- The first version of this video made quite a splash after Oppenheimer released, due to the size of the bomb. I gave the upscale another go, this time with Topaz AI. For the most part, it looks sharper and better in many parts (the faces especially), while looking a bit worse in others (some landscapes and text.) I hope you all enjoy! For those wondering, I used the IRIS V2 model and added grain after to look more like film since the original source smoothed out the grain with low bit rate. Upscaling can only do so much when the source footage is so low in resolution.

I saw that the original video was released at 480p and 25 fps and that just couldn't do it justice, so I upscaled the video to 4k and used optical flow to make the framerate a smooth 60fps. I hope you enjoy.
Watch and draw your own conclusions. Since this was created during the Soviet Union, it is probably propaganda to show its might but the footage of the explosion is real.

The other version is better but the landscape shots not as good. Guess it's hard to get the balance right. Still impressed with both versions
Yeah when it comes to things like far away faces or any text, it starts losing its edge. The closer up faces in this one are far better but the far faces get garbled and the text turns into squares which I find hilarious.
Seems like the major things to solve with AI upscaling for now.
@@SunsetFilmAlliance True but considering this documentary is over 40yrs ago one can't have to many complaints of bringing old footage to life with modern tech.
Watching this closely didn't realise the amount of images taken from mounted cameras to document each stage of assembly process
@@rroberts2023 absolutely. I wish that the original negative wasn't lost so we could have a truly high quality scan rather than going off a 480p low quality copy.

Recently viewed another RUclips video where it was shown on Google maps where this bomb was detonated, the blast radius and how far the pilot managed to travel away from the bomb being dropped 21miles out. The explosion caused his bomber plane to nose dive slightly but he recovered.
No doubt if the Russian scientists had developed a 100megaton instead of 50, the pilot definitely wouldn't have time to get away from the blast
Could you upscale the RDS-37 test?
topaz isnt very good for upscaling its kinda hot garbage and its disgusting that they have the audiacity to charge $300 for a license that only carries a year in updates. Topaz is one of those early AI companies that much like early GPU manufacturers Topaz will be forgotten to time. Decent chance in a decade people will laugh at the fact people paid money for topaz's awful upscaling.
It’s great for high quality (1080p+) camera footage but for low quality RUclips videos and old VHS footage per se, I agree. They really need to improve their upscaling for low quality content.

All audio is original from the bad quality scan that the Russian MOD had on their channel before scrubbing it from RUclips after the start of the Ukraine war.
