I learned about this game a while back. I tried to find a copy, but never did find one in stores. So definitely an obscure title, which I guess makes sense for it being a JRPG based on the Wizard of Oz. The track ball forced implementation is a letdown. I understand wanting to make use of the system’s features, but when it becomes a hurdle to enjoying the game, maybe it’s best to stick with tried and true methods. I think I’d still give this a try though, if I stumble across it. I had forgotten about its existence, so thanks for the reminder.
Always happy to make people remember awful shit, and forget useful things they can use and apply to real world situations. Everything's worth a try once, even if the gameplay isn't great, and the touch-controls are annoying. You never know, you might get your money's worth. or your bandwidth :^)
My guy, theres a JRPG about Fredric Chopin, (which is great btw) there's probably a JRPG about everything at this point. On a more relevant note, the art in this game looks really beautiful. Cool video!
That is the most hypnotic skirt float I have ever seen, and i dosen't help that it's in like 90% of the video. I get the feeling that between the skirt mechanics and the panoramic, the devs where hoping you just be too entranced to care about the game being something more.
Ah no! Don't hate on Riz-zoawd. It's an extremely unique game that I don't think gamers of today can fully appreciate or understand. People are used to JRPGs with a fully navigable world map, towns, etc. Which would be great, admittedly. But it took several hours for me to realize that this game has more in common with racing games because of the way you speed through maps, navigate around obstacles, etc. In which case, the linear pathing makes total sense. I think the lack of a map and creating your own signs were all intentional, because the more you look at a map, the less you notice your surroundings. And I think the developers wanted "paying attention to surroundings" to be part of the game. Aka. traversing the Yellow Brick Road would be more than pressing up on a d-pad. I do think the weak point of the game is the battle system. While bosses can be challenging, trash battles are too frequent and too simplistic. Enemies, when placed in the middle of the road, totally ruin the pace of the game while you're dashing, almost like having a random battle while you're playing Sonic Adventure. Nobody wants that. And I think the game would have been much better if they either focused purely on the exploration end, or expanded on the battle system while reducing travel gimmicks. Production values of battle were also too low compared to the overworld. I know they wanted to appeal to fans of Dragon Quest with their first-person battles, but I think seeing Scarecrow, Lion, and Woodcutter on the field with Dorothy would have improved immersion. Even better--have the witches join your party as you progress. I also think you should have mentioned the outstanding OST, composed by Hitoshi Sakamoto of Final Fantasy Tactics fame. In any case, I have a huge soft spot for the design of this game, even for the parts that didn't work well. It has outstanding graphics, music, and art direction, as well as some unique gameplay combinations that I haven't seen before or since its creation. So I think it's not fair to label it a "bad game" and call it a day. It's just... too interesting of a creation to be written-off and forgotten. Like seeing a stranger whose personality and appearance make no sense, yet you have never seen such a person before, so you are invariably compelled to chase them if only to see what happens. As an aside, the official Japanese website for Riz-zoawd is still online after all these years. You can find it here: d3p.co.jp/riz/. Requires Flash.

Disappointing that the game isn't mechanically that great because the visuals are indeed great on the DS. Actually thought this was a 3DS game until he stated otherwise.
It's weird too, as all of the characters are blank slates after their opening scenes, and the focus becomes the world, but the world can't carry the entire game alone.

That combat system reminds me of Legrand Legacy. The goal was to make it 'strategic' but the end result is that you are pigeonholed into using certain characters and elements for certain enemies, as the difference between using the right skills and literally everything else leaves no room to actually strategize.
Someone else made the comparison to FFX and there're so many games that do this exact bloody thing, it's a bit infuriating. Works way better in shit like Fire Emblem, where the overall challenge is positioning and timing. When you're stuck in very simplistic, turn-based combat, it's mind-numbing.
@@Caspicum FFX did that? Granted, I haven't played it in over a decade, so maybe I just don't remember. There does need to be a balance though. Just enough where for instance, if the intended method is to remove all your materia to fight the Emerald Weapon in FF7, but someone would rather slot Final attack with Phoenix, hyper up the party and crush it in a dps race that shakes the ocean like I did, you can make it work xD

I stumbled on this channel last night and can't figure out how I'd never heard of it. I watch an embarrassing amount of YT so, considering my watch history, the algorithm really dropped the ball here. Great video. Great channel.
Oh damn, RUclips genuinely sends the nicest people on the internet to my channel, hey. I appreciate the comment, and hope I never go full simp and attack you. :^)
For reals though, thanks my dude.
Exactly what i think about the two zeldas on ds. Locking the game behind touch controls sucks so much.
Always happy to make people remember awful shit, and forget useful things they can use and apply to real world situations. Everything's worth a try once, even if the gameplay isn't great, and the touch-controls are annoying. You never know, you might get your money's worth.
or your bandwidth :^)
This actually looks like a good game.
I'd recommend giving it a go, but I'm not too sure you'll think it's good. If you do though, let me know what you think.
My guy, theres a JRPG about Fredric Chopin, (which is great btw) there's probably a JRPG about everything at this point. On a more relevant note, the art in this game looks really beautiful. Cool video!
Eternal Sonata is on the hit list, hey. Played it for fun but don't remember it being too spectacular.
No worries I speak fluent engrish.

