It is not important if Ishida had passed to the dark side or not, but I think that all the hype that the author has put on the character has not been well placed, as uryu in the latest saga does very little, I expected much more, it is also not clear why he was immune to Auswählen and why ywach did not see him in the future.

This isn't really an answer to the above question, but regarding the thing with Uryu declining to go to Hueco Mundo, it was Ichigo who said that's the reason why Uryu isn't going, but he remained silent, giving of this (in my iterpretation) reluctant look on his face. So maybe Uryu knew something about the Quincy ivaiding Hueco Mundo, or I'm reading into something that isn't there. Just a thought. It goes much beyond these 2:

      2. Uryuu - Gin
The General who wants to betrya the Leader

The other Commander 'blindly' following the Leader. Also both cut the Arm of the Rebelious one (refer to point 10)

The one who does not want to fight yet is very analatical. Also both trolled Ichigo
      5. Lille - Barragan
The arrogant, self-claimed strongest who looses to his own powers
      6. Gerard - Harribel
The warrior prototyp who follows the Leader just to be betreyed by him at the end (instead of being defeated by the protagonist)
      7. Pernida - Wonderweiss
The least human-like and both somehow are connected to hands. And both beaten a brutal at the beggining of their respective fight
      8. Gremmy - Nnoitra
A strong one to help Kenpachi develop
      9. Kirge - Ulquiorra

Uryu was always the smart one. I thought he was planning against them from the start.

  • @Lily_Selverne
    @Lily_Selverne 3 года назад +87

I think Yhwach naming Uryuu his successor makes sense for exactly the reason Yhwach gave him. Because Uryuu is unaffected by Auswaehlen. Yhwach already knew at that point that he was going to Auswaehlen the other Stern Ritter. Naming Haschwalth the successor would've been pointless for that reason. Once Yhwach completed his plan, he would've control an entire new world made up of all the current worlds merged into one, so he'd leave managing the comparitively small Quincy empire to his successor. I'm sure Yhwach knew that Uryuu was never truly on his side but it just didn't matter to him as Uryuu was the only one who fit the requirements for the task.
Also I strongly recommend going back to the Uryuu vs Mayuri fight and reading Uryuu's recollection of what Souken told him about using the Sanrei Glove and Uryuu's subsequent thoughts, and then immediately afterwards read the part in chapter 660 where Uryuu explains his plan to kill Yhwach to Ichigo. And what Souken said ties into the answer Uryuu gave to Ichigo in the Soul Palace that he's doing all this because he's a Quincy, and then his explanation to Haschwalth where he says he betrayed Yhwach to protect his friends. He's doing exactly what Souken said to do if he still wants to walk the Quincy path after finding something he truly wants to protect.

Never felt that Uryuu had 'gone bad', but that his joining the Sternritter was meant to be a point of ironic tension for us as the reader. We know Uryuu is likely a double-agent here, an infiltrator among a group we just learned is incredibly dangerous. Furthermore, I was always held in a level of tension feeling like something dramatic might happen to Uryuu for this, that YHWACH might be able to exhibit some control or even kill Uryuu at a whim now that he has his schrift. The reveal of Uryuu being made the heir really unsettled me because it felt as though it was YHWACH calling Uryuu's bluff and establishing a connection that would ultimately allow YHWACH to control/kill Uryuu.
I was constantly sure that Uryuu was being set up as putting himself into danger that would cost him his life but allow him the only way to afford his friends victory. At the end of the day, it's reflective of BLEACH's themes of the individual's relationship to society, where Uryuu is willing to (dangerously) infiltrate and fake being an ally to a cruel society for the sake of his connection to other individuals.

Honestly, him killing Mayuri in the final war would have fixed a lot of thing. He'd have actually done something to earn the trust of the Sternritter and killed a captain. It would have been a nice moment, him avenging his grandfahter and keeping his promise that he'd kill him.
Could have made things more dramatic and made people doubt a bit more about his loyalty.

