I started boarding in 95 with my Dad and my older brother. My Dad saw some kids hiking the mtn and riding down and hitting a Jump and the next weekend was like hey let’s try this snowboard thing. I was hooked and even though my Wrestling coach warned us not too, cause he was afraid of me breaking a arm. I went most Sundays during my high school years. I became really good friends with other fellow boarders and started riding weekly through most of my 20s. Now I am 41 and I am the only one of that group of friends that still boards and skates. Due to my dad who was already in his late 40s when he started boarding in 95 taught me if you want to be able to do things when you are older you need to take care of yourself. You need to lift you need to stretch and you need to just stay active. My dad RIP boarded all the way in to his 60s. So anyone reading this working out lifting does not make you a jock it allows you too keep doing the things you like doing longer and to stay rad.
I feel the same way. I'm 37 and plan to ride into my 70's. My dad was still skiing with me through the toughest terrain until he passed away at 70. We would have had many good years left riding together if his heart hadnt given out. Stretch, stay in shape, and keep doing the activities you want to enjoy in your later years. The worst thing you can do is stop and become out of shape
As a skier and skateboarder I can’t speak too much on my own connection to the ‘punk-rock’ snowboarding culture of decades past. However, it’s hard to overlook the impact that the rising cost of lift tickets has had on the culture surrounding the mountains. Couple that with the growth of freestyle skiing in the past 10-20 years and you realize that the terrain park is no longer the exclusive domain of snowboarders. Either way, we all share a love for the mountains, show respect to others and good vibes will follow.
Great video, very well stated, sir. Our whole family rides (45,40,6,& 2) and the hardest part of snowboarding is holding my breath when other parents ask why I didn't start my kids on skiing first. Because they shred instead nerd, that's why!
Snowboarders are real nerds that do not know they are nerds..hence the worst type of nerd. Snowboards are a useless toy. Skis are an essential tool for life saving. Search and Rescue teams and military mountain divisions use skis. Snowboards are useless. Skis can save your life.
I rode from 92-05 and during that time snowboarding changed drastically. I went from being the hoodlum on the mountain that everybody hated to the cool guy cruising that everyone admired. I can't speak to the culture now but I was around to watch it go from a niche hobby to mainstream sport.
Remember when they made you wear a leash... or made you take off your board when getting on the lift. Talk about disrespect. One way to keep that counter-culture alive is to go snowboard in Utah... and accidentally end up on Alta from Snowbird. ^_-
Over 50 and disabled. Snowboarding is the only thing I do where most days I don’t feel disabled, and I can be better than I was before I got hurt. I took some training to learn to hit large jumps and now it’s my favorite thing. For me it’s about leaving the corporate world behind, firing up a punk rock playlist, and dropping in. For everyone else, do what you want. If I’m going to throw my fingers to the sky in rebellion, I’m sure as hell not going tell someone else, “How they should do it.”
I’m a 46 yo father of 3. I skated my whole life and was a college soccer player. My fitness has helped me stay healthy, stay in the park and go bigger than most my age. I only started snowboarding 10 years ago but suspect I’ll be doing it as long as I’m on the right side of the grass. As for the vibe vs training conversations-I’ll say this. I’ve learned from 17 yo kids that have been training in the park and I’ve had them cheer me on after putting down a great (for me) jump line. It’s all about staying positive and sharing the knowledge. #progressionnotperfection
Great story - I started riding at 43 about 7 years ago without any skiing, skating or surfing experience and got totally hooked. While I'll never be anything than another weekend rider on the mountain, and perhaps someone like me is emblematic of how mainstream snowboarding has become, I love snowboarding (especially after I started splitboarding and moved deeper into the BC) and it's always great to spread the stoke!
@@dl3988 So what if you are a "weekend rider"? Go and do your own thing, the mountain is yours as well :) I also had no experience in skiing, skateboarding or anything similar, but I started snowboarding at 30. I learned from kids, I was humble enough to let them teach me although they're half my age. I have access to a local mountain resort pretty much every day all season, so even tho this is my second season on snowboard, I already have 3 months of active riding and now I am getting better than the kids that used to teach me :D It is all about time on the board. Keep shredding!
