I got a question, if I may ask. In the video (43:36) where Exophoric Reference is explained, one of the examples is "How would you like to own that car?". It is listed as "Exophoric", however, is it not "Endophoric" as it is understood that the speaker is talking about "that car"? If I am not mistaken, it becomes Exophoric if it was "How would you like to own that?". I apologize if this question is missing the point.
Thank you for your comment. I can see you were really paying attention. Great. However, it is exophoric, because whether you say 'that' or 'that car', you only know which car by seeing the pointing. You are correct that they are different. 'that' is a head item, while 'that' in 'that car' is a modifier, so there is a difference. But in both cases we only know what item is referenced by seeing where the speaker points. LIke I said, I am impressed that you watched, paid attention, and were willing to comment. Good luck with your studies.
Sir, it would be wonderful to have you explain my question: Is it like 2 ways to categorize reference? 1st way: personal, demonstrative, comparative and 2nd way: reference inside and outside the text or all of these are 5 types of reference?
Personal, demonstrative and comparative references can all refer to something inside the text (this is endophoric reference) or outside the text (this is exophoric reference).
Im so lucky that i found your video :)