You know, I never thought uryu was a bad guy. I was hoping that he was some triple agent kinda guy. This was my theory that the Ishidas were some quincy mutation that was free from yuha's will. This mutation scared yuha and gave him the choice to eliminate them on subjugate them to insure they cannot pose a threat to him. Soken after learning that the quincys truly had no free will aside from servitude to yuha and seeing the quincys change and become an empty shell of wat they were under servitude to yuha, defected along with a few quincys under his cause. They were the quincy on earth that were eliminated by the aswalen light, except the ishidas who were unefected. This is where Uryu comes in:
Uryu after being scouted and being told of yuhas plans decided to go in alone( at the time I thought the all mighty would not affect the Ishidas and hashwald) and find a way to take control of the quincys and return them to the way of life soken talked about. That's why he had to betray his friends because in his mind, if he waited for yuha to atain God hood and then take his power and use it to fix the current world instead of creating a new one or ruling over yuhas world. (Avenging his mother was somewhere In there too) after his plan failed and hashwald found him out uryu would join back up with Ichigo and they would use ichigos power an uryus imunity to defeat yuha.

my interpretation of Uryu's actions was one of confliction. Through the entire series up to this point Uryu has praised the Quincy and their powers. during this arc he is suddenly asked to join a group of Quincy, and he is not sure which side to stick with. He goes with his default and joins the Quincy and has regrets when he sees what they are all about.

I personally thought the Antithesis was a fine ability, awkwardly executed but it's a very strong ability against anyone except someone using the Balance. A lot of the Sternritters have Scrifts that don't really tie to their character or design. The girl with pink hair the power comes to mind, even Halscwald with the Balance, his power could've been anything and would've fit his character. Imagine he was B the Boost, and could Boost the power of others and his Attacks, sounds more like him than Balance but a lot less Broken and cool lol. Robert is probably N the Navigate like you said in another video, I guess he looks like a Navigator kinda so that may not count.

I think a fix for this whole thing Is in the anime adaptation, we see Uryu offered a position with the Quincies. Its kind of like a rehashing of Orihime getting abducted but like you said on its head. It could be why he has to break away, he's offered an opportunity to meet someone before everything even goes down. Instead of self sacrifice it's a on the dime decision to help from the inside. It would be so easy to add and to put some stock in why he had to make the choice. In this situation they could have threatened to steal his powers lest he joins, or a conversation between Uryu and whomever came could add some stakes.
P.s, quality content as usual! Liked!

Uryu Ishida is my favourite character in Bleach. One of the things I'm disappointed in with the final arc is that Uryu didn't do a lot. I wanted to see him in action a lot more. It would've been cool to see him fight other Soul Reapers like the Captains, and that they don't show what his power is until his fight with Haschwalth. They could at least show him defeat a Captain or another Soul Reaper without revealing how he did it. And it would imply that he has gotten a lot stronger.

I always feel like Uryu is even the better friend to Ichigo. Chad is explained as the best friend by Kubo, the author. But Kubo basically makes nothing with Chad. We see no supportive scenarios between Chad and Ichigo except that one time Chad tells Ichigo how HE uses fullbring. He is not even in the last arc so even Kubo forgot that CHad even exists...
Kubo writes Uryu as the more supportive of the two. Helping Ichigo saving Rukia (when he basically has no greater reason top help him). Saves Orihime on countless parts.
Later he even comes to Ichigo to support him against Ulqoirra and attempt to stop hollow Ichigo and almost getting killed in the process. He later tries to warn Ichigo about Ginjo and is one of the few characters fighting Yhwach.

Personally, when Kudo first teased us with Uryu joining the Sternritter, I was hoping that Uryu had been taken in by a more "sympathetic" side of we hadn't been shown yet. I presumed that some of them, such as Robert Accutrone, might possibly have had a friendship with Urya's grandfather, and wanted revenge against Soul Society for his friend's death. I presumed that a re-awoken desire for revenge, stirred up by Yhwach and those like Robert, would blind Uryu to the crueler, more despicable side of the Sternritter. I hoped for a rematch between Uryu and Mayuri, where Uryu would use his newly-granted powers from Yhwach to finally kill the captain - the very thing he failed to do back in the Soul Society arc - and because, let's face it, while he's a fun character, Mayuri needed comeuppance for (almost - looking at you, Szayelaporro) all the people he's killed and tortured throughout his life.
Eventually, of course, he'd learn that Yhwach is nothing but a selfish dirtbag who killed his mother and throws away his loyal followers the moment they hold no further use to him, and that would convince Uryu that he made the wrong choice and help Ichigo finally kill Yhwach once-and-for-all. Then Uryu would take over the Vandenreich and lead the surviving Quincy into a new age, one built upon his grandfather's teachings.

