I was on shift that day I’ve been working for Hovertravel for the past 6 years as a cashier, I started out as an apprentice I’m known as a HSA (Hovercraft Service Agent) I’m responsible for ticket sales answering customer queries the general up keep of the Ryde terminal. It’s a very unique job there is nothing quite like it. The people I work with are amazing and you were given the pilot talk by Captain Paul Grant a man who I have tremendous respect for as I do with all my colleagues. He’s a wonderful man very witty intelligent and articulate. Kind regards Josh Hayes 😊
As a small child I remember being transported from Dover to Calais in the huge car-carrying hovercraft that used to run. One of my earliest memories - obviously made quite an impact. That was great, thanks Chops 👍
So... you counter steer in a hovercraft 🤔🤗 So nice to see people like Steven so knowledgeable about the craft, its history and where it is in use 👌👏 Inspired to do a day trip on hovercraft in 2023. Great video, thank you !
Great to see people have such a passion still for these craft. Very good video explaining a great deal including in the cockpit. Does look similar in ways to a helicopter to pilot
Commuted on those girls to IOW every day for seven years. Loved every trip. Especially remember the time they stopped half way to place someone's loved ones ashes in the sea.
Well, what can I say! You are like a singer, who can sing any song! Not one motorbike, but all of the LCR ingredients were there! Well done John and Greg! Very entertaining as always! 👍
That was a really interesting walk through and description on how to fly a hovercraft. By comparison with an aircraft it’s a dog’s dinner. I really enjoyed the pilot’s description and learnt a great deal. That was really interesting. With regard to safety, I found the most surprising thing was that ground staff were wearing HiViz jackets (quite why during daylight I don’t know) and despite knowing there was a hazard with flying stones, wore no eye protection. Great video, Thanks.
These hovercraft are absolutely amazing - I spent a whole day once to just experience the Griffons and I have to say it was one of the most fascinating rides I have taken! Very interesting to see the cockpit and hear from a pilot also - Lovely video
Loved that chops! I have a hovercraft museum near me in lee on solent! I always stare at the massive hovercraft in the yard as we pass by! Cheers buddy
Wow!!! I never knew hovercraft had VP propellers, I always thought they had ducted fans. That is amazing so that means the engine power useage is much more efficient across a wider Eng Rpm power range. Great video👍
Used to maintain a hovercraft for the fire service was only a small 3/4 person one with a volkswagen 1.9tdi engine. Had to go on a course down in Portsmouth I think it was and they had the old channel crossing hovercraft there. They were huge.
Wow well done Chop’s another fantastic video you have pulled out of the hat, totally unexpected really enjoyable and you done a cracking job. You really are the top RUclipsr always amazing content keep up your good work buddy and thank you for taking us along for the ride👍👍👍
We took the hovercraft over to Ryde last weekend, a first for me, it's a fabulous way to cross. Interesting to hear about the ballast, as the hovercraft we were on was definitely lower on the RHS, which we assumed to be the wind, so we were surprised to find it was still RHS low on the return crossing. I guess the pilot doesn't always adjust the trim? Over in Ryde we saw a medivac to the mainland happening - it looked to a bit of a draughty stretcher ride from the ambulance across the slipway to the hovercraft!
Remember in the early 90s before the beach barriers, when they had several marshals keeping people away from the landing pad, they'd then sweep it before every landing.
Great in depth view of the hovercraft chopsy, enjoyed that .👍👍 some machines they are and great to watch would love to have a go on one . Oh and congrats on reaching the Ton .😁👍👍
Really enjoyed this, John! Missed the early sneak peek you shared on Patreon. But this was a really cool experience, and a great idea for a video. Fascinating and enlightening. Well done, buddy 🔝🎥🎬👍🏻
Amazing craft, Chops. I remember a trip to France on one of the giant hovercraft (I think it was a Saunders Roe SR1) out of Margate. Great vid. Come to think of it I think it was Ramsgate.
That seems quite easy as compared to flying an aircraft . At least on a hovercraft one can float as compared to coming down on an aircraft. If carrying water ballast , that's an extra load . These crafts are not that complicated to trim . The travel distances are short , max half hour . Anyways, an interesting tour of the cockpit . The SRN 4's would have been more complicated , with the 4 gas turbine engines and the propeller pods .
Excellent vid Chops. Very interesting & something a bit different. I live pretty close to where these go from. I've always wondered why there aren't more hovercrafts in service? Too expensive & limited passenger & freight capacity maybe?
Soo I’m looking to get myself a treat of a bike, and I’m a bit stuck on the sort of thing I like and I can’t decide, I’m stuck between the Rocket 3 , the hyabusa or the s1000 rr ? It’s hard because I’d get them all if could but can’t so any suggestions would be great?