@@BatkoBrat Absolutely! The snowboarding community is pretty incredible, and I've met people from all sorts of backgrounds at resorts and in the BC. Can't wait to get back out there again next weekend!
Snowboarders are real nerds that do not know they are nerds..hence the worst type of nerd. Snowboards are a useless toy. Skis are an essential tool for life saving. Search and Rescue teams and military mountain divisions use skis. Snowboards are useless. Skis can save your life.
That was so well thought out and presented. The Middle Path. Thank you from a 44 year old snowboarder up before dawn to wax my board so I can spend the day practicing switch and halfcabs on a coooold day with no new snow. It is the quality of soul in skate/surf/board culture that motivates me. I cant imagine what else would make me bust my ass all winter and all of that intense yoga, intervals, balance, and activity will help me live longer and better. Whatever I have put into snowboarding since 1990 has come back many times over.
Snowboarders are real nerds that do not know they are nerds..hence the worst type of nerd. Snowboards are a useless toy. Skis are an essential tool for life saving. Search and Rescue teams and military mountain divisions use skis. Snowboards are useless. Skis can save your life.
@@chuckruffing6283 there is no need to be so rude, but i'll give it to you, snowboarding isn't very useful other than having fun. with no poles it makes it way harder to go across flats or hike up. but snowboarding is for fun and this guy isn't talking about how useful skiing is. no need to be so negative towards snowboarding or this one guy
Great message. I basically edge slipped for 2 - 3 years then bedrudgingly went to a group coaching session running drills and routines but always interspersed with silly challenges and games to keep it fun. After these coaching sessions my boarding improved dramatically. All the silly games taught more skills than i could have imagined, and the message of the group was to always have fun. Great video. Thanks
Im a new snowboarder, still learning but loving it so far. I came over from skiing because I got bored from it, didnt like carrying the poles and skiing was chosen for me when i was a kid. I always knew snowboarding had this sort of grunge vibe to it just like skateboarding but i just cant get behind people that gatekeep the shit out of these, especially in skateboarding. People need to realize that these sports are not new anymore. With winter sports being so much popular it adds to more newcomers. On the other hand i appreciate a lot on snowboarding the fact that it seems to have less of a sporty style and more of a you're a person look.
Everyone is different. Everyone gets their kicks in different ways. If you get yours soul shredding, you do you. If you get yours spending days focusing on nothing but nose rolls, you do you! The only negative is judging what someone else gets their happy from, cos no-one owns the slopes, and we've all paid the same to be there
"Discipline will set you free." I love that. I train and love kickboxing for the same reasons I love snowboarding, and I'm going to keep this quote in mind. Thank you. Doing your cardio and strength training allows you to lap more runs and survive harder slams.
I am a snowboarder but started skiing this year. I have again a big grin on my face. Not that I didn't had one when snowboarding, but it started to be serious. On ski's I'm out of my comfort zone and that makes it funny again without the need to push myself to hard. Now I have more options to have fun. My wife her way of fun is slow and elegant. My way of fun is the contrary. To each his own. Gatekeepers gonna gatekeep. The same in skateboarding. Funny thing is that my skateboard sees a skatepark from time to time but the gatekeepers from back in the day just stoped and are keeping gates in other parts of life. Live your life, and live and let live. Peace!
If you need to push yourself to hard on snowbard means you have wrong technique. So you do not use the energy from gravity and centrifugal forces, but use the muscles. This is mistake. You need to do unloading and horizontal work on the snowboard using the turning power. Take a good instructor for a couple of days. Ask to learn carving and skidded turns again, watch RyanKnapton channel. Most likely you are crouching hard and sweeping with your back foot to turn. A lot of people quit snowboarding because they didn't learn how to do it right and the muscles get tired quickly due to mistakes.
Dude, insightful video! I used to be a pretty decent skier. Got MS. Stopped skiing. Forced myself to learn snowboarding. Became a splitboarder and it let's me experience mountains again, but in a new way. This then turns into training motivation for the rest of the year. Since staying functional and fit should make snowboarding easier (much like preseason training made skiing more enjoyable in the past). How-to-snowboard-videos started showing up on my youtube feed but they did not resonate with me until this one! Much like you the counter culture is what drew me to my past life. I viewed (view?) ski/snowboard school with a bit of resentment. But all my friends are skiers and training in snowboarding could lead to the riding more enjoyable. It could also make the crap days on snow feel more inspiring. Thank you!
