Born in Spokane in 1937 and grew up with in 1 /2 Block of the river it was a time of incredible freedom for a young boy allowing him to be Huck Fin and yes Tom Sawyer all in the same day. I graduated from Roger’s in 1956. Perhaps some of you remember the A and W drive in at the bottom of Division St Hill it was the place to be on Friday night what memories
Wow, takes me back. To those who say so little has changed -- OMG. You can start with the fact that we pass three drive-in movie theaters on the way out of town -- the Auto-Vue, the Y and the Starlite. And so much more.
Im not from Spokane nor have i ever been there lol but i noticed that a few of the businesses in the 1983 video (in the area of Division and Lincoln) are still there. The gas station and the Steer Inn behind it. And much of US 2 north of the split with 395/Division was still 2 lane and not very developed. I could make out where the future (circa 2009?) interchange with the North Spokane freeway would be by locating some nearby power lines. It’s interesting how things change within the course of your life and to see how things were the year before you were born (I was born in 1984 lol).
The lack of traffic!!! Unbelievable - seems like only a quarter of the cars in 1983 on roads that are now so crowded you wait for two light changes to get through an intersection.
What an amazing find! I started driving around this time not to mention walking division street with my friends. This video brings back such memories right to Riverside high.
I loved white Elephant, Zips, and later when I was in my 20's the pine shed....I still go to zips, except its really expensive now. White Elephant is gone,... and Division, the street they are driving changed to a one way
The Diamond bowl that was torn down in about 1992 and then sat as an empty lot for 30 years until Maverick finally built a gas station there. That always peeved me. I loved diamond bowl as a kid.
As an 80's kid. I still have good memories from back then. Always liked seeing the spinning 76, when we would drive by. Going to the Dairy Queen that eventually became New Harbor (miss New Harbor too). Countless White Elephant memories...It should have stayed around! The old Pizza Hut locations...Straw Hat Pizza, Chuck Wagon. Anybody remember the Panda burger joint too?! I miss Pizza Haven in the Flour Mill and, Godfather's Pizza as well!
Such a cute city! Love the area but the smoke and long and grey winters have gotten to me over the last 2 years so sadly this is my last year in Spokane! I’ll absolutely cherish these last few months I’m here for sure but I’m so ready to be in a different region of our beautiful country 🇺🇸 probably somewhere a little more green and warmer ❤
@@206Nish No and Yes. White Elephant closed a bit over a year ago. Got torn down, and now a frigging Panda Express is being built there. General Store is still going.
I remember being around Spokane in 1983. I remember when they changed lower Division to a one-way street for some reason. Look at those telephone booths. I've been to a lot of those places over the years: The Zips (which is still there), The General Store (Still there), The Cathay Inn (Still there with the new building, ate there last week), The K-Mart (gone along with the movie theater they built there years after this and is now where the Lowes is), The White Elephant (Closed after the 'pandemic' and they are building a Panda Express there now). They Kentucky Fried is still there. Used to get food there in the 90s. The North Division Six. I saw lots of movies there in the 80s and 90s. I probably saw Return of the Jedi seven times that year(which wasn't easy, because I lived in Cheney). I don't think it was playing at the North Division theater, though. I can't believe that everything on the west side of the road turns to trees once you get up to where the North Town Mall will be. I don't remember that, but again that was a long time ago. It's weird seeing open fields where the Target and Best Buy are now. Then you've got the drive-in theater where the Newport theater would be later. Then it closed and was dilapidated for years before they finally tore it down. Some other observations: 3:09 Where the Comic Book Shop was in the early 90s. I got comics there everyweek after I got my license and a car. 4:41 Didn't know that used to be a Dairy Queen. I don't think there is anything there now. 5:55 There is a Staples where the Rosauers was there. 6:49 Where the coin shop eventually was and I think still is. 9:55 Looks like the Taco Time is there already.
From the looks of google maps it appears that South Division got one wayed somewhere along the line (paired with North Ruby St.) wheras in ‘83 it was still a 4-6 lane boulevard
I was born in 89. Lived all but 2 years of my life here. Super cool to see a version of city I never even knew. And trust me. I skated every inch of this town in the late 90's early 00's.
There are a lot of memories on North Division. It is amazing how few red lights they hit. I left Spokane for the Navy in 1976, but remember Spokane well. 😀
I have only lived in Spokane since 2012, but this was pretty cool to watch! I do see many things that are gone and some businesses that have been here for half of forever. I watched it with my husband who is from Spokane and he remembers a lot of what was in this video. Also, it is kind of funny to see that some people couldn't drive back then either! Edited to add that I noticed the Cathay Inn sat in a different position in this video, versus the way it is now. My husband said he couldn't remember exactly, but thought there might've been a fire at some point?
People in the early 1980s thought 1.15 to 1.25 a gallon was high lol. Only time i paid that little for gas since i learned how to drive was during the height of the pandemic near Atlanta when the markets crashed $1.25 a gallon if i can recall. Those prices arent coming back lol
Yeah Newport Hwy-US2 certainly looked pretty forested and rural back then, 2 lanes lol. Now its been 4 laned lol Traffic lights where there used to be stop signs
36:26 not a single house or trailer in Riverside, no high school, first sign of civilization is Delberts old Conoco gas station. Riverside Family Foods isn't even built yet!!!

