Another good way to start a small grid vehicle is to use either a large grid connector, hinge, or rotor. With a connector facing up you can drop a small grid connector on top of it, and you can lock it in place and build off the new connector. With a hinge or rotor you can remove the end part and replace with a small grid head and build off from that. The benefit being that your small grid that you're building can now charge off your large grid.

With the many many red dots all around you I might have tunneled into the mountain next to your frozen lake to make a more defensible base. I believe what you found with the neutral signal was a crashed ship, part of one of the Vanilla Planet mods you are using. Might think about an ore detector for the Bug if you are going to keep it around for long.
I belive you are right regarding the base, a mountain stronghold would serve me better. i have been a bit too busy lately so hence the huge delays in the videos, but i hope to improve on that