    1) I never believed Uryu went bad. A good way to fix this though. Have Uryu at the first invasion and confronted by a Sternritter, like Haschwalth or someone. He questions Uryu as to why he's helping the Shinigami considering their treatment of the Quincy and they'll probably consider him an enemy anyway. Uryu argues back that he's helping Ichigo not the Shingami and that Ichigo will protect him if the Shingami turn on him. Haschwalth says the equivalent of "Yeah, sure. Call for me when you get locked up." Then after the first invasion have Uryu jailed by the Shingami while Ichigo is out of commission. Feeling abandoned and betrayed Uryu calls for Haschwalth and he's transported to the Quincy world. This gives Uryu a reason to turn. He can say he was faking it later, but it gives the reader reason to doubt his loyalties
    2) While the Antithesis is a neat title, I think the Aegis could have been put to better use. Aegis: the power to protect, control, or support something or someone. Basically, it would be the ultimate support role, which, if we're being honest is exactly what Uryu is. Tactical support that is best when he is organizing and using both his and his allies powers to their fullest. Uryu would be able to boost the power of an ally, but also secretly gain a modicum of control over them as well. Ywach sees this as a means protect and strengthen the Quincy, giving more of a reason to name him the Heir. Also he thinks it a way to boost his Almighty power, but doesn't realize that it allows Uryu to keep one possible future hidden from his eyes. Uryu could also coordinate the second assault on the Serettai with his new ability, demonstrating his further "loyalty".

