  • Why are some people aging in place successfully, while others struggle to stay in their homes in their 70s and 80s? Is it possible to develop a strategy for your own life that increases your chances of successfully aging in place? These are two of the many questions that I asked my guests on this edition of the Sixty and Me show.
Join Anthony Cirillo, Brian Harvey and me as we discuss 3 critical issues to consider when aging in place. Not only will this help you to protect your loved ones, but, it may help you to develop your own plan... even if it doesn't feel like you will need one for several years.
Do you have any elderly relatives or friends who are struggling to age in place? What did you learn from their situations? Let's have a chat!
Here is how to get in touch with my two guests today:

We just had to remodel from a fridge water line leak followed by a piercing of the sewer pipe and the raw sewage took out my entire kitchen (neither is a fault of my own nor could I have prevented.) The repairs/remodel (paid for by property insurance) took over 9 months and costs over $100,000 to do. What elderly person on SS and even a small pension can pay for that? This is probably how much and "aging in place remodel" would costs. I am age 72, my husband is age 77 and we downsized from a rural home with a 5-acre property to a 1,258 sq. ft. condo to eliminate the 24/7 lawn mowing, leaf pick up, gardening, snow blowing etc.Even then, our kitchen counters are too high for a wheelchair, our door handles are wrong, our shower thresh hold is too high to be a zero entry.....We do live in a town that offers a great senior center and has a MAX bus for the aging and handicap which is a real plus and we already have a hospital type bed but still it takes time and energy to live through a major remodel. Honestly, i HOPE i NEVER HAVE TO REMODEL AGAIN.

This is a valuable series Margaret. We all need to ensure that we are making decisions about housing and location that will serve us as we age in place.

Thank you for such an interesting video. I will be 70 in just a few months and have some medical issues. My husband is healthy, thank God for that. But I have been thinking about what would happen to me if he were to become disabled himself or horrible thought, should pass away. This gives much needed information for people at our age and health.

I wish I could live in a nice community that only has seniors and private little granny pods.

So many prefer to live in fantasy land, as they delude themselves.