Love this, thank you. I skate boardered in my teenage age years and skied always wanted to board, started snowboarding at 40 and will never go back, 43 now and love it.
Awesome! Where ya going? My wife is from there so I go a lot to Villars, Les Diablerets, Gryon, Verbiers and Zermatt. You’ll have a blast, good food, usually good snow 😊
@@cvictori awesome! I'm going to Adelboden, we have a very old family house there, i'm from the Netherlands myself! Adelboden is not that well known i think but there's a couple of great piste's out there!
I definitely regret not "training" more when I was in my youth so that I could have become a more capable rider, both physically and mentally. It would have helped me relax and be excited to progress instead of stressing about trying bigger tricks and stuff, which started to ruin the fun of it so I kind of gave up. Now at 36 I feel like I'm playing catch up and the physical training is an absolute must at my age if I want to go for tricks without hurting myself. It definitely doesn't help that I haven't been able to ride consistently in the last 5-10 years. I have no problem with snowboarding being less of a grungy counter-culture thing and being regarded as more of a sport. Snowboarding has so much fun to offer and having enough physical strength and a good riding technique really helps you get the most out of your time doing it.
First , so happy to call Mt. Baker, WA my home mountain the culture here is so inviting and unique and kinda still pretty punk rock, at least compared to other resorts. Second, as an athlete (Mma) and a snowboarder since 1999/2000, training is absolutely a part of snowboarding for me. Definitely off mountain to stay capable on the mountain (flexible, strong, good endurance) . But on the mountain too, maybe not so much for me as an in person coach for me, cool if that’s your thing though, but definitely in the way of friends who push you to expand your riding and will answer questions like “hey, how the hell did you land that?” You just have to be humble enough to ask and get outside of your comfort zone. Progressing together is what the sport is all about.
31 years old and skateboarded from like 5 years old till early 20s and still longboard today. I just picked up snowboarding and I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm glad I picked it up now. I feel the community similar to the way I did in the skate community. It's awesome wish I picked it up earlier.
Very good philosophy. Great thoughts and humbling. I started at 18 and still riding at 51. Did it because it looked amazing and it WAS rebellious. It was also the alternative to surfing for us in the mountainous regions. In the early days when places started to let snowboarders up the lifts, the hate for us was real, I got spit on and yelled at, threatened…but more skiers were curious than angry and it felt cool to be a representative. Like surfing, there’s two very different camps; soul surfer and competitor. There’s room for both rebel and jock in snowboarding, too. The activity became too big for a single, close tribe and human nature ends up in competition so it was inevitable. I use snowboarding to get in touch with my confidence and as a way to meditate, to truly be in the moment. There’s a stoke factor and the inclination to progress. So many positives that it’s hard to deny anyone, no matter why they want to shred, the lifetime adventure that is snowboarding.
Well said Ed! I just started seriously about 5-6 years ago and taking lessons helped me get better. I try my best to learn new skills, practice older techniques and enjoy the experience. Sport belongs to everyone and no one. Find the level you want to be at and put in the effort to get there, stay there, or get better. It’s always your choice. But never belittle the new people or hold I too high esteem the best. And above all, be a kind and gentle human. Great vid
Loved this video! Very well done and so many good takeaways! I think the culture is in good shape with all the positive snowboard youtube channels. Everyone spreading the love and stoke through ride videos and instructional videos!
Great video. I started ‘97. Punk rock and skate culture. At 41 now still punk rock but business man and body building/weight lifting as my core discipline. Snowboarding now is way more fun as performance is higher physically
So cool. Been riding since 95. I’m 51 now. Still pushing myself on steeps, trees, 180’s, 3’s in the right situation. Just go out and have fun. Push yourself. Challenge yourself. Thx for the vid dude.
