- Episode 43. Velocity and Time: Einstein is motivated to perfect the central ideas of physics, resulting in a new understanding of the meaning of space and time.
“The Mechanical Universe,” is a critically-acclaimed series of 52 thirty-minute videos covering the basic topics of an introductory university physics course.
Each program in the series opens and closes with Caltech Professor David Goodstein providing philosophical, historical and often humorous insight into the subject at hand while lecturing to his freshman physics class. The series contains hundreds of computer animation segments, created by Dr. James F. Blinn, as the primary tool of instruction. Dynamic location footage and historical re-creations are also used to stress the fact that science is a human endeavor.
The series was originally produced as a broadcast telecourse in 1985 by Caltech and Intelecom, Inc. with program funding from the Annenberg/CPB Project.

About the part at the beginning of the video, different explanations for when the magnet is moving and when the coil is moving, the scientists in the those days didn't realize the third possibility, that they were both moving toward each other at equal velocities. I wonder what their explanation would have been for that.
Energy would increase by some factor, like the combined movement. Both moving objects would increase in mass in relationship to the observer. Same results.

The simple way I visualize time dilation is for the traveler to drop a ball. The traveler's clock would measure the ball going straight down. The observer would see the path of the ball moving down and sideways, thus having a hypotenuse and a longer time. Thought experiments work better for me than trying to understand the math. I think nuclear clocks have orbited earth and returned to be compared to earth clocks to prove time dilation. Each clock in different motion.
They weren't 'nuclear' clocks, IIRC they were Hewlett Packard 5060A atomic clocks which are based on cesium. They flew them around the world in aircraft in the 50's to confirm Einstein's theory. A more contemporary example is the atomic clocks in GPS satellites which have to be corrected to account for the relativistic effects due to both their high rate of speed which makes them tick slower, and also the weaker gravity they experience due to their height above the earth which makes them tick faster. I believe the gravity affects them more than the speed, but I don't remember for certain.
Only problem with your idea is that objects hit the ground at the same time whether dropped straight down or launched straight sideways. That's been an established fact since the time of Galileo and a good reason to realize that Einstein's moving light clock thought experiment is dead wrong. That and the fact that photons can't be pushed sideways so there's no way they could possibly take a diagonal path. The whole thing is complete fantasy.

We can simply change the frame of reference and say that the spaceship was stationary and planet earth distanced from it in high speeds and then turned around and got back, can't we?
EDIT! I found my answer, it's funny how easy are these things to forget, the reasoning behind it is that the twin situations is not symmetrical, the one in the spaceship changed direction but the one on earth never experienced such thing
Continuos change of frame reference. One twin experienced acceleration, the other didn´t. The one on the spaceship experienced acceleration on take off, deceleration-acceleration on the return curve, and then deceleration again when about landing.
it does not have nothing to do that the twin on the spaceship changes direction and the other not.. the explanation as explained it’s that if you see your twin who is leaving on a ship you see the ship ONLY! Contracted,,, now from your point of you you don’t just see your twin contracted but the entire space is moving compared to you and then the entire space is contracted…the lenght contraction of the spaceship doesn’t change anything. The spaceship still have a long journey, but the guy inside the spaceship doesnt have to go that far because the whole space is contracted…so with the same clock it seems logical that the guy on the space ship. Experience less time because the event to leave,,,arrive somewhere and come back takes less time again since space is contracted…this is the explanation..forget the rest..
At 6:30, in Henry's reference frame, why is the light circle staying still, like Henry's train does? Shouldn't the light move to the left away from Henry, along with everything else (Albert, green ground, etc.)?
The light sphere in Henry's frame of reference originates from the center of his train and from that point it expands in ALL directions with velocity equal to c. To Henry it looks like the world is moving backwards relative to his still train but light speed is the same in all directions and in all frames of reference, hence is moves backwards and forwards at the same rate. That's why the light circle always looks still
Where is it location of the light as it turns on you said? On the ground or is it in the middle of the train cart?

rays from sun are **almost** parallel! They are of-course, still angled, but the angle is soo small for all intents and purposes you can just say they are parallel.
Not sure how it was related to this video tho!
In a distance of a few meters surrounding the observer the sun rays seem parallel. But if the observer is, as was Eratosthenes, on Alexandria and other observer (the helper) is on Thebes , 800 kmts south, then the rays show the noticeable angle that allowed the Greek man to estimate the Earth Radius.

@@photosphotos :: Both are true. Two sun rays are parallel when the distance between the rays is short, less than a few kilometers; and oblique when the distance between the rays is large, as of hundred of kilometers or more.
I know all the popular science sources claim that the travelling twin will be younger.
I wonder when any scientist will tell the fact that both twins will be at the same age at the end of the travel.
The experiment actually has been done with twins and very precise Cesium atomic clocks, at a speed much much much slower than the speed of light, at only 1000 kmts/hr on an airplane for several hours. On returning the travelling twin was 0.000 000 273 seconds younger. There were other relativistic effects besides airplane speed (reduced gravity at high altitude, and movement against the earth rotation).
@@powerdriller4124 the tests were conducted at high altitude under pressure… the tests were flawed because the clocks were not calibrated to withstand the pressure which effected the operation of the clock.
