What made McCloud a great character is that yes he was the bad guy but he was not evil. Unlike the villains in the other Rio movies he was not sadistic and would not hurt someone for the saking of hurting someone. You could tell he had nothing for contempt for Bart Jason and when Mitchum rifle whips him,he is actually smiling.
Yes he did. All three of his wives were from Latin extraction. He also spoke fluent Spanish. It's ironic that there are those ignorant of these facts that try and paint him as a racist. I would imagine a minority would get a fairer shake from the Duke than any fukin' Liberal.

The words hadn't changed; just my perception.
Well, if Wayne hadn't been there, the second guy would have killed him. So, I guess you shouldn't bring a knife to a gun fight. You should bring several.
Truth is that knife might have killed him. But he'd of had plenty of time to empty his six gun into knife boy. That knife was struck low enough it might not have hit any organs.

The term "spaghetti western" should not be applied to a Sergio Leone film. Those films are works of art. Particularly Once Upon a Time in the West, one of the greatest films ever made.

Two words, John Wayne. No one else has come close in the action genre. Not for as long or for as many films as he made. And people did not care if they were redundant because they did not have playback when they were made or video etc. And they used real stunts not special effects. My personal favorite is probably, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Also a plus is there is no rap music in John Wayne movies
@@samhavoc1066 No. John Wayne had a set of standards he held his characters to. He refused to portray anything dishonorable, immoral, or anti-American. He wouldn't accept a role where the character was outside his code. He felt that it was important to do that. Audie Murphy did much the same. Audie took it a step further, and refused to even be seen smoking. He felt like it was wrong. Yes, it narrowed the selection of roles they played. But it didn't reduce their skill or talent.

Definitely, very underrated because it was just seen as a remake of Rio Bravo
Ed made lots of great stuff.....I didn't know he died
Thx for letting us know
Throughout shooting this, John Wayne continually referred to him as "that New York actor you hired."
@@Guitcad1 Okay 👍
According to Wiki, Asner is: 'the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, having won seven'.. Hey, I just checked and I share a b'day with Asner (and with Bob Gunton and Jonny Lee Miller)
A better fight scene than most of the crap Hollywood shovels out these days.
I love this movie. Have since the first time I watched it. Awesome stuff.
Christopher George (1929-1983) as the leader of the gang, great actor, later died of heart failure.
Classic line from John Wayne;-“We need a gun for a man who can’t shoot!”,then buys him a sawn off shotgun!
AND MISSISSIPPI still couldn't hit jack shit .....LOL
Great movie!!!!
Hey now...
...Duke told Mississippi to pay for his own gun!!!
But it made him feel better for shooting. Also he still has one barrel left.
Bom filme
@@tylerlamb9930 No, that was Mr Phillips in Rio Lobo.
Back when we had good movies and great actors
Yep, great movies where people dropped dead instantly from a thrown knife to the chest.
And not full of left wing liberal bullshit

"Stand up, Charlie. And, if you could, try to fall in the other direction."
My favorite John Wayne movie of all time. Mississippi, Bull, drunken sheriff, the duke…. All great roles!!
A classic scene from a classic Western. One of the best. I have it on DVD and watch if about once a year along with Rio Bravo.
Cowards always need other cowards near by before they do anything.
Which is why Trump can take on the entire democratic party by himself.
John Wayne sure did love Senoritas.
Yes he did. All three of his wives were from Latin extraction. He also spoke fluent Spanish. It's ironic that there are those ignorant of these facts that try and paint him as a racist. I would imagine a minority would get a fairer shake from the Duke than any fukin' Liberal.
George Penwell 👍🏻 you got that right my friend. 🇺🇸
GamerKat'71: Conservatives in the entertainment field these days, keep their heads down, and try not to make waves.
It would be interesting hearing his acceptance speech after winning an award among all the elite, sanctimonious, holier-than-though, silicone Liberals today. Their tiny, hateful heads would explode, and if they didn't like what he said he'd tell them to fuck right the hell off.
@@jaelge Oh please! You can be a racist and still like hispanic women and speak spanish. A racist can hate just one particular minority. Wayne is quoted, “I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.” He also help form the John Birch society, an extreme right wing organization. Do a little research and stop speaking out of your backside.
@@oo7warrior he also said "Very few Liberal are open-minded. They shout you down and won't let you speak unless you agree with them."
My favorite John Wayne cowboy movie! When I se it on, I have to stop and watch.
"Over the Mountains