@4:55 literally the freedom of it is the best part I’ve gone on now 7 trips and oh wow ive never felt more alive even when i ride a dirtbike at 70 i dont feel the freedom of the slopes… also just got the new gnu 2023 headspace so pumpeddd!!!😊😊❤🎉 great video btw new sub here 🎉🎉🎉
Loaned my powder board out last week.. Yesterday went i got to the lift with that deck it had the bindings in regular.. Not wanting to hold or lose the crew i said I'll do the day backwards. I was humbled the first two runs.. By end of day i had new butters and the shreddertainmemt we bring to hill had a comical day of rads. First time in 20 years going backwards. I ride switch daily all season. Good video. 🧡🤜🏻🤛🏻
Riding 30 years and at 39 I still subscribe to the counter culture on the hill. I still love watching the Totally Board videos with the old school tricks with guys like Daniel Frank, Terje, Shin Campos, Dave Basterrechea..etc
On ski you also can "rotate" like a kid. Skis are price of wood too. All you said is available for skis, but ski is less fun for me. Many people dont choose to snowboard because they are afraid. Snowboarding is not intuitive and difficult to control. It is not suitable for relaxed riding. Skiing is more for pampered people and pensioners.
I don't drink just to stay in shape, never any problems, just can't ride at my age and also party at all. However the "art" is in the ride not the "image" for me. I think lessons are great and I haven't taken any yet but agree largely with your video... 🎉❤
I saw similar scenes in Oregon on Bachelor and Meadows. Personally, I think because of COVID that many of the competitions were postponed, so parents are too eager to put their kids back into competing like freaking Pokemons. Skiing and snowboarding should be FUN, but I saw too many crying and hollering these past weekends. Chill out, relax, let your kids love the sport on their own pace. Shoving it down their throats only make them despite the sports, and you.
I think it's like any other skater/boarder/punkrock scene it matured into what it is now and with anything else, there is the individuals that feel the need to measure their skills against others. For these boarders there is competitions such as Olympics! And then there is the ones that don't want to measure and want to be free, NO RULES. I just want to rip with my son, he does park and I myself (44) ride along and film him and be a proud dad and expose him to what drew me to this, and he is loving it. I have had experiences on the slopes good and bad with Snowboarders from all walks of life. I teach my son to be cool and accepting of everyone in life, not just on the slopes but everywhere in life! Thanks for this great conversation topic Ed!!! Keep on Shredding!!
To each their own.. there is nothing inherently wrong with taking a sport seriously. Being rude to each other is the only thing we need to avoid other than following the code.
Idk I was just at Keystone and had some awesome conversations with some fellow shredders on the gondola. The stoke is still alive. However, I will say there are less and less mountains these days where you feel okay to let loose. At Breckenridge there were Jerry's everywhere and I was constantly looking around me instead of looking into my riding.
This reminds me of the Nyjah Houston argument with skateboarding. People hate him because he treats his body like a professional athlete and lives in a mansion. However, the dude still rips. As a fitness guy myself, I LOVE bringing training and formal stuff into snowboarding.
For sure. Sometimes I am jealous of what kids have to shred on these days but when I truly think about it I wouldn’t trade our tomb stoned halfpipes and our weird looking table tops. And ofcourse the rockstar life style and the way we all felt like we were part of a special club🤙great times
Lol I've been riding since the 90s and have my kids in it. Last weekend my boy was racing (boardercross) against kids from Copper's summit team. It can all be a bit much but he enjoys the competition. He also enjoys freeriding and finding dope tree runs, side hits, and job lines in the park. That's what we'll do this weekend. Both are valuable.
From just teaching friends to being employed as an instructor, I've always said, "Don't sweat it. If you're having fun, then you're doing it right." (Rider since Jan 1990.)
We need to do better to our fellow shredders on the mountain. Encouraging words can be the little push that someone needs to land that trick that they were practicing for the past week. I’ve seen this first hand in encouraging my son to play outside of his comfort zone. Be kind to one another out there. Stop calling people out from the lift because they ate sh1t. One day you might just piss off the wrong person while they wait for you to enter the park. Just saying. 🤷🏻♂️🤘🏼
38 father of 4. Got 3 kids up on the hill, and next season going to try and get my youngest on a board, he’ll be 1 1/2… I’ve seen enough people to it that it looks possible. I just spent a week at the hills, and my 8 year old son was my mountain buddy all week. He helped close the hill one night, and we opened the next morning.