I love this game still play it on my DS now and again.
That's fantastic! You ever do the dragon grind?
@@Caspicum The Father Dragons ? Yeah , needed to use the gamefaqs guide to help me out with the game now and again though lol.
Damn this game has a really rocking opening. Thank you camp for linking it in the description!
Nothing but quality bangers here.
Dang, I would have played this if it wasn’t for the wonk controls
Legends have it that a cheat code enables button inputs. I'd check that out!
I played this game back then. You get used to the controls. It's a fairly simple game so the trackball isn't too bad.
M K Ok, thanks for the reply, I think I’ll download the rom and give it a try
That is the most hypnotic skirt float I have ever seen, and i dosen't help that it's in like 90% of the video.
I get the feeling that between the skirt mechanics and the panoramic, the devs where hoping you just be too entranced to care about the game being something more.
They almost got me!
It's a real testament to Casp that even when I don't like Casp, I like Casp
That's definitely the vibe I'm going for.
She seriously need to participate in Olympic. That running speed is crazy
Imagine all the mobile phone ads she'd get!
That dress length is such a tease. 😏
I need a Oz themed RPG that spands multiple books.

See, this is why I'm a long time subscriber! For videos like this!
It took a while to break away from being the Digimon guy, but I hope I've succeeded...
More Digimon coming soon.
I'm a simple person I see a casp video talking about random rpgs and I click on it as soon as I see it
Sometimes simple is best. This is one of those times.
I don’t think this is real. I’m probably just having a bad drug trip
You might be on to something tbh
You're having a fever dream
I guess we're sharing the same trip then
This video reminded me that the DS is full of random games. I would love for you to make a video about the RPG from the Percy Jackson movie that nobody knows exists and the Little Red Riding Hood shooting game both for DS
There's a Percy Jackson RPG? Well now I'm interested.
holy shit, someone mentioned Etrian Odyssey
Not enough people adore Etrian Odyssey, which means not enough people have played it.
Have you ever seen the show Code Lyoko that used to be on Toonami?
... Did you know it has an RPG on the DS?
I vaguely remember it having two RPGs and an action game, but I could be confusing it for two action games and an RPG... Or mis-remembering entirely. What a weird show that was.
@@Caspicum It was weird, but I love it. It was probably the first media that introduced me to the concepts of artificial intelligence and virtual reality, which I have subsequently fallen in love with.
The whole thing is actually on RUclips under an official channel and I'm about halfway through watching it. The writing is sometimes a little shoddy and repetitive, but considering the average caliber of Toonami shows in that day I'm honestly impressed by the high-level concepts the show handled.
Plus the fact that it regularly combined 2-D with 3-D animation and did it *well* . It may have been the first big show to do that. Certainly the first I saw.
And it was French. What other French show has made it big in the states like that?
Anyway I'm fanboying a bit. I enjoyed the new video. Thanks you for playing these obscure games... Mostly so I don't have to.
Merry belated Christmas!
@@ForumArcade Isn't Totally Spies a French show as well? If so Totally Spies along with Code Lyoko would be 2 French shows that made it big here in the US.
@@superrayman3 Apparently so. Maybe I don't give the French enough credit.

The wonderful Wizard of Oz
There is a patch that let's you control the movement with the d-pad.
Where?
@@JasonGodwin69 it's actually a code, but you can patch it onto the rom using a tool called dsatm. gbatemp.net/threads/ds-4268-the-wizard-of-oz-beyond-the-yellow-brick-road-usa.184763/page-4
@@Rihcterwilker Yeah, it comes in the .CHT files, which I definitely didn't use to power level for the super bosses. I tried it a few times, but couldn't get it to work for the life of me. I'm sure it does work, which makes you wonder why it wasn't a toggleable option if a simple cheat can enable it.
This actually looks rather sweet.
Holy hell I remember this. There’s a bunch of crazy weird Wizard of Oz stuff like Return to Oz or the manga Orz. Strange surreal rabbit hole of a franchise.
Any rabbit hole is one worth jumping down, even if it's to see how bat shit it truly is.
I have a gaming magazine with the preview of this game. I remember no one gave much attention to it, but I was interested
Why they released it on Christmas day baffles me. Maybe that contributed to it going largely ignored?
Ive done it, in the spirit of Christmas i have finished watching each and every video that you have uploaded thats available in the channel, much love & happy holidays
Oh wow, that's some serious commitment. The early years were rough, but I'm glad you stuck it out! Happy holidays!

