Knowing how to hike in the wilderness is a plus, you can avoid obstacles, and more importantly...possibly get help (like the lady who hiked for a number of days after he car broke down and was rescued. She would’ve died if she stayed with her car and waited for help with her car. But hiking isn’t the only skill needed to survive in the wilderness, as you kinda stated.
There is a different between hiking and knowing survivor skills

Sheila is such an undercover badass
For the gum one, the reason most couldn't get it to work was because they left the paper layer on the gum wrapper on. On some, the paper was touching the anode (-) and cathode (+) of the battery instead of the foil. Paper is a insulator instead of a conductor which is why it didn't work.
These reactors were so wholesome. Apologizing for pointing the flashlight toward the camera, making sure the fires are out, not shading the crew for giving them the wrong materials (e.g. in the last experiment, in the tutorial video i think the person had an actual piece of foil, not a candywrapper, which might work better? idk), etc.
The gun wrapper has a very thin layer of aluminium foil, which would be the blue side of the wrapper. The other side is the paper, which burns because of the energy transferred. They did give them a good wrapper.

The reason why so many of them failed the final challenge is because the wrapper needs to be thinner only at a certain focal point. R = pl/A. When the whole line is the same width, it doesn’t carry enough current to burn one portion of it.
