Wow. This was where most Army personnel were brought into SK. I remember being there, and that there was one really nice hotel on base where I stayed on leave during the year I was there. I was stationed in 동 두 천. Anyway, yes, Most military posts are made to look fairly homogenous, and help people feel more at home, no matter where in the world they are. I do remember the 80s version of Seoul Station.
My mom was stationed out of Yongsan in the 80s! She'll watch your videos with me sometimes and likes to point out what's the same and what's changed since she left. As a side note, she almost married her Korean boyfriend at the time, but they decided it would be too difficult as an interracial couple and especially hard on any kids they had. She is SO happy that you and Kurt are able to be together ❤
as a Born Londoner i can tell you bagels arent a thing here! i saw that place a while back and found it hilarious! we do sandwiches!! we have the most wonderful sandwiches and rolls but you wont really find bagels unless its in a jewish bakery. i imagine perhaps the owner went to a place called brick lane and went to the famous bagel bake - its famous because its a bit novelty and feels different almost like being in new york lol thank you for showing us around the base and beautiful autumn colours
I agree but wouldn't call Brick Lane bagels novelty, I moved to London 14 ears ago and they were already there so not such a novelty. Also apparently going on since 1885 ;) I love them, people can say what the want but they are delish!
before I started watching I looked at your darkroom uploads and immediately found the one with the leaf and put it into my cart, cause its great... and then I just spent the last two weeks reading so much about Native American history for my American History class 🙃 and it was fascinating. So your cause really speaks to me right now ❤
Thank you for going to Yongsan Army base.. I think you were on the South post.. that’s where most everyone stayed while they were there, however there were some barracks by the health clinic where I worked on the main post. The men and Katusa’s lived in those.. The women vets and married and those with families lived on the South post. I’m still amazed that no one is there ! Are you glad you went there ? I had a blast there and even married over there by the American and Korean embassy.. Fun video.. Korea has come a long way since I was there in 1973-74..
My British, London, bagel obsessed opinion…Brick Lane (in east London) has been the home to bagels for nearly 200 years, they are smaller than the bagels you get in shops etc and they do not come toasted (you also only get one type-plain, but you sand have them filled with lox, cream cheese, salt beef etc) Just for the bagel they are approx 60p each (900ish won) the famous bakery is open 24 hours a day. They are small (surprising light) morsels of deliciousness. It’s bread, so down to own preference but usually you would eat untoasted on the day of purchase and toasted after that, to “freshen” it up a bit. Usually the tougher bagels are ones that have been boiled too long (just my opinion) I ❤️ 🥯🥯🥯
Not Brit, but was lucky enough to have a British friend make me brunch, and they definitely toasted their bagels! Wasn't even with smoked salmon, just cream cheese/ butter/ jam, but yeah, the bagels were toasted. I imagine an untoasted bagel would be kind of doughy/ chewy?
So much love to you Cari! ❤️ Thank you for supporting Adopt A Native Elder!! I’m from a different tribe, but we do all we can to support other Nations, and our Elders are the hearts of our communities and culture.
I had two huge Ginko trees in my front yard when I was little. They always felt magical. They were so tall and grand and all the leaves would fall all at once like snow. Always makes me happy to see them.
Your videos bring me so much joy and peace! I like watching them at night right after I'm done with everything and all cozy in bed. It makes me feel like I'm watching a friend tell me about her day. It's very relaxing. I absolutely love you as a human being and your taste in books! I've read so many of your recommendations. I hope you keep making more such videos for all of us to watch and enjoy. Lots of love
Yo Cari! Funny they kept the family housing units on the base. I lived in that area from 2007-2011. I am heading to Korea 15 Dec after being away for 10 years and was just wondering what Yongsan looked like.
There's a German village in Korea called "Namhae German Village" (because of the German-Korean relations during the 60s) that i always wanted to visit... I wonder if it would feel like that for me, walking through that city as a German :)
In the Yongsan Garrison, there used to be an education center that was operated by the University of Maryland. I went there during the summer semester. That was before the US army base in Pyeongtaek was built. At that time, civilian students of that education center were allowed to enter that base.
FYI for everyone, London and by extension the UK does not have bagels, lol. There are 2 particularly 'famous' shops in east London but they're not that great. I miss bagels so much haha, especially Montreal style!
Equally excited to see a new vlog and hear your voice.... While also hoping you don't overwork and burnout. Mental health #1, go Cari :) thank you for sharing your slice of life.
i used to live at that army base when I was younger and I had no idea they've moved everyone out of it! its so strange but also nice to see the place I remember from my childhood :) thanks cari
Yongsan has basically been reduced in size to just encompass the Dragon Hill Lodge. That will still be a hotel for the U.S. military. The area of Yongsan garrison known Camp Coiner, a separate Army camp until the size of Yongsan swelled and enveloped it, is supposed to be the future site of the U.S. embassy.
I lived at that military base with my family in 1999 when I was 5yo! It was such an amazing experience and my love for Korea forever stayed with me because of it. My father was stationed there many times throughout the years and I moved to Korea on my own and lived in the Daegu area after college. Very cool to see what it looks like now before it’s gone!
Fantastic video lots of content the leaves i know about my back garden is full of them but very wet as its Scotland. Loved the Eclipse it was super cool. Take care
Was pulling an alnighter(exams approaching 😖) ... Finally when I completed my work, found your video notification...(its 5 am here btw 🙃) ...Nothing could be a better gift for all that studying that I did!!! Thaaankkkk youuu❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Cari for showing me Yongsan Base, how it looks now. When I was last there was...Can't remember what year. I was able to get in, thanks to my GI friend. I had a crab leg and prime rib dinner for 12 US. The officer club had slot machines and a Filipino band, I remember. It must have been late 90s or early 2000s. It was US indeed in the middle of Seoul.
Gosh, the army base looks so surreal because of the normalcy of the homes. It could just be any subdivision in the United States. It's amazing how they have awakened a lot of nostalgia for some people though and drawn a lot of interest from people who would like to visit. I definitely got a kick out of the London Museum of Bagels. I don't think bagels are a particularly iconic food in London, no -- but I still love the idea and interesting decor for some reason.
Aaaah so excited and happy to watch the vlog~~ and as a Londoner having the first thing I see be "London" really was a pleasant surprise ☺️ thank you so much Cari😄
Its amazing that you were not able to visit the base when it was functioning. The seven years I lived in Seoul (1996-2003) I made friends with people in the clubs in itaewon which later became friendships. Those friendships had their perks, they would always invite me on base to Dragon Hill lodge for their Mexican nights or seafood nights. I remember stuffing my face with tacos and enchiladas and great margaritas for what was about 20 use dollars aka 22,000 won. I could barely get a 1/5 of that and not as nice in TGIF's or Tony Romas in Myungdong. Another nice perk was being able to get things from the commesary. Technically we were not allowed inside but could send friends to shop for us, they had a few "marts" around the base on both sides of the road and anyone on base could do simple shopping. Pre covid (2019) I did managed to go to Itaewon since at that time the Netflix drama about itaewon bar was all the rave. I was shocked how dead itaewon was on a Saturday night at midnight. It did make me miss my good old days. I do miss my ginkgo leave strolls..
I have always wondered what the U.S. army bases looked like here in Korea… and honestly.. I actually love that the houses look just like back home 😍 Also.. the shirt you are wearing when you were making food is literally so cute! And YES the air has been so terrible lately 🥵
It felt like i traveled to an American suburb hahaha and yes thankfully that rain on monday cleared us up a little - hope its better where you are, seoul was lovely yesterday!
In the summer of '94, I was studying at Yonsei University. I had a chance to go the Yongsan U.S. Eighth Army base to see the fireworks for Independence Day. I guess they won't have such fireworks there anymore.
I just watched Spencer (the Princess Diana biopic) and seeing those cafe scenes with the Royal family and her, clenched my heart again. 💔 HAHA but I enjoyed the rest of the video as always 😊
Those barracks give off strong college/summer camp vibes. Semi-dark academia if it had more of an American Southwest flavor? It's so cool that Yongsan is being turned into a park. As for how to open up your email without feeling like you're both being smacked in the face and falling into an abyss, yes, make filters, labels, and actions like mark as read or put into trash. It will take some time in the beginning to set things up, but once you do and then fine-tune as you go, it'll be so much easier to wade through the chaos.
now i want a (toasted) bagel with tons of cream cheese! thank you for sharing the last of autumn with us, i get to live it again through your videos because it’s spring for me at the moment so i really appreciate it :D

