I'm gonna give up some juice on fishing a lipless in the pre-spawn and spring: the point of fishing a red crank is to mimic a craw as closely as possible. Try retrieving it like a real craw - Pop it up, like a craw popping up from the bottom, give about 3-4 quick cranks, and then let it drop back down and let it rest 3-5 seconds before doing it again. This works amazingly well, especially for red lipless cranks.
I don’t give up any juice to people who aren’t serious about wanting to learn. If people are serious about fishing they’re watching this channel. That technique is spot on and it’s not a secret that hasn’t been talked about before for anyone who wants to research and learn it. 👍
Fifty years ago we would go to Toledo Bend for a week vacation. We only took one lure and that was a 1/4 red rattle trap. That was the good old days when fishing was in its prime.
Yup! My lake loves this technique. It has all 4 I ever bought attached to underwater structure using the recommended "yo-yo method." They were allowed to sink and never came back up.
I hate to hear that! I did not mention a lure retriever in this video, which I need too. My recent trip this last Saturday, we were catching bass out of standing timber with the lipless crankbait. They got hung up several times, and my lure retriever came through and I did not lose one luckily. The two biggest fish in this recent trip came off of the lipless. Thank you for watching and good luck to you! - Jimi
I love fishing them in our deep and clear lakes in the west. There are days when they will come up and hit it on the fall. You feel that "thunk" and know they've got it! I need to try the rod sweep technique in some of the shallower areas.
Thanks buddy !! I haven't put in much time using lipless baits, but now I just might start.. I'm here in Middle Georgia... right between lake tobesofkee and lake Sinclair.. Again, Thanks !!
Great video Jimi, thanks for the knowledge! I've always considered (wrongly) the lipless to be a grass only lure. Sounds like I need to start picking it up on my NE OK rocky lakes too.
Absolutely. My favorite winter to early spring tactic is throwing a lipless on rock banks and rock to clay transitions. Deadly and catches bigger than average fish.
I love fishing lipless cranks….I have caught fish on all 3 of those retrieves you explained…most of my fishing is in vegetation with soft bottom. My two most effective lipless are the spro aruku Shad and a Jackall TN70 one knocker. Those two lipless baits can be yo-yo’d or pumped vigorously without the bait tumbling over itself and fouling your hooks on your line.
Great video sir! Lipless is not in my arsenal, but I need to try it with the tips provided! Thank you for the information! Looking forward to the next video!
I am without question the angler that despises it. Tried it over 50 times on all bodies of water last year and had zero success. But after watching this, I might just have to tie it back on and give these techniques a try for a couple of casts. Then I’ll eventually go back to my swim jig or crankbait. LOL
Thanks! Definitely needed this video. This is one lure/technique I struggle mightily with. Your description of your early years/experiences with this method pretty much fits me to a T. I will have to plan to commit some effort towards trying out your suggestions.
Yes, I was almost done with this guy in the winter. Thought it was a lie amongst fisherman… until when I figured it out! Good luck to you. Thank you for watching. - Jimi.
Techniques are almost limitless because lipless are incredibly versatile. I struggled for years with jigs and lipless cranks and didn’t use them for years because of it. I decided to pick them back up a few years ago and man did I figure them out and have caught some absolute pigs. The lipless crushes year round but especially the pre spawn for me. Fun fact I’ve never even had one single bite on red, I’ll go back through the same area with a shad patten and whack em…
Nice! That is interesting about the red too. That is one reason why I mentioned there are some parts of the country where the shad/bream dominate. From my experience, during the winter the crawfish rules. - Jimi
That is an old trick I got told when I was younger. I have not found it to be the difference in catching fish and not in a given day. I know it has a time and place to be a factor. Just not experienced it myself but I have tried/ will continue.
I usually fish too shallow for a crank bait, but one of my biggest bass was as a kid trolling a Rappala Rat L Trap - idk how much he weighed (were talking almost 30 years ago), but he was 25 inches.
I was on a pre spawn rattle bait bite on a flat in only like 3’ of water in the back of a cove. They were choking baits yo yo’d in that 3’ water column. Sure seemed to me my 3/4 oz red eye shad actually fell slower thru that 3’ than my 1/2 oz red eye shad did. Have you ever noticed this before? I’d always just assumed that heavier meant a faster fall. That may not actually be the case with a Red Eye shad in the conditions I mentioned.
That is interesting. I have been told about the yo yo being affective in shallow water. It is something I need to give more of a shot in the right situations for sure! Last year on a lowland reservoir lake, the sweep retrieve was coming through on a 2-3 ft flat next to a ditch that was 3-4 ft. Water temps were in the low 40's. - Jimi
I'M betting Jimmy got a "lesson" one day and decided he better learn about those lipless crankbaits. But he seems to have it now. I was fishing with a lipless crankbait one time and my partner said "let me see that bait." He cut it off and said, "now tie on a bait that will catch one." I fired that partner after that trip and had 27lbs the next trip at the same lake. Thanks for the info Jimmy.
So ironic that last night i thumbtacked a lake fork waterproof map on my wall along with a ray Roberts map. I live less than an hour away from Ray Roberts and I haven't fished it yet.
so I've thrown mainly lipless burning it mid to high water column. since im fishing bigger lakes more an more i want to fish deeper and bottom. isn't it snag city fishing a lipless on bottom , esp around rock ?
They do come through the rocks better then you think. I have a video that came out last week where I was catching fish on a lipless in 10-20 ft on grass / timber areas. I also have a lure retriever that has came really handy when fishing them in cover / deeper situations.
I agree red traps work in spring but I do not think it's because of craws. I believe the bass are pre SPAWN and they hit red and loud lures out of aggression before spawn. Red plastics don't play great until summer (no noise). Just my opinion so no one flip out and call my mom names.
I have them in my box! Certain special colors that you can’t buy… There is a lake close to me that the only lure you need at times of the year is the original! Crazy how they eat it there. - Thanks for watching!
Jonny has two new videos recently uploaded on the FTM page. Go check them out! He has still been fishing a lot. We have been working kinks out with getting the new channel rolling and now he is working on getting more content on FTM now! Stay tuned. Thanks! - Jimi
Great tips and video!! This is a 100% year 'round lure!! If I had to pick one lure to throw for the end of time, it would have to be the lipless. Add this mod from my video ruclips.net/video/l3Z1LhUB_eY/видео.html and you could cast into a cup of water and catch a bass.
From my experience fishing a lake here in Arkansas that is the closest thing to a Florida lake is to follow the rising water. Find a creek / ditch that is coming in the lake. Follow it for as far as your boat will take you. Fish in these types of water will go with the rising water. Sometimes they go where we can’t get to them. When you find a true creek/ditch then it makes it easier to target them. Goodluck - Jimi.

Agreed; in water that's heavy with crayfish, red is the go to in fall and winter - even with a swim bait or a spinner.
Cool video, packed with info. I’m definitely the guy that hasn’t given the lipless enough time. Going to change that though. Thanks Jimi.