I love how Uryu was Jugram’s adversary. Uryu had Jugram triggered when it came to friendship. Uryu did what he didn’t do when it came to his friends. haha trailer hype has me watching every Ishida video out there, anyway great job on this one, you have some really great insights into Uryu's character. I have SO MANY thoughts about Uryu, so please bear with me as I type alongside watching this bc I love talking about him.
As you pointed out, there was a large gap between Uryu refusing to go to Hueco Mundo and the end of EBTR, and I can remember clearly the Uryu nation of the bleach fanbase waiting with bated breath for his role in the arc to come to light and there was a LOT of speculation. I think one of the biggest theories I saw regarding him was that if it did turn out he was with the Sternritters, it was because he had very much been backed into a corner while he was separated from his allies and it was safer for him to play along with the Quincies rather than fight them alone without a plan, or based on Quilge Opie's comment about Soken, that Uryu was there a mission to uncover information about his grandfather. I don't think either of these turned out to be true and in hindsight and speculation, the reason Uryu refused to go to Hueco Mundo felt so strange is because he was already considering the possibility of the nature of these new enemies. At the time Ichigo's room is invaded by whats-his-name during their friendly bread time, he thinks it might be an Arrancar because of the mask, but that was only his initial assessment. And knowing how sensitive to reiatsu Uryu is as a Quincy, it's possible that between then and Nel's visit that he'd already considered the polity - especially since Nel's arrival would've given him a point of comparison as an actual Arrancar. In that chapter, what to the readers is supposed to be the last "friendly" interaction between Ichigo and Uryu, he seems far too resigned that he can't go with them. The same guy that happily found a loophole in his pledge to his father to not associate with shinigami is suddenly going "too bad so sad" when someone needs help is, as you pointed out, not in line with Uryu's character- that is - unless he's already considering the possibility that if their enemies are Quincies like him, that he alone out of this group can infiltrate them and destroy them from the inside without his friends getting involved and being put in harm's way. We've seen it before where Uryu singles himself out to an opponent to try and keep someone else safe - he threatens Aramaki to take Orihime and run before his fight with Kurotsuchi, he tells Cirruci that he's not associated with Pesche so she won't attack him, he takes on Ulquiorra alone to buy Orihime and Ichigo time, and when he's hospitalised in the Fullbring arc, he initially refuses healing from Orihime on the off chance that the enemy is targeting him specifically (being in the hospital would keep him a safe distance from his friends so as to not put them in harm's way). The sadness and resignation that he just can't go with them this time make a lot more sense if, to Uryu, this is his final goodbye to his friends, and they don't even know that. That either, they'll return to find he's destroyed Warwhelt with himself inside (or died trying) or if they do meet again, he'll have to convince them he's their enemy.
SO. To answer your question, I don't think anyone from the get-go was convinced that Uryu had joined the side of the Quincies without an ulterior motive, from that point onwards, to me at least, it felt like Kubo was making us watch Uryu play a very dangerous game of political minesweeper. No one truly believed he was evil, but the repercussions of that meant that we watched Uryu navigate from within enemy lines, constantly balancing on the edge of what he needed to do to gain their trust, while also trying to avoid being discovered as he put his plan into action, while also having to shut down emotional responses to both his friend's reactions to the behaviour of Ywach and fellow Sternritters. It was very nerve-wracking to see Uryu essentially having a constant threat hanging over him when Ywach announces him as his heir while the Sternritters were all reluctant to trust him (and for good reason), with the word of Ywach being the only thing keeping them from ripping into him. That's what I read as Kubo's narrative angle when writing Uryu as one of the bad guys anyway - and your point about how we never see Uryu's introspection the entire time, I think it doubles up, to people who believed he had sided with the Vandenreich it makes Uryu's allegiances unclear, to those who weren't convinced, we can't see Uryu's plan or thought process, we don't know what his ulterior motive is and so we can't safely predict how he'll navigate it. Essentially on all sides we're all just reading it going "what the hell are you doing?"
Moving on - yes very much so, one thing that bothered me the most is that Uryu's survival of Auschwalen is never elaborated on. It's just put out there and even after Bleach has ended we still have to speculate with no definitive answer. It might be related to the fact that even with a mixed-blood mother, he still was born to two Quincy parents. Or perhaps Soken had a hand in his survival or maybe even a situation like Ichigo where he was protected somehow by Kanae (that would be nice, we don't know much about the Ishida family between Uryu being born and Kanae dying and I think it would just be a nice level of depth to the Ishida's and another similarity between Ichigo and Uryu). I can't see how it would relate to Antithesis, my understanding of Antithesis is that until Santen Kesshun, it doesn't just reject an event, but rather, there needs to be a selected target to take on what would've happened to him which I can't think of any decent candidates for but maybe there are some gaps in my memory from the last time I read TYBW.
I do kinda like Ichigo just trying to shout his way through to Uryu bc in the past, Rukia needed saving, Orihime needed saving, everyone affected by Tsukishima (which coincidentally did not include Uryu) needed saving, he's never had to deal with someone willingly going against him. I don't know what he was trying to achieve just be shouting his name the whole time, but it gives a strange sense that Ichigo's objective isn't just as simple as "defeat all the bad guys and save the day" when one of the bad guys is someone he wants to protect, and he doesn't quite know how to reach him. I do still think that the moments we got with them weren't enough though,
But very true, all in all, we just didn't spend enough time with Uryu for what was built-up. I think for the expectations we had for him going into a "Quincy Arc" and the long gaps of absence he had where we have no idea what he's doing, left a lot of build-up of speculations that got all dressed up but went nowhere. For one I would've loved to have seen a split between the Vandenreich, those who either believed Uryu was their ally or just believed in their majestys decision and those who wouldn't trust him as far as they could throw him. It would've been interesting to see the Quincies fall apart from the inside because of Uryu due to trust, and then fall apart literally due to his spirit particle plan. On that topic - the emotional consequences of Uryu going on a suicide mission to destroy the Vandenreich while being willing to die with his friends thinking he'd betrayed them is NEVER explored, especially when Ichigo had literally just said in the past arc to Uryu in the hospital something along the lines of "if we can't handle it by yourself, then we all need to come together" (the consequences of Ryuken not thinking to lock the door when autopsying his dead wife while his small child is in the house is also never touched on beyond "I don't wanna be a doctor") It was just a "Oh he's NOT a bad guy confirmed now we can move on to other stuff" which felt like an injustice to Uryu really. The thing about his motivations...I get wanting to avenge your mother, but to the readers, given that we never saw Uryu and his mother together in a panel or even a scene (where both of them are alive). We don't know what the Ishida family was like, whether Uryu was close with his mother, how her death affected him (maybe how it made Ryuken throw himself in to his work, driving Uryu to seek out more time with Soken just to have an affectionate parental figure in his life).
ALSO regarding the actual battle of Uryu vs Hashbrown - a friend and I joked the entire time that it was logistically a "no u", "no u", "I'm rubber ur glue whatever u say sticks back to u" and that Ryuken just showed up fashionably late with a Starbucks or whatever. Though regarding Antithesis, I very much took that as Uryu design-wise, has always been the antithesis to Ichigo. Themes of dark vs light, a loving family and a cold family, a desire to protect vs every man for himself, even their contrasting colours of orange and blue.
I can't say for certain whether he was truly wasted as a character, more than just not getting the catharsis of all the plot points that were set up. But I can say for sure, the fact that Uryu didn't get a proper scene to reunite with his friends after it was all over, where they just relished in living through another world-ending event, that we never get Ryuken's perspective at all in the present day of this arc and the fact Uryu and Ryukens relationship was never resolved properly and not given the proper ending they deserved, that we just have to assume they came to a resolution on their own outside of what we're shown, made me want to get wasted just to cope.
A fun side note, until this video I never realised that the kanji used for Licht Regen means "rain of light" - kinda fun when you think how one of the characters in Uryu means "rain" combined with the whole Prince of Light thing.

