We Glorify the Motherland With Labor (1940)
This song was composed only eight months before the Nazi Germany invaded the USSR and embroiled it in World War II - or as the former Soviet Republics call it, The Great Patriotic War. For many years already, the Soviet people had been preparing for an inevitable second great war involving the world's most powerful capitalist powers. A pre-war culture comparing the struggles of everyday life to war and battles emerged, with it came films and songs such as this one. The whole country was being mobilized for the bloodiest war of the 20th century. And with the astounding successes of the First Five Year Plan, Industrialization, and Collectivization, the USSR had entered into the ranks of the world's most industrialized nations - and not a moment too soon.