I’m 45, been shredden da nar since i wuz 15. Just went on a boyz trip to Mt Hood in still hang w da park boyz…. Stretchen, joggen n herb is a good combo to being a big kid. Headen to Jackson Hole next week and stoke count is still super high
52 and skated hard as a kid and snowboarded for over 20 years to this day. My two teenage kids are skiers. this dad joined them last year. I am moving away from the darkside after all these years. I will still continue to splitboard, but my resort days will move into skiing. Its not as jarring as snowboarding, and who doesnt love pizza and french fries. I will keep my boards and still break one out from time to time.
My interpretation of this vid: We may have out differences as snowboarders, but thats ok. Because at the end of the day, we can unite around our common dislike of skiers lol
Bro maybe it's just a out west thing but us out here in the Midwest where 200' is a hill and 400' is a mountain its still pretty much the same yeah its gotten commercial and yeah there's daytrippers and weekend warriors but I'm a newly married new father and full time construction worker so my time on the hill is like my sacred escape from the mundanity of life. I like to cruise the corduroy but what really gets me lit is chasing a powder day and smashing little hidden sidehits and trying to push my luck with the ropes and passthrus. I rode a beginner park at this hill called Little Switzerland and these kids riding the park in there are absolutely ripping it dude. I felt like a old dude in there and I'm only 27 but nothing has me more stoked than stoking these kids up and helping out if someone is hurt and needs someone responsible to take charge. The true spirit of snowboarding will always be with Tom sims and jake Burton arguing about who invented it, and the kids who could just barely afford their gear hiking uphill to ride one run stoked out of their minds. Guys like me that pile 4 of them into a beat up chevy to chase a snowstorm up a mountain pass in hopes of some fresh pow, sleeping in cars, living out of board bags, smoking weed on the chairs, spending their last hundred bucks to ride big hills. It's not the people who belong on the hill in their vale-esque courchevel status Columbia jackets and brand new gear every year. It's the guys who ride 10 year old thrift store rigs and stay stoked, the people who never would belong on a ski slope, but who broke in because of the hard work put in by those before us.
So true. I am a 49yr old parent and will admit, my generation ruined it when we became parents. It was rare to have personal coaches at anything, now its in every sport these kids do.
Gosh I needed to hear this! I was finally able to afford my first snowboard setup after a lifetime of wishing and envying (Im 28 lolol). Only to further be discouraged about the insane price of jackets and pants, and them virtually not existing for a 6'2 250 pound rider. But Im gonna take the approach I did with skating in my childhood, teens, and early adulthood; fuck it, wear what I want, feel comfortable in, so long as I look rad and have fun. My goal is to incorporate what I know from vert surfskate and hope that it translates into something cool going down a mountain slope
Also, stores often have deals towards the end of the season. I got my pants and coat from the shop in my town in the clearance section and have had them for years. Hoping I can have them for another year or two. Got some grease stain on my pants this year but they still work! My daily driver I have was probably $450 at the time, but I’ve had it since 2013, so it can pay off if you save for it. I don’t really ride park, but I push myself and ride when I can, and my board is still in great condition. Again, you can find things on sale end of season, but selection might just be limited. You could also try ski swaps too. When starting out, I got equipment there. I can’t stress enough having the right equipment though (correct size boots, bindings, etc). I just bought what was available and cheap when starting out. I feel I didn’t progress enough because my boots didn’t fit right and my board wasn’t right for me. Nothing wrong with discounted or used, just make sure it works for you! I hope you figure it out and have fun!
Practicing off season and at the bottom of the mountain before hand is so overlooked. If you want to do a trick, first imagine yourself landing it,then practice the motion off your board. Then practice it strapped in. Whether it's at the bottom of the mountain or whether it's on grass. That motion and muscle memory goes a very long way. I have such good board control compared to my friends because I believe in working off the mountain. Snowboarding is all legs, agility, creativity and balance. You should be doing squats and have a strong core. Even do carving will you're just standing there strapped in,really focus on balance and being solid in the legs.
as someone who is a youth that occasionally rides competitively i would say that goals are what drive people. The easiest way to do that is national rankings when it comes to competitions, and that seems okay. The issue with that though is what i would say is a trifecta of things; that parents want success (think of dance moms and such.), kids just follow the goal, and the coaches just feed in. it’s unfortunate that this chase has begun to kill snowboarding culture.