Such a unique legacy with all the people and families who lived on the base and really interesting to hear their stories. Gives a different angle to what you might think happens on a military base. The housing style is definitely very North American and its funny that its seen as a novelty to people from Seoul but can seem so normal to us lol
the base gave me eerie Lost energy, or maybe Wandavision... especially the barbecue set up?? idk. Makes me want to know what they're hiding there behind the cookie cutter-ness and the guise of Mary Lu lol. I love how a place with so much history can feel both so alive and abandoned at the same time, super cool!
I used to get bagels from Brick Lane years ago. I worked at a large hospital not far from there & even went at 3 or 4 am when the munchies struck as they were open 24 hours. The cream cheese & smoked salmon were delish.😋
It's interesting to see how Korea made use of the US after. The base I know of here has become some sort of industrial and business park. Still a few buildings around from the time when it was an active base, but many have been turned into offices or restaurants. I think there's a few other bases around too.
Yep, bagels [at least in London] are not toasted - and the two rival bagel shops in Brick Lane [one next to the other, the owners are also related] are way less ‘polished’ than the London Bagel Museum 😉
i actually thrifted it a few years ago in busan and its my absolute favorite :') the only tag on it is in japanese or else i'd tell you the brand hahha

thank you for sharing the last of autumn with us, i get to live it again through your videos because it’s spring for me at the moment so i really appreciate it :D
thanks for being there with me^_^
As someone who grew up on military stations, it's strange how all of them just feel like home - no matter the city. 😄
Interesting idea to retain it so - i'm sure the civilians would be curious to see how it looks, especially since its the American feel in the middle of Seoul.
A park in the middle of the city (from all the maps i've seen, Yongsan is very central!) would be such a joy!
Loved them autumn feels! 🍂

Cari are also going to visit the place where they shoot home town cha cha? Would love to see you touring in there. ❤😍

Such a unique legacy with all the people and families who lived on the base and really interesting to hear their stories. Gives a different angle to what you might think happens on a military base. The housing style is definitely very North American and its funny that its seen as a novelty to people from Seoul but can seem so normal to us lol
The line to get a picture with the speed limit sign was my favorite haha

I appreciate a lot the fact that you do fundraisers with your prints 💜
Where is the rainbow scarf from? It looks so cute! 💚
Film photos came out really nice!! Which film stock were you using?
I grew up on Camp Pendleton so this is a very bizarre, interesting video!
i have only driven through camp pendelton on the 5 about a billion times - weird that all the way in Korea is the first base i've ever been on hahaha