Written by Edgar Allen Poe.
@@paulbeck6410 When I first saw the movie years ago, I just thought the El Dorado poem was a cute, innocent, fun poem. When I found out it was written by Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote macabre horror pieces like The Tell Tale Heart, the words of El Dorado seemed to take on a much darker tone and meaning that they had before. The words hadn't changed; just my perception.
'Never take bring a knife to a gun fight', I've been lied to my whole life
Well, if Wayne hadn't been there, the second guy would have killed him. So, I guess you shouldn't bring a knife to a gun fight. You should bring several.
That's cold-blooded right there. That was smooth. Mississippi James Caan.
Remember all those guys that said "never bring a knife to a gunfight"? I guess they were wrong...
Exactly;)
Looked like a knife fight at that range.
It worked for Coburn in "The Magnificent Seven".
Truth is that knife might have killed him. But he'd of had plenty of time to empty his six gun into knife boy. That knife was struck low enough it might not have hit any organs.
They are.
Love This scene!! Great Movie still to this day!!
“Always seems to take more than one, doesn’t it?”
“That’s because they’re no good.”

I have got this movie DVD of James Caan with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum in El Dorado as I am dedicating this movie to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyx
"It shouldn't have taken four of you." -that's what she said
I always liked McCloud as a character, he's a badguy but he's got a sense of honor.
That is part of his character. He probably did not like Jason but took his money, so would honor his agreement
of course, he wasnt a villain, he was just a guy doing a job.
SwordsmanMercenary “Call it professional curtesy.”
George played him as a consummate professional and his portrayal was spot on
i remember my mother took me and younger brother to a all-night john Wayne drive-in movie theatre, 4 johns wayne westers
Couldn’t that be described as child abuse?
Hope you turned out as cool as your mom
I can't believe they packed all that into a little over two minutes!
The quality of old film making. Watch just about any Hitchcock film. Any film from the 40s, 50s and 60sThey are awesome like that
Think I like ..by a smidgen
.Rio Bravo ..Dean is cool ..and the mighty Rio Bravo ,,rolls alongggg...
An they say never Never NEVER take a knife 🔪 to a gunfight. I beg to differ. One of the best classic scenes from old school Cowboy Westerns EVER and Awesome Classic Movie too.
The precursor to the line years later in Rambo, " It's over, Johnny"
Chris George was a friend. And and sweetheart of a guy. Missed by a lot of people.
This has always been one of favorite scenes from El Dorado, because there's no humor in it, it's a serious scene!
You make a great point because there's a lot of humor in this movie but the writers and director were wise enough to place it appropriately in the right places
I love John Wayne films and I am 34 years old. El Dorado is one of my top favorites.
And like he said, it shouldn't have tooken 4 of you Charlie
When you watch these westerns and then watch a spaghetti western, you realise how “too clean” the American westerns were.
Or, perhaps, how too "Bullshitalised" the Spaghetti Westerns were? :-)
yes, also many spaghetti westerns seem darker and more realistic (at least in many cases)
@@_Daniel_Plainview I also noticed the spaghetti westerns also portrayed race more realistically.
Nothing looks and sounds like a Clint Eastwood Spaghetti western they are masterpieces I think Quentin Tarantino has gotten inspiration for his films from the Amazing Spaghetti westerns with all the ruthless characters.
The term "spaghetti western" should not be applied to a Sergio Leone film. Those films are works of art. Particularly Once Upon a Time in the West, one of the greatest films ever made.
Ah, the good 'ol days when you could casually murder a man, as long as he "needed killin'".
I did love that movie as a kid, though.
Well technically it was self defense since the guy drew his gun giving our hero the reasonable expectation that his life was in imminent danger.
There wasn’t anything casual about this.
Kingston has it right. Notice how the good guys always wait for the other guy to draw... in literally every single western? That's for legal reasons. Counts as self defense
@john smith you want Antifa to kill some Nazis?
You know westerns aren’t documentaries, right?
Definitely one of my favorite westerns ever.
Takes me back to being a kid watching these with my Dad
Great movie and this is one of my favorite scenes!
As a kid, and after watching this movie a lot, Christopher George was the face I envisioned under Boba Fett's helmet.
not James Caan?
Awesome idea. The two are easily comparable, professionals, hired guns, but with a sense of honor.
One of the best Westerns ever made
He was limping when he left, he was limping when he got here
One of my favorite lines in this movie.
I hit the sign, and the sign hit him....lol.
@@TheNutriarat I find it even more funny personally that I read your comment with Caan's voice in my head subconsciously. Just the innocent, "trying to stand by his point" tone he used made it hilarious.
"You with the hat." In a room full of cowboys wearing hats. 😂
Only Duke Wayne could be in a "successful" western where he's playing Dominoes with two beautiful women . .
John Wayne is a man of great experience. He knows how things will end up. No need to be hurried..
Nice pause after impact. Like the pain didn't immediately register. *Then* it registers a second later ooooh Nelly! Nothing like a thrown knife to the vitals!
"It REALLY shouldn't have taken four of you, Charlie."
I miss good Western movies. They used to be a staple cinema form and we don't see them as often as we used to. I wish Hollywood would change that.
Thank you so much for this I know James Caan may be difficult to work with but he has to be classed as one of the greatest actors ever
Yes he did a great job of flopping around at the toll booth
I very much like James Caan but to call him "one of the greatest actors ever" is moronic.
This scene is so brilliant watch it over an over again top notch acting shouldn't av taken four of u like he said....
One of the best western i think!! Asolutely great!!!
I just saw this movie recently on TV. A classic story of Good vs Evil. No political bullshit. I miss those times
"A classic story of Good vs Evil"? Watch it again, and stay awake this time.
I love this movie. El Dorado, Rio Lobo & Rio Bravo. I love John Wayne & his movies. He was the best!
My all time favorite John Wayne Western.
I know nearly every line in it.
" He was limp n when he left"
" He was limp n when he got here "