i just watched everybody else on the mountain how to do it, and eventually just got it. few tomahawks here and there, times thinking i wish someone wouldve told me this and that, couldve saved tons of pain and suffering. but all in all i ended up at a very good place, shredding the mountain feel like no bodys business. and rock and roll. would not change a thing
Being "countercultural" is only cool if the culture one is rebelling against is flawed in some way. That's why snowboarding was both cool and countercultural at first, because it rebelled against the preppy, arrogant, "skiers only" mentality of most resorts. Now that both are accepted, encouraged and respected, being "countercultural" usually just translates to being a selfish a--hole, practiced by those who are asked to follow a rule that has some logic to it (not bombing a beginner run, for example, or being asked to not smoke in line, esp with kids in it). A lot of people think they're being cool/countercultural when they're just being pricks, imo.
To me snowboarding is me making up my own type of fun and creativity and art and if someone judges my riding I could care less I’ve been boarding for 3 years mostly self taught and I cringe when I see couches teaching kids at the park taking up the whole feature
Ngl, I only just started skiing but I specifically chose skiing because I felt like everyone snowboards and I wanted to be different haha Also because I would be horrible at it but that's an irrelevant detail.
Meh, maybe out west, but growing up in VT snowboarding in the 90s, and still riding, not a whole lot has changed. We’re all stoked on powder days (few and far between these days). My kids ski but I’m perfectly happy on my shred stick. I ride rockers for effortless endless butters. My time of park riding is long gone, but I can lay down some deep carves and ground tricks with the best of em.
The only difference between “back in the day” and now is that just riding a plank instead of two doesn’t make you special. What you do with it can make you special. Just like with skiing, where you can be super boring and basic (yet still enjoy it, which is what counts), or you can be a super stylish newschooler..
You can get a season pass to about 50 different resorts around the world for under 1,000. Cheapest they’ve ever been that way I agree, day passes are absurd
I love snowboarding it makes me feel like I’m 11 again I started snowboarding when I was 10 ,I’m 23 now my favorite trick is the Ollie and I got a powerful one too I love taking week days off to go shred and walk on to the lifts on a black 💎 ,I love to pop in my ear buds and listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd free bird ,i wakeboard in the summer as well but snowboarding is a way better sport I live in a state where we only get 3 months of snowboarding and it’s sad 😔 I want to have longer winters and enjoy this magnificent sport I’m tired of living in va I wish i had the money to get out of here and go live in a place like Colorado or Utah 😢 ,with snowboarding u have a lot of freedom and I love to be free
I took up boarding at 54 when my son was 14 and took it up. Hard as hell for the first few years but by 4 years in I was doing heli's with CPG in AK where I lived then. I did have the time on the mountain and was able to learn fairly fast for an old guy. Also had the advantage of living near a great mountain with top grade terrain, Mt Alyeska in Girdwood, AK. Very wise words from your dad. RIP
I met a gentleman on a lift ride that was celebrating his 65th bday skiing. He had picked it up at 30. He ripped too.
As a skier and skateboarder I can’t speak too much on my own connection to the ‘punk-rock’ snowboarding culture of decades past. However, it’s hard to overlook the impact that the rising cost of lift tickets has had on the culture surrounding the mountains. If you get a season pass and ride more than one resort tickets are actually cheaper than they’ve ever been
I think my favorite line in any snowboard video: “people don’t care what part of the board you press, but they care if your a good person or not. “
Great video, very well stated, sir. Our whole family rides (45,40,6,& 2) and the hardest part of snowboarding is holding my breath when other parents ask why I didn't start my kids on skiing first. Because they shred instead nerd, that's why!
👊
People really ask you that question? That’s absurd.
and whats wrong about skiing? Because your answer sounds same stupid like question
It's easier to teach a three year old how to snowboard than it is to ski. The biomechanics are simpler and require far less muscle precision.
Snowboarders are real nerds that do not know they are nerds..hence the worst type of nerd. Snowboards are a useless toy. Skis are an essential tool for life saving. Search and Rescue teams and military mountain divisions use skis. Snowboards are useless. Skis can save your life.

Definitely changed a lot in that time
Remember when they made you wear a leash... or made you take off your board when getting on the lift.
