In this video, I will show you how to Join Windows Server 2019 to an existing Active Directory Domain.
Read my blog on this topic:

I have a question. So if you have Windows Server 2019 for Users and User Files, with different machines connected, would you be able to have both Windows 10 machines and Windows 7 machines without any User directory issues? Also would it be possible to add a Windows XP machine connected to the Server? - I know XP had different User file directory like it did not have a Downloads folder, instead web broswers saved files to the My Documents folder.
Are you asking about roaming profile?
If your answer is yes, then please dont go for roaming profile instead use folder redirection.
I faced problem with windows 7 and windows 8 machine. I have to test it for windows 10.
Thank you for very nice question. I will update you later on.
Update: I have test this scenario with server 2019 DC, Windows 10 (v1903) and Windows 7 VM.
1. Roaming user profiles in Windows 7 and Windows 10 are incompatible.
2. It will create two different user profile for the same user with two different folder userprofile.v2 (for windows 7) and userprofile.v6 (fo windows 10)
3. By using UNC path user can access the share folder (where we have saved user profile), User can see both folder and without any problem user can access the both profiles.
4. User can copy data from one profile to other profile without any issue.
5. If you are migrating from windows 7 to Windows 10 with roaming user profile, first read this technet discussion article.

For anyone having problem joining a domain or pinging domain controller (I googled a little):
"Change The Network adapter of two Virtual Machine to VirtualBox Host Only Adapter and Reboot The Guest Machines And Try To Ping
Mostly Virtual Machines are connected to NAT network
You cant access the internet in this adapter l. You may use the NAT or Bridged Adapter"
Otherwise change the network setting to Bridged Adapter and restart network. it will work to access the internet and two virtual machines also.
You can also use Internal adapter type to communicate only between VM's.
I had to search for 5 hours to find this video thank you.
Thanks man, you're better than my teacher
Thank You!
Its not only a channel but a magic
Thank you for kind words..
Greatly benefitted from your Active Directory Domain videos. In my case, while trying to add a server to the domain, I got one SID conflicting message and could not join the domain. Basically, SID of the Domain Controller and SID of the server wanting to join the domain seems same. I had to run sysprep utility to recover. Have not completed yet, will take a look.
Thanks for the video so much. It helped me a lot.
I am able join VM01 server to domain but i see internet is not working nor on Dc and VM01.
Please let me know how to enable the internet? I configured bridged adaptor as well for both VM.
You need to configure the IP addressing according to your local IP network. On your Physical machine (connected to internet), open the command prompt, type command "ipconfig /all" and hit enter key. Note down the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway address. Now setup any free/available IP address on your Server VM from the same network range. And also configure same default gateways address on Server VM.
Thank you!! That helped me a lot. Very clear and focused on the relevant things to get the job done. Keep up the good work
Hi , in windows server 2019 i don’t know why i cannot start the gpupdate service , how to do thanks.
I have google domain and windows vps,
I created forward and reverse look zone in my windows server vps,
and added ptr record in reverse look zone,
but my domain says no reverse (PTR) detected?
In real scenario, It will take around 48 hours to populate DNS records.
10/10, excellent video. Very easy to follow!
Thanks for the video.
is he using two server machine one for domain control and another one for server ?
Yes, two VMs. One for DC and second for member server.
@@MSFTWebCast thank you so much for clearly that.
Please show how to add and remove users to ACTIVE DIRECTORY and give permissions to access folders.
God lead me to this person to help me solve my school project, thank you!
you might have to disable firewall to get domain to connect
No, there is no need to disable firewall on domain controller. All required ports are by default open (allowed) in firewall.
Why suddenly jump to member server (that 1 which didn't have any tutorial too ??) and I cannot get the result
You just need to create a new second VM and install the Windows Server 2019 on it. After installation take the snapshot and you have your member server.
And more add and setup MAIL SERVER.Thank you
This video really helped ,thanks
how do i create a server and a dc without it crashing when i turn them both on
Thanks MSFT
unfortunately mine is not ping from the new server to the domain and how did you come up with the default gateway. please explain
Check the IP address of the domain controller, pout the IP address on member server from the same range as domain controller. There will be no need to put default gateway.
Why we join Server to Domain?
Where did you install server 01?
PLEASE help us.
Thanks.
same question
I have the domain controller aswell the Server2 in Azure. How Do I make it. Its giving me error 'Server not operational', I also have Both server in Same Network on Azure. Why it's not connecting to Domain
Did you try to ping your domain controller ip in cmd? if you get response from pinging domain controller ip address then you can run following commands on your server (not domain controller)
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int ip reset reset.log
route /f (reboot required)
netsh winsock reset catalog
after rebooting try to ping the domain server with its name. Domain controller name.domain name.