I had a theory that Uryu would renounce his Quincy abilities and ask either Urahara or Aizen to use the Hogyoku to turn him into something like an arrancar that way he would poison Yuha when he took those powers back. This would fit with his theme of pride in his Quincy heritage and him casting that aside would be fulfilling his grandfathers wish for him to live without that shadow and to embrace hollows as a part of the soul cycle.

Or even better idea: he had already been an arrancar when he joined Yuha and was just replicating Quincy abilities with clever uses of Cero, Bala, and Hierro, with his glasses functioning as his mask. Yuha would allow him to rebel and then take the Schrift back not knowing he put it on a Hollowfied human and been weakened enough for Ichigo to kill him. Maybe even show Uryu using a ressurecion to beat Haschwalth.

If Tsukishima "controlling" Chad is a slight against him then shouldnt that apply to Orihime as well? Chad was ready to murder Tsukishima in the Lost Agent Arc when they fought initially. Chad tried everything in his power to give Ichigo back his powers because he knew how Ichigo was feeling. He's the only one who took a proactive approach. Honestly, the anti-thesis makes sense completely. Uryu is the opposite of Yhwach, unaffected by his Auswahlen.. why wouldn't he be unaffected by The Almighty? I mean, he is "affected" but probably not a way even Yhwach is able to realize. I truly believe Uryu was a 6th Special War Power, simply because he himself is anti-Yhwach. Everything Yhwach does towards the Quincy, towards the Soul Reapers, Uryu shoves back into his face.

I also think Kubo made Him the antithesis bc He as a character was created as the antithesis or foil not only for Ichigo but for the shinigami as well, being pretty much the only quincy in a world dominated by them.
There's also the fact that His journey in the TYBW is the antithesis of haschwalth's decisions and outcomes.