Hell yeah! Where's your local? I just love going out at 39 and just throwing down turns with some friends.
@@dl3988
So what if you are a "weekend rider"? Go and do your own thing, the mountain is yours as well :)
I also had no experience in skiing, skateboarding or anything similar, but I started snowboarding at 30. I learned from kids, I was humble enough to let them teach me although they're half my age.
I have access to a local mountain resort pretty much every day all season, so even tho this is my second season on snowboard, I already have 3 months of active riding and now I am getting better than the kids that used to teach me :D
It is all about time on the board.
Keep shredding!
Key word: sharing
This is the way 🏂
Best comment. 💞
OMG, this is very deep. I am not only learning how to become a better snowboarder but also learning how to be a better person. Love your content!

Thanks
This whole video is a vibe! Thanks Ed 🌿
On the other hand i appreciate a lot on snowboarding the fact that it seems to have less of a sporty style and more of a you're a person look.
nothing like working on switch riding and having kids in the lift cheering me up like it is my first day on the hills.
I just bought my first snowboard today! Got shoes, a helmet and goggles! In march i'm going to switzerland to try it for the first tine, i'm hyped!!!!
Awesome! Where ya going? My wife is from there so I go a lot to Villars, Les Diablerets, Gryon, Verbiers and Zermatt. You’ll have a blast, good food, usually good snow 😊

Love to hear it
Very good philosophy.
Vid is right on time 🙏🏼Flying out to CO for Breck, Vail, KeyStone and Copper tomorrow. Epic Pass FTW. Thanks for the pep talk coach 🏂
Enjoy, it's been an incredible snow season out here. Vail has been really nice and not crowded. Breck is busy AF.
How was Breck? Flying out there in 2 weeks. Live on the east coast and have only ever ridden fake snow. Super pumped!
@@boidson17 Expect it to be quite busy but you will definitely have an amazing time. We're having a terrific snow season!
Powerful words. Made me tear up a little. 🥺 Much love. 💓💓
Love to hear it 🙌
@4:55 literally the freedom of it is the best part I’ve gone on now 7 trips and oh wow ive never felt more alive even when i ride a dirtbike at 70 i dont feel the freedom of the slopes… also just got the new gnu 2023 headspace so pumpeddd!!!😊😊❤🎉 great video btw new sub here 🎉🎉🎉
Loaned my powder board out last week..
👊
On ski you also can "rotate" like a kid. Skis are price of wood too. All you said is available for skis, but ski is less fun for me. Many people dont choose to snowboard because they are afraid. Snowboarding is not intuitive and difficult to control. It is not suitable for relaxed riding. Skiing is more for pampered people and pensioners.
I don't drink just to stay in shape, never any problems, just can't ride at my age and also party at all. However the "art" is in the ride not the "image" for me. I think lessons are great and I haven't taken any yet but agree largely with your video... 🎉❤
0:41 it is truly becoming like that also here in Italy
I saw similar scenes in Oregon on Bachelor and Meadows. Personally, I think because of COVID that many of the competitions were postponed, so parents are too eager to put their kids back into competing like freaking Pokemons. Skiing and snowboarding should be FUN, but I saw too many crying and hollering these past weekends. Chill out, relax, let your kids love the sport on their own pace. Shoving it down their throats only make them despite the sports, and you.
Good advice boarding is a ladder with plateaus and sharp escalations but mastery of it takes discipline and patience.
Wow what a good psa and reminder to be kind on the hill. You came off very well
🙏
Amazing video... I wrote an article about the same few years ago. This video should be the first lesson for every new snowboarder.
Cool, would love to see the article
To each their own.. there is nothing inherently wrong with taking a sport seriously. Being rude to each other is the only thing we need to avoid other than following the code.
hey man, look forward to your uploads. Best snowboard channel on youtube imo.
Beautiful man! Dig it!
That’s why I subbed. Such an inspiring video!

Me talking to buddies.... when you find your edge.... man.... you're gonna get addicted......
This reminds me of the Nyjah Houston argument with skateboarding. People hate him because he treats his body like a professional athlete and lives in a mansion. However, the dude still rips. As a fitness guy myself, I LOVE bringing training and formal stuff into snowboarding.
