I was at Blues Ect and all over Halstead and Roses was always the biggest treat on Saturday night seeing Melvin Taylor!! So Amazing! I still remember the first time and I was blown away ! I always wondered why he seemed to stay so LOCAL !! No complaints though!!
I first saw Melvin Taylor in Mishawka, Indian, east of South Bend back in 1988 at the Center Street Blues Cafe 4 times in 4 months. He would play on a Friday and Saturday. I drove the 40 miles from Michigan to see him. The guy is phenomenal. I invited a few guitarists I knew in the area to see him and they would crouch or sit in a chair closest to the stage to watch his fingers bend those strings. Even when he broke a string and he did that twice in those 4 shows, he never missed a beat. He had a bass player and a drummer at that time. I got to know all of them during the breaks. The drummer 's day job was working at a steel mill in Northern Indiana, outside of Chicago. I asked Melvin on many occasions has I saw him play at Rosa's Lounge in Chicago of who taught him to play as he did. He only replied that it was his uncle. We could never find out who that was. I did get 3 broken guitar strings from him of the dozen or more times I saw him play mostly in Chicago. I used to send him postcards from when I worked in Asia, especially one for his birthday which is close to mine in mid March. When Melvin came to play Voodoo Chile, he sounded so close to Jimi Hendrix,. His sound was clean and crisp. He said he had to play harder as he had no rhythm guitarist. If you get a chanced to see Melvin Taylor, go for it. Even Ronnie Earl has told me that his sound is unique. And I have seen Earl at least 8 times. Only Anson Funderburgh with Sam Myers and also Rod piazza have I seen more. About 15 times each.

I used to go see Mel Taylor at Rosa's from somewhere in the 98-03 era. We had to pick up our jaws from the floor. He is dynamite with a guitar.