16:53 I imagine it was just lucky genes that got passed on essentially, kind of like a punnet square where you have a few different possibilities as far as what can happen. Assuming that being quincy isn't a race thing and more so a singular gene the "quincy gene" I'll call it, then ryouken had a 100 percent chance to pass on the quincy gene to uryu. Making him a quincy. And his mother had a 50% chance of passing on the quincy gene or a non quincy gene, and he got lucky enough to get the quincy gene essentially making him a full quincy in blood.

uryu joining the vandenreich to me was not well thought out...for starters ywach letting him join the vandenreich should've never been possible. like didnt check him before letting him join? even if it was to monitor his movements. like, why is he entertaining this? ywach should know he came for revenge for his mother( he killed her). if he wanted uryu dead, he could've certainly done it, yet he gave him the perfect counter to his ability. and what did uryu think he was going to do? he never even attempt to kill ywach, and if it wasn't for the arrow that his dad give him (and last minute) or the antithesis( which was given to him) he was not going to do nothing to ywach.....

  • @jach6393
    @jach6393 2 года назад +1

Know I'm late on this one but pretty sure his schrift(?) Anti-Thesis is supposed to show how he's going against what yhwach is pitching what all quincy should do. He is the opposite of ywhach in that while yhwach is trying to destroy the world's under guise of protecting/ending his "father". Uryu is trying to kill ywach because he killed his mother and so many other and to protect the world's. Uryus and Yhwachs goal are opposites. While they do share similar motives/means to accomplish that goal. They stand on opposite sides.
I think the bigger question is, if yhwach and haschwalt can see the future how did neither of them see anything about what uryu was doing. Idk how an omnipotent being who can see all futures misses the one where he takes an arrow to the back. Unless has something to do with soul king which is a big maybe

Something I just thought of halfway through the video. What if kubo played the story from the stuff we got originally with the shinigami and quincies fights. But, he would give us the perspective of ichigo and uryu dealing with the death of their mothers and maybe in the final fight they fight Ywach with their fathers.

  • @milowolfface9392

Uryu saying that hollows are the enemy line was clearly just an excuse he gave his friends so he can go off and do what he has to. I don't understand how that is so hard to get. The way its drawn, his wording. When it first came out I specifically remember thinking, why would he lie like that? Then he switched sides, apparently to some people he did. But with the context of that lie early it was pretty clear and straight forward he was going to destroy them from the inside. Personally I think Kuba did not give anywhere enough to suggest he did but rather reconfirmed his good guy stance.
How this trips people up till this day I do not know.

  • @perryemerald9156

I think it makes sense for him to not help out the gang early on or the SS with his “plan” because as we know he still has strong pride in being a Quincy. He still doesn’t like Soul reapers, only tolerates them because of Ichigo and Rukia. I don’t think Uryu’s role was a dud I just think if the anime can add the details and some foreshadow, it’d be a perfect arc. Kubo also did confirm that him not dying from the Aushwalen would be explained in the anime

what I wonder is why didnt Ishida's power include being immune to the almighty because his ability is just a No you which isnt even close to how broken Balance is which almost does the same but better. I was hoping for more scheming. A twist where we as the reader see Uryu trying to sabotage the Vandenreich in the background but everybody else believing that Uryu really switched over to the dark side. I assumed that was Kubo's goal but Uryu was just chilling around until he had to shoot the last arrow.
I feel like the arc in general needed a bit more planning and 100-150 more chapters. The setup was just too big. Ishin and Ryoken for example not playing part in this even though it's a matter of the heart for both of them. Ishin letting Ichigo handle this on his own was also pretty strange. Ishin always let Ichigo do his thing but he arrived when he had to during the climax of fake karakura. Here he just didn't although he is one of the most capable shinigami there is and the danger levels were higher than ever before. I'd imagine him at least playing a bit more of a role. Maybe taking on a side guy or something. Nothing. He was drinking his beers waiting for the world to end or his son to win although he still had his final getsuga tenshou. Would have helped a lot.

Like you said just a moment or a few of his POV. His final fight not getting cut out and being a major battle but I also find it hard to believe he’d be stronger than haschwalth. Maybe expand the fight against ichigo with a few getsugas and some more arrows a conversation about their new found history they have together. A few more memories with his grandfather a conversation with ywhach and he would have been an mvp of the arc I love the stuff we got just adding a few more things would of made his impact amazing even with his plan not working