Thanks for posting always loved that scene
Loved the look on the guys face after Thornton shot the gun out of his hand later in this scene
One my first introductions to James Caan(Godfather was the other)...Loved his acting style. One of The Most overlooked leading men. Later on, would be guesting on son Scott's show. RIP, Mr. Caan
one of the best wayne movies. loved mitchum george and wayne together. awesome
John Wayne always played John Wayne, which is why he was so good at it; but no one complained about it.
@@samhavoc1066
No.
But it didn't reduce their skill or talent.
those of you out there it is called tulare movement at a distance of less than 20 feet man with knife is faster than man with gun.. if you go through training for Police officer or security...you are taught this
..
Well pilgrim I'll stick with my gun in a knife fight.because I know of no gun with more then one throw in it.give me my 357 magnum anyday
Except the rule covers an assailant physically charging you knife in hand. Not drawing and throwing it.
I love the honor among thieves in this scene.
One of James Caan's best acting gigs. Good movie.
Red River is a good one too
"It shouldn't have taken four of ya..."
and he didn't even cheat.

Christopher George is so cool in this scene.
Yes, he was very cool! Shame there wasn't an actual shootout, between him and The Duke, or Robert Mitchum. Still, great movie!
CHRIS AND THE DUKE WERE GOOD FRIENDS SHAME CHRIS DIED SO YOUNG I LOVED HIS TV SERIES
I would love to see a remake in which they do just that. A shootout between McCloud and the Sheriff would be the most interesting.

I WILL GO FULL MISSISSIPPI “KNIFE HUNTER” ON HOLLYWOOD IF THEY MESS WITH THIS CLASSIC, AGAIN!!
His wife is Linda Day George of the Mission Impossible television series
Gotta like the guy with the scar, cool as a cucumber through it all.
It was Christopher George, that's the gunfighter John Waynes character was up against in the move.
Jimmy Caan with shoulders at perfect right angles. Legend.
Similar walk in Rollerball when the computer starts malfunctioning and James Caan in that moment comes to realize they've all been used.
One of my all time favorite movies and one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
My favorite scenes are the ones with Michelle Carey in leather pants.
The knife was a great choice because I've seen him shoot, lol.
