Loved The Wishing Game!! When I’m in a reading slump, I re-read Harry Potter. It’s my comfort read.
Can't wait to hear your final thoughts on Best Served Cold! It's one of my fav Abercrombie books to this day. I LOVE his female protagonists and I found that book so satisfying!

I’m also going through a reading slump but I personally always get them around this time until the new year. Probably because I’m tired and focusing on the holidays or just stressing to finish my reading goals.

Great way to get over a reading slump! The Wishing Game sounds a little too sweet for me but it does seem like a heartwarming read, I may keep it for a rainy day

I'm so happy you read A Far Wilder Magic, I recently started the audiobook after several recommendations and I've enjoyed the first quarter of it quite a lot, so far! Also having some wild echolalia with the term Yu'Adir and can't stop repeating it to myself while I play Stardew Valley nowadays 🤣

I’ve been in a reading slump the last couple weeks too. I think for me it’s because I read soooo many books September & October I think I got a little burnt out
I was overseas for two weeks in October and didn't read at all the entire time. It's been so difficult for me to get back into reading again. I've finished two T. Kingfisher novellas and everything else has been an audiobook that I listen to on my work commute. I've really been struggling with it and have to force myself to pick up books even if I'm enjoying them.

I'm excited for "The Wordless Book." The blurb sounds fun and creepy. His artwork looks amazing too. Not sure when the release date is but I'm in.
I agree with your thoughts about The Wishing Game! I definitely got it as a "right book, right time" kind of thing, so the emotion definitely won me over, but there were some pacing issues. I think a lot of it relied on the characters experiences as children before the book to jump start their connections as adults, but even another 50 pages in the middle could have solved that. Alternatively, if the beginning was significantly condensed and the story was presented as a novella, I wouldn't question it.
Also, I see it tagged as magical realism, but was there actually any fantasy?? I don't remember anything beyond it being a wildly improbable scenario.
I couldn’t finish the wishing game. I couldn’t get on board with her wanting to adopt while she hasn’t even got her life together ( her relationship with her family and her living situation). And her love interest is a man she met when she was 13 and he was in his mid twenties 😬
Yes! * spoiler* I wanted her to get therapy at the end not a child
this is the reason why i gave it 3 stars. the competition part was the best part.

I enjoyed The Wishing Game but had the same feelings as you. Wished the relationships were little more developed.
The characters in A Far Wilder Magic are supposed to be based off of Roy and Riza though? Not Winry and Al. You know, an alchemist struggling to find patronage and a hunter (sharpshooter/gun expert) mistreated by an alchemist parent? Would die for each other but are being incredibly stupid about it?
I meant Ed not Al BUT now I feel DUMB about not seeing Riza and Roy!!!!!!!

I adored A Far Wilder Magic when I read it last year (and Alison Saft has a cozy Regency-era-esque fantasy coming out early next year!)
The Wishing Game I actually found to be quite problematic. I thought that it portrayed a lot of icky adult/child relationships: 1. The MC is a teacher, but is physically very affectionate with a student and discusses her adoption of him frequently and inappropriately 2. The MC meets her love interest when she is a teen and he's in his mid-twenties, and 3. The reclusive author character writes to children & all but encourages them to run away, never really seeing the consequences of his actions. I also thought the pacing was rushed and the contest aspect underdeveloped 🤷🏻♀

I had the same criticisms as you for The Wishing Game. I think you may have liked it more than me overall, but I just felt like the author cheapened her own story by not fleshing out relationships and then also pretty much glossing over the whole competition. The age gap in the romance also gave me a little ick since they first met when she was underage. I don't know, it felt weird to me.
