- I stumbled upon a closing Macy's at Salem Center on High Street Northeast in Salem, Oregon. Originally opened as a Meier & Frank in October 1955, this location was rebranded to Macy's in 2006. However, due to the building being outdated and containing asbestos, the store corporate office decided not to spend money on renovation. In January 2025, Macy’s announced the closure of 66 locations, and this store was among them. This is officially the end of era for the city of Salem. So sad to see them go even though it was my childhood store.

That's correct! Yes I do agree with you it is the nice store I've ever seen. I am going to miss having my car parked at the Macy's parking garage once they close in the end. For sure I will also miss going to the store itself.

I used to go to the coin store "across" the street in Liberty Plaza. That mall closed all of it's stores and booted the coin shop out. They damaged the building ripping out the escalator.
It’s sad everything changes. I feel like downtown Salem is going to be a ghost town one day.
Sad to see this macys close. That one was my childhood store, with the old JCPenney that has been gone for a few years, that mall seems to be getting deader every year, so depressing to see these stores close, also all the big lots in Oregon are going to close so I read, also speaking of closing places have you been able to film the closing Albertsons in Roseburg? You don’t see to many grocery stores close and that store is closing in a few days or weeks.
I knew it was going to happen eventually :( I found out Baskin Robbin inside the mall closed down last month too. It’s sad to hear Big Lots are closing all of them in Oregon. Haven’t been to Roseburg to film the closing Albertsons yet, hopefully I’ll get there at some point!
@ hopefully you can get to the Albertsons I hope something will take over that spot and all of the big lots to that will be many more vacancies in Oregon, the Albany big lots is still sitting empty too and as far as I know nothing is going to take it over.
Sad to see Macy's dying still remember the almost a month ago me and a friend where in macys spending our allowance everything seem normal now it's disappearing 11:50 thought that was me until I realized my shirt was in a lighter shade
Sad everything does changes. Last November, I went here and considered buying work pants. I didn’t do so because they were incredibly expensive. I ended up going to Walmart on Turner Road and they had cheaper ones. When you thought it was you in the video, what time did you get here? I came around 3:15ish in the afternoon.

Great video, Andy! I've never heard of Meier & Frank company. There used to be a department store in the East Coast called E.J. Korvette, but that went out of business the same time Meier & Frank did. I like the beginning of the history before it was a Macys. But im also sad that Macys is closing, and it sucks they dont want to do the renovations to keep it open.
Thanks TeknBolt! I've heard of Meier & Frank for a long time. I think I might have been to this store as a Meier & Frank as a kid. Otherwise, I don't remember very well. Also never heard of E.J. Korvette, was it similar to JCPenney and Macy's? I appreciate that you like the beginning of the history, thank you! It's hard to believe the corporate doesn't want to invest in remodeling this place. I heard the employees who work here were mistreated by the management. Very sad. I sometimes wonder had they fully renovated this place, maybe they would not be closing right now.
@AndysRetailExploration They were similar to Costco and had a membership program. I've never been to one but my parents did in the 70's.