I hope it will work.
thank you!
bro, I wish you numbered the videos in your playlist.
Hi MSFT webcast,
I start everything like names and IP, only my different is I try to connect PC windows 10 it failing …..
my first question after u add domain into pc which has windows10 asking for Computer/domain and password ….that not still from where I get that Info do I know to create new in active directory users and computer ...
If you have not created any user on AD, use domain administrators credential to join windows 10 pc.
Hi,
That was problem with administration we failed to join but i created user and it worked with me another important dns must be there
I followed along with your instructions and they worked perfectly for me. Thanks! Good Job!
Thanks for the great video.. I tried all your steps in adding my server 2019 to server 2012r2 domain but I have been unsuccessful, It still does not find the server when i ping .... but strangely when I type the server name I am able to get response back but IPv6 instead of IPv4, and also when I type nslookup I get unknown.... any suggestions...
On server 2019, have you specify the server 2012 r2's ip address as a preferred DNS server address?
@@MSFTWebCast Yes I did after I watched your video but still no response.. I even added reverse lookup zone under DNS manager ... any other suggestions ..
@@armenal can you ping to your server 2012R2 DC using domain name or using DC's Fully Qualified Domain Name?
No, it doesn't but when I ping just servers name of then I get a response back. All I want to do is to add the domain name to the new server 2019 and use it as a workstation? Do I have to setup DHCP on the old server?
@@armenal Problem is related to DNS server..As you are not able to ping with FQDN. Check out DNS servers IP address is configured properly or not?
my password does not seem to work after the server restarted after adding it to my domain is there a fix?
You can use your domain user accounts UPN (username@domain.name) to sign in or you can use local user account (created on your server) using .\(username) format to sign in.
I am not able to ping to the Active directory domain. Can anyone help?
Both computers are in same network? What is IP addressed assigned to the server and DC?
Thanks bro really helped me
7:36 Do you know the way?
I can ping IP address but not domain.local
something is missing in your configuration. review the steps...
Bro how to create ip address static
hie what f i can not change my domain or workgroup option
You may not have sufficient permission to change it.
when i uses "nslookup" command, it shows : "Default server : Unknown" How to fix this ?
Are you asking about domain controller or server/client (which you want to join) ? Have you specified preferred DNS server address correctly?
Do you have reverse lookup zone with PTR entry on your DNS server?
@@MSFTWebCast I'm asking about Domain Controller, yes i followed everything but still getting the same Error.
And one more query, how to speed up system ? Its been slowed down a lot after configuration
Probably IPv6 is enabled on local DC, Just check nslookup after disabling IPv6 from network adapter. Are you using virtual box for the server?
I too am having the same issue. I have tried adding a reverse lookup zone and ptr, my DC is a Hyper-V instance. I have also disabled IPv6 on the DC NIC.
unable to ping. what to do ?
1. Check IP addressing on both Servers.
2. Check VM Network adapter settings. Make sure both are set to same network adapter type. E.g. Host-Only Adapter.
3. Check Firewall rule. Allow ICMPv4 Packet through firewall.
@@MSFTWebCast it is not working unable to connect server to dc server. when the trubleshoot is done it says dns server is not responding
You never told that you are using two software
Hey, I couldn't get a reply from DC to the server!
Did you check connectivity with Domain controller by pining the IP address of DC? Also check for nslookup.
@@MSFTWebCast hey it worked thanks a lot 🥰
did you set your virtualbox settings in both servers to bridged instead of Nat like they are by default?
@@RJMH You can use Bridge adapter type but mostly I used "Internal" adapter type for my all VM. I only choose bridge when I need Internet connectivity in VM's.
do both the hosts need to be under the same network (subnet) ?
Not necessary but both host mus be able to communicate with each other.
@@MSFTWebCast thank you. Great videos and presentation. Your explanations are crystal clear for anyone to follow. Great work!
@@mk-mc8yx Thank You.
How do you switch computer to server?
I am using test lab setup in Oracle VirtualBox for this demonstration.
Buy a server OS
Install vmware esxi on your computer, it's hypervisor OS
At 07:14 in the video, I only see one computer.
Because the other computer was joined earlier.
.file?
this is the biggest bunch of BS from MS I have ever seen... make it impossible to freaking join a server to a domain unbelivable
Have you found a solution for this? I have the same problem
@@isore3090 make sure your dns is straight and you DC has a proper fqdn in dns.
This really could have been a 1 minute video.
Will try shorts.
ok
that inglish hurts my ears...
Think you need to consult ENT specialist for that and by the way sorry for all the troubles.