Oh damn, they do look quite similar.
Well this caught me offguard.
not just how you actually were right about being the next video something no one will expect.
but the fact i rewatched the movie recently.
watched my friend play Danganronpa 2 that had a Wizard of Oz parody.
and now this.
The universe is trying to guide you. You must allow it!
That trackball shit would make for a cool Sonic game
They should've used that in Dark Brotherhood...
One of the arcade sonic games actually does use a trackball for movement control. It’s called ‘SegaSonic the Hedgehog’.
Oh man, I think I remember reading about this game in a magazine years back
AND YOU DIDN'T BUY IT? shame!
Is it weird that this game makes me feel kinda nostalgic yet I never even played it? It's nice to look at and I really like the details in dorothy's running animation. Wish we had throwback games that had this sort of limited ds or ps1 artstyle. It could be genuinely nice to look at at times.
I'd imagine it's like City Pop, or Vaporwave, where shit you've never seen before, and places you've never been to, give you a rush of nostalgic vibes. It's a certain kind of magic. Embrace it!
I'm surprised you didn't mention that Media Vision also made Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory
It honestly slipped my mind. I think I was more taken aback by the Wild Arms thing.
Seeing you run around with Dorothy and weaving across areas made me think about 3d sonic games
EVERBODY SUPPPPPPPPPPPER SONIC RACING.
Disappointing that the game isn't mechanically that great because the visuals are indeed great on the DS.
Actually thought this was a 3DS game until he stated otherwise.
I've honestly seen 3DS games that look worse, this could pass for a Switch title with a slight resolution bump.
This game is how I scratched through 2 ds screen protectors. It didn't require it, but it was so frustrating to use I found myself scratching rapidly.
Bloody hell, I would've thought a better game'd have done it. Something like The World Ends With You
“Not an experience I would ever recommend” *immediately goes to emulate it
I remember seeing this game in Nintendo Power when I was a kid and you just brought back those really confused memories
great vid my dude
I appreciate that. If I can make people more confused than they already are in current year, I've achieved something.
7:16 That's where the failed the most, I relate to the enemies more than the main character
It's weird too, as all of the characters are blank slates after their opening scenes, and the focus becomes the world, but the world can't carry the entire game alone.
@@Caspicum idk man BOTW exists
I remember I was always curious to try this game out, although it never got released in Europe, unfortunately. But even despite its flaws, I admit I'd still like to give it a chance. Nice video though!

I thought this was a 3ds game in a good way. The graphics look pretty good for its time
I cheated a bit, there's a little help from an emulator, but it still looks sick on a legit NDS. I had to play it properly, but can't capture NDS shit without emulating.
I discovered this game years ago. I loved it. It was the first rpg I played all the way through.
Oh damn. I do get that, because a lot of RPGs drop off about halfway through, but that's an interesting way to enter the genre.
This... this will suffice. Right in time for me to have some pork instant ramen for lunch, and to procrastinate on my RPG Maker project and/or finally finish FF Tactics. Also holy crap, it's by the guys who made Wild ARMS? :o
Do you post some info on your project somewhere?
@@Rihcterwilker I mean, I have a userpage on a RM site? I haven't gotten far enough in my new game to have a demo yet; just started in-editor today, design doc notwithstanding.
Once you get your game crankin', you gotta send me that shit, my friend.
Discovered this game couple of years ago. While I absolutely love its visuals, I wasn't sure if I'd actually like the game. It's nice to have a video dedicated to it. I read some reviews back when I first heard about the game and this video seems to point out the same problems. It's a shame. This could have been an awesome game. Might still get it one day though because of its uniqueness.
Definitely grab it anyway, even if you have to *liberate it from the internet*. Everything's worth a go once.
Just finished it. Loved it!
Did you play it on emulator or NDS? Playing it on NDS made me enjoy it a lot more tbh
@@Caspicum DS! I liked the track ball, a very different and peculiar way to move
Since you mentioned Etrian Odyssey would you be willing to talk about it. It is one of my favorite seiries and you did it some good justice. I love when people actually know it.
It's definitely possible. I try to avoid series with too many games, and EO's at... 8 now? Took me 4 and a half years to get through the Digimon RPG series, which only had like 13 games. Three more came out while I was doing it.
That said, I would love to at some point.
@@Caspicum It technically has 8. 2 are remakes. It even has its own mystery dungeon game(s). (One is a japan exclusive) but yeah I get your point.