Yup, and you will still be boarding when you're 70.
@@MG-sg2ci definitely makes the body feel better.
For sure. Sometimes I am jealous of what kids have to shred on these days but when I truly think about it I wouldn’t trade our tomb stoned halfpipes and our weird looking table tops. And ofcourse the rockstar life style and the way we all felt like we were part of a special club🤙great times
Working out, makes you younger and stronger
its coming back better than ever, watch
Lol I've been riding since the 90s and have my kids in it. Last weekend my boy was racing (boardercross) against kids from Copper's summit team.
It can all be a bit much but he enjoys the competition. He also enjoys freeriding and finding dope tree runs, side hits, and job lines in the park. That's what we'll do this weekend. Both are valuable.
Good stuff!
imo, the only thing you should ever say when you're on the lift and you see someone fall is, "Are you ok?".
So cool!
I’m 45, been shredden da nar since i wuz 15. Just went on a boyz trip to Mt Hood in still hang w da park boyz…. Stretchen, joggen n herb is a good combo to being a big kid. Headen to Jackson Hole next week and stoke count is still super high
I'm here to keep that punk rock don't give a fuck alive 🤘🏽🤙🏽
Been on board since 92. Not going anywhere... Fast😅
So true! Great vid
How can you be surprised?
Whats that line in the old Powell video where Stacy says? "we need hats and jerseys, make it like little league!"
Snowboarding is, and will always be, whatever you want to it to be
52 and skated hard as a kid and snowboarded for over 20 years to this day.
This guy gets it😂
love your train of thoughts
Nice take on the matter Shredder
I have come to the conclusion of almost 40 years on the snow is that everyone is out there for different reasons.
idk man i just love your flatground tricks and butters
i ski though too but the more sports the better
It's the guys who ride 10 year old thrift store rigs and stay stoked, the people who never would belong on a ski slope, but who broke in because of the hard work put in by those before us.
most of us never had parents who snowboarded before, now the new generation does
This is true
Checkout thrift stores and garage sales, you should be able to find some good stuff!
SNOWBOARDING MAKES ME HAPPY!
Pain was my coach. Worked out well for me. 30 years riding and still thrashing the mountains.
We always kept each other in check and called out whack 💩 but it was mutual respect and a brotherhood of sorts. 🙏 For the video
as someone who is a youth that occasionally rides competitively i would say that goals are what drive people.
The Culture will always be... however, not all people that Snowboard, are Snowboarders... Terje knows best 🤙
come to Chile to ride the andes, we dont have a "industry" here, but the best mountains, you gonna feel like the 90s
I was there in August, loved it!
Chili looks fantastico
i just watched everybody else on the mountain how to do it, and eventually just got it. few tomahawks here and there, times thinking i wish someone wouldve told me this and that, couldve saved tons of pain and suffering. but all in all i ended up at a very good place, shredding the mountain feel like no bodys business. and rock and roll. would not change a thing

All the cool kids these days are skiing, makes me feel a little old, but happy that snowboarding has gone back in the direction from which it came!
Its like skateboarding schools but you can tell the kids who gave blood sweat and tears to learn versus who had the foam pads for their bailed tricks.
To me snowboarding is me making up my own type of fun and creativity and art and if someone judges my riding I could care less I’ve been boarding for 3 years mostly self taught and I cringe when I see couches teaching kids at the park taking up the whole feature
This was absolutely amazing! Great perspective! Btown wassup

Ngl, I only just started skiing but I specifically chose skiing because I felt like everyone snowboards and I wanted to be different haha
Also because I would be horrible at it but that's an irrelevant detail.
Punk rock and snowboarding fuck everything else Freeride is bringing back core snowboarding
The only difference between “back in the day” and now is that just riding a plank instead of two doesn’t make you special. What you do with it can make you special. Just like with skiing, where you can be super boring and basic (yet still enjoy it, which is what counts), or you can be a super stylish newschooler..
This is how I feel like breakdancing is going through, now that it's an Olympic sport.
Steamboat ‘91-‘94, seemed like a total golden age

I did have the time on the mountain and was able to learn fairly fast for an old guy. Also had the advantage of living near a great mountain with top grade terrain, Mt Alyeska in Girdwood, AK.
