one I know
I have a few different types of water bottles but it’s because I’ve noticed with my dumbass self is that I drink more water using certain cups- but that type of cup changes occasionally 😭 so like I use one for like a week or two before switching to a different one because I like it better that week
I'm autistic and one of my special interests FOR SOME GOD FORSAKEN REASON is food storage. There be water bottles and bento boxes and shit with my favorite colors and characters printed on it that I have too many of. xC

i feel like even if a water bottle is only "trendy" (a water bottle shouldn't be a trend anyways tbh) for a few months, you should buy what works best for you. i remember i saw a girl talk about owala on tiktok a few years back in like 2022 and so i got one because it was perfect for what i need, and she was right! i've tried others and they just don't do it for me, not even hydroflask. i don't feel the need to invest in another water bottle because mine serves its purpose both in size and functionality.
not me literally looking to buy an owala before I saw this comment lol guess that’s my sign from the universe. did you get the freesip btw?
@@muwuriel8231 yes! the only thing is when i dropped mine the lid basically broke and wouldn't open so i had to replace it but thankfully they sell replacemint lids 😭
@@toyafan omg thats so great to hear thanks!!
@@muwuriel8231 ofc! i just recommend being careful w the lid cause for some reason i never had good luck w owala lids LMAO
I have a few so that way I can use a different one while one is washing. It also kinda depends on if I need one that can keep the water cold.
I also have an owala and it’s a nice water bottle. It’s a bit heavy sometimes after filling it up. I didn’t hear abt it on TikTok my mom just bought some for my family and I
OMG GUYS WURLD POSTED‼️‼️
There's a girl at my school who had a hit list and she was attacking people with it.. Don't believe me? We're literally on the news 😭
dont get me wrong i see the craze in the stanleys but I've had my hydro for YEARSSSSS this thing has fr gotten me thru thick and thin
water bottles shouldn’t really be a trend / popular.. they’re reusable water bottles ( that collecting of is a dumb idea the point is to waste less you’re doing nothing )
They still haven't fixed Flint's water????
As someone from Michigan. No they haven’t fixed it they burnt the water
i got bullied in middle school for not having the cool silly bandz and then the next week when my parents caved after i cried about it and bought me a bunch they werent trendy anymore. that reminds me of the stanley water cup craze. only a matter of time before the next one blows in and then is snuffed out again. all that to say, silly bandz were stupid and only good for slinging at my little brother
sometimes i think, why do people want these so bad? and then I remember that silly bandz existed and the hold they had on my elementary school
I just use the water bottles I have already or ones that are on clearance at like a TJ max. They work exactly like any other cups.
Wurld can we have more of your scrumptious book recs
absolutely!!
the mention of vsco girls gave me whiplash. AND THEN THE TIKTOK of the re-enactment. I thought i’d escaped it forever.
WURLD be doing a WURLD moment, out here posting videos and shit
im gonna be so mad ive had an owala for years. the first time i saw them be popular is on twitter bc the lead singer of fall out boy has one so a lot of fall out boy people started to get them lol. then i saw it once a few weeks later on tiktok filmed like a stanley thing and i went😦
My husband thought I was nuts in 2021 when I came back from a half price book sale with a literal box of things I bought; one of those items was a box set of the death note anime. He's not complaining now.
another insane reusable cup trend that i fear is never ending is the amount of starbucks cups people buy
4:13 We all grow up, and eventually, they'll be 22 in no time, calling people old will become hypocritical since everybody ages.
WURLD POSTED LIFE IS GOOD
Merch makes people happy.
WURLD MOMENT‼️‼️
I just found your channel today, two videos in and I’m subbing if only for the Bojack references.
i forgot the kind but i have a big blue reusable bottle and i havent gotten another since, i cant comprehend spending so much on so many cups 😂
Before vine/musically/tiktok, the popualr water bottle was the Camelback. I think people forgot because there wasn't an asthetic attach to it. 🍫
I don't get collecting water bottles but I found a super cute care Bears Stanley dupe cup and I'm getting it because I lost my old reusable water bottle.
I’m convinced all RUclipsrs have literally two parts
The narrator/actor that reads all the information and goes over everything in perfect detail
And the editor who hates the narrators bullshit and can never put up with said bullshit
INDUSTRY PLANTS
Anything 'sustainable' is not a sustainable business model so we have to make them trendy
i think the issue with buying like 30 stanleys is the fact that its almost guaranteed that they will end up being thrown away just like every other water bottle trend.
Lmao one of my friends in middle school had a reusable water bottle before they were super popular, the lids in my grade dubbed it “the blood stick”
OMG WURLD POSTED ‼️‼️‼️
love the saiki k intro!111!!! 🔥🔥
heyyy, not from the u.s here, but water bottles have been popular here for years (mostly among students). it used to just be the regular plastic water bottles but insulated bottles have been popular for a few years now as well after aquaflask blew up, (hydroflask too) and since then you'll usually find either aquaflasks, hydroflasks, your regular plastic water bottles (reusable; we just call them water bottles if they're reusable) and other insulated water bottles. this was mostly because we (most (almost all) schools) didn't have water fountains, only bottled water (the consumable ones) from the canteen (cafeteria) that was pretty expensive or there'd be a water vending machine that'd dispense water (just the water) for some change.
anyway, was simply wondering how water bottle culture is in other countries, especially the u.s. also, why do they call them reusable cups? is it the coffee/cafe culture?
I have the owala cup because my friends told me they are a really good quality water bottle and I needed a water bottle
Sure feels like some don't wanna reuse the reuseable
nah i still see stanleys but owalas ARE the new stanley craze
I have seen those Gatorade bottles anywhere I go even in different countries I swear they are sentient and out to haunt you /hj
I'm here for the yapping. ✊🏾
I got an Owala for free (I didn’t even know they were popular until recently) because it was some promotion that got sent to the house we just moved into or something, and honestly it’s the best water bottle I could ask for. It’s just white, but its great and the cold lasts for a while!
And I oop😳- and I opp😦- sksksks😂… do you like my hydroflask💦?
Me with my collection of enamel pins: *sweating*
New wurld vid it’s a good day
Where I live there isn't anywhere to even recycle bottles.
love the new hair 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
I WANT MORE BOJACK REFERENCES IN VIDEOS😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾
the biggest reason i didnt get a hydroflask (after the trend died bc theyre actually decent quality) was bc theyre expensive
Yo you got a sub for that Crunchyroll Death Note rant alone
Yeah, I just got like two water bottles that I fill over and over and over lol. For like two years
The virality of these items makes me wanna spend less money, because of how crazy people are with things these days. Like no thanks, I want no part of consumerism.
I keep buying these reusable bottles because I keep losing them 🫠
Thank you for the video Wurld, u make me wanna become a better person
its ironic they named a water bottle "stanley"
yknow because he wasnt given water
In middle school I had a yeti and any time it fucking fell I would hear like 3 people go “skskskskskaksk” 😭😭😭
if you work at the airport you can take home water bottles that arent claimed I have over 100 hydroflasks and like 50 yetis I have run out of room for them and I try to give them away to every one I know
OMGGG dont get be started on owala. Half my school population have owala cups now
A lot of collections have personality or variety. The Stanley cup collectors get a new color. They are not the same
I have a few different types of water bottles but it’s because I’ve noticed with my dumbass self is that I drink more water using certain cups- but that type of cup changes occasionally 😭 so like I use one for like a week or two before switching to a different one because I like it better that week
I'm autistic and one of my special interests FOR SOME GOD FORSAKEN REASON is food storage. There be water bottles and bento boxes and shit with my favorite colors and characters printed on it that I have too many of. xC
