Notes and quotes: Will transcribe more soon
10:50 Yohann: went around world speaking to experts, your attn did not collapse, it’s been stolen
13:20 Yang: minds being strip mined by billion dollar co
    14:50 not a personal failure
16:40 fundamental mistake, more than personal/ individual
    18:10 systematic degrading attn
24:24 Raskin, step one: ban the current business model, identifying people’s weaknesses and hacking them
***26:40 incentives designed to maximally invade your attn, could be to maximally he’s your attention
28:35 prof Roy Bowmeister; expert in will power, author of willpower
    It’s not your fault
38:10 Nadine Burke Harris, trauma, scanning for risk and danger, hypervigilance
40:25 deep focus is great strategy when you feel safe, not when you’re feeling in danger
***41:12 “Another factor that’s been undermining attention for a long time which is financial insecurity. There’s evidence that the more financially insecure you are the more you struggle to focus. It’s a bit like the bear attack. If you’ve ever been broke, and I have, and lots of people listening have, one thing going wrong can screw you.
…You can see that we’re flipped into this mode of hypervigilance and the reason this is so important is in Finland, as you know much better than I do, they did an experiment with a universal basic income where they chose a group of people at random and gave them, I think it was $750 US dollars a month and there were many interesting results. …There was a really interesting one. I interviewed professor Olavi Kangas who did that research, was in charge of monitoring the outcomes. One thing they found was a really significant improvement in people’s ability to focus and pay attention. If you give people a baseline of security and stability they are safer and they can attend more to what’s in front of them and they’re less vigilant.
42:25 scarcity researcher, IQ 13 point difference
44:00 we sleep way less than we used to
    48:45 diet
***53:45 countries that solved addiction, Portugal from worst to best
***1:01:45 expecting to deal w this w individual changes is bs, science is strong
    1:04:00 childhood: children playing outside,
***1:05:00 Evidence clear, children who exercise and run around is to let them run around
1:06:30 kidnapping, being hit by lightning is 3x greater
    ***1:10:10 move to a 4 day workweek

Lead-based paint is still a serious problem in poor communities and neighborhoods all over the country. A friend did a study of lead poisoning in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans in the early 1990s and found astonishingly high blood lead levels in the children. The nation has never dealt with lead exposure as a nation. Each home owner, each landlord, is basically left to deal with it on their own. Poor people who own a home may not be able to afford to address the lead paint in their old home; poor people who rent may not be able to get the landlord to deal with it. And, of course, many won't even know that it is a problem.
And knowing what we now know about lead pipes in Michigan, I've wondered if the old neighborhood she was studying didn't also have lead piping still.
I never hear this issue discussed in the context of poor academic achievement. I believe that lead exposure in childhood is STILL a fundamental underlying issue that millions of poor people face and it isn't even part of our national discussion. Developing brains are harmed by exposure to lead. It remains a serious problem and it's distribution is very skewed towards the poor. They face a serious and very unfair challenge that they cannot address on their own. Alex

People who don't have kids think parents are just lousy at monitoring the kids' tech use when they don't understand the two main barriers: that the schools require kids to use devices for schoolwork; and secondly that kids aren't allowed to play outside anymore unsupervised hence a lot more time indoors.

I started watching/hearing this video about two months ago. Of course, something else came up and I completely forgot. Thank god it came back to me - after months- because I really wanted to finish it. Man, 😢this is so sad. He touched on a few points that have been my personal concerns for decades. I was a child that didn’t play outside. I was a child and adult that became hyper vigilant too early. I’m not diagnosed with adhd but I struggle with basic stuff like hygiene and proper nutrition and I’m only 33. I’ve struggled so much with clinical depression, anxiety, ptsd, bipolar, fybromyalgia. I remember being extremely sad at seeing my cousins, who are 10 and 6 years old now.. being glued to their screens, weather phone or tablet… they’d go to sleep and wake up to screen time and that would repeat itself, the screen time was part of school (pandemic., zoom classes, games, RUclips). They’re babies!!!
😢😢😢This is insane and I’m ready to join, start the revolution even if this is the last thing I do.

How can we get links to the research cited? Andrew, great efforts all around. Thank you. Johann is making verifiable statements about research done on financial insecurity and attention reduction. Unfortunately Johan's speech is rapid and the professors names are of Indian origin. This ends up with me, and perhaps others being unable to research this content further. Does your show have "show notes" (transcript, links, etc.)? To provide all this potent information without ways to follow up seems short sighted. Is there a way we the RUclips consumers could help rectify this?

Thinking deeply in the traditional sense steals your true focus. Let go of that concentration think of the word concentration to take something that is broad and big and light and compress it down into something that is small and heavy. Do not compress rise above the battlefield so you can see all enter into fish eye mode escape the frontal lobe push yourself to the back of your mind and leave the tunnel vision behind.

The way to get rid of the business models on the tech side is NOT data dividends(all that will do is challenge facebook to keep you on their platform even longer for example to claw that money back). I'm a huge fan of Andrew's but this part of his policy is ridiculous, it just seems out of character for him to know he's at odds with the EFF on tech policy and just sort of put blinders on and push the wrong policy. Get behind making interoperability legal(even adversarial), pretty much overnight someone would make a facebook client that doesn't have ads and eventually maybe you get a client that sorts and filters to get the updates you need in the least amount of time .