For those who experienced the fantastic 80’s, you know it. For those who didn’t, you missed out.

9:28 the Northtown Mall (Northtown shopping center) looks so different!
Yeah it’s dead now and basically empty 😂

Watching them drive feels relaxing

I get it... record-breaking 106 this weekend. Times are changing. good luck in your travels.
So interesting seeing how much has changed
White elephant (building) and general store still here

@@louky264 Went to Ruby and Brown arterials.
It looks so familiar yet so distant. at 9:04 I've drove that stretch of road many times and it looks so weird.
Wow division has changed so much! I can’t believe that taco time at Queen and Division has been there all this time!
I was born in 89. Lived all but 2 years of my life here. Super cool to see a version of city I never even knew. And trust me. I skated every inch of this town in the late 90's early 00's.
No Ruby Street arterial
and no city planner...ever LOL
That would come in 1995.

Burger at Zips was $1.25. Did I see that right?
They're a good place....
Went to SCC College in 1985-87. Brings back great memories!

I am dumbfounded by the 15:00 mark....the town ENDS right at the Newport HWY turn off!!!
Yeah Newport Hwy-US2 certainly looked pretty forested and rural back then, 2 lanes lol. Now its been 4 laned lol Traffic lights where there used to be stop signs
Watching this on 08/29/2024!😮🎉
NEWPORT HIGHWAY WITH NO NORTHPOINT SHOPPING CENTER?! WOW!!!
yeah, right?
Wow 😲😳 back in the old days
Gas was "up to" $1.19/gallon there at Mobil at the corner of Francis because school hadn't started yet...
My heart aches…
Pretty cool! 👍
Wow, no traffic lights at Deer Park interchange and the road is only 2 lanes most of the way…
All those message boards on the sidewalk 😂
OMG the 20:48 mark...no gas stations, no supermarket, no mini strip mall type thingy, no McDonalds....no stoplight...
Im surprised with the lack of traffic. 8/27/83 what day was it? Judging from the shadows it looks morning.
11:56 K-Marche!
Did you do one in Vancouver, Washington?
For people sayings nothing has changed, I'd like to point out Francis and everything north of it....
5:38 General Store!
Ha ha...saw where my old house was that I owned from 2002-2018. Nothing there...not even an easement, driveway...nothing!
My dad was teaching drivers ed for sears then and there
36:26 not a single house or trailer in Riverside, no high school, first sign of civilization is Delberts old Conoco gas station. Riverside Family Foods isn't even built yet!!!
Division doesn’t look much different than it does now
Lot has changed since 1960's in Spokane Washington especially division street
There were a lot more restaurants and gas stations on Division back then it seems😂
No Ruby / Division split
Didn't show DICK'S drive in at the beginning. Been in Spokane a very long time.😊😊
Highway 2 is not an SR, it is a U.S. route spanning from the west to the east coast.
It is both. In WA State it is codified in RCW as SR2.
There is a split in US 2 between St Ignace MI and Rouses Point NY
Still some ugly signs that you see... reminds itself of 82nd & 122nd (& probably the old Union Ave., (now MLK Blvd.) & there were a lot of them.
In 1982 my dad hated driving Division - ugly signs and "Sprawl"!! 😝
Judging by the cars was this the 1950s?
I mean, it only says 1983 in the title..
@@jakestoe Looks more like the 70's. lol
Definitely in the 80s. Look at Camp Chevrolet's lot, they had an S10 PU and an S10 Blazer. First year for the S10 was 1982.
@@Heartboy1031 A lot of Spokane still looks like a 1983 that is itself stuck in the 1950s. I say that with the utmost fondness.
Spokane is perpetually stuck in 1970's