What a great insight to how it works! Seemed like really nice, engaging guys. Fascinating. British engineering at it's best. 👍🏼

This was absolutely facinating. I went on this a couple of weeks ago and it'll always be an amazing and unique experience. I love Hovercraft
Great one for petrol/diesel heads.. loving the Greg/ John double act.. thanks guys.
Thanks Andrew, I thought so even though its not motorcycle related still very interesting 👍

Yeah keep meaning to go and look at that 👍

Very good! Especially the cockpit tour.
Great video chops, very interesting. Thanks for taking time to organise and share something different. 👍
My pleasure! 👍
Chopsy, that was brilliant. Wasn’t aware it was so involved. All clever stuff.
What a cockpit, lot's of consistent work for the captain for sure, awesome video Chops 👍🏽
Something you do not see every day.
Thanks for sharing the ride of the hovercraft.
Wow well done Chop’s another fantastic video you have pulled out of the hat, totally unexpected really enjoyable and you done a cracking job. You really are the top RUclipsr always amazing content keep up your good work buddy and thank you for taking us along for the ride👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it 😁👍
Educates, informs, entertains…
Very interesting, thanks
Very interesting, thanks for showing us this marvelous piece of engineering!
i had the pleasure of riding in a hovercraft as a kid, it was loud but incredibly smooth, even in fairly choppy waters!!

Cool A F, nice one chops.
Live in Portsmouth can watch the hovercraft all day long 👏👏👏👏
I found this very interesting, watched for motor cycle's. I ran a ferry, no idea about a hovercraft until now
Very interesting been on it a few times ,nice to know how they work .
Some new instrumentation ideas for the H2! Very interesting episode.
Haha 🤣 more gauges than a Goldwing! 😁
What an excellent idea for a vid! Very interesting and some behind the scenes stuff!👍👍
Thanks Tim 👍
Fascinating stuff, thanks for putting such an informative video together.
Remember in the early 90s before the beach barriers, when they had several marshals keeping people away from the landing pad, they'd then sweep it before every landing.
Wooow that was very interesting.... i didn't expect that much things going on in the cockpit.
Love from Malta 🇲🇹 ❤️.
really enjoyed that chops, interesting stuff
Fascinating...Thanks Mr Chops!
Very interesting subject today- Thank You!!
Brilliant video. Very enjoyable to watch.👍👍👍
Brilliant vid thanks for filming it
Great in depth view of the hovercraft chopsy, enjoyed that .👍👍 some machines they are and great to watch would love to have a go on one . Oh and congrats on reaching the Ton .😁👍👍
Thanks buddy 👍
That's incredible...really enjoyed that...if anything you could have made it a bit longer!!
Nice to see something different .
Thanks😎

Thanks Mike 👍
Great video chops great to know how they work 🙌
Went to the IOW a couple of years ago on the Hovercraft. It was brilliant. 1st time and loved it!
Incredible machine isn't it 👍
@@LambChopRides Absolutely 👍👍

Yeah gutted I never got to go on the huge cross channel ones 😢
Amazing video John, thank you so much for sharing it with us. I would think any kids watching will forget their dreams of being a train driver 😂
good name mine is jon green
Set your watch an hour ahead? 20 years behind more like. Great video chops!
That's one thing i must do go on a hover craft i watch it every year but never been on one
Interesting video Chops! 👌🏼👏🏻😎
Excellent - how thoroughly interesting...didn't let you have a quick whizz then...quick circuit of the solent??
Haha I was hoping!

Brilliant stuff, went on the now defunct cross Channel monster many years ago - what a thing! Can we now have a vid on the landing craft please? 😉
Yes bit gutted I never went on the cross channel versions 😢 haha sorry no more random vids 🤣👍
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing….
That is cool. Seems more like flying than sailing
Yeah exactly, that's why they are pilots not captains or helmsman.
Excellent vid Chops. Very interesting & something a bit different. I live pretty close to where these go from. I've always wondered why there aren't more hovercrafts in service? Too expensive & limited passenger & freight capacity maybe?
Yeah it's costly to run and maintain I think is the biggest limitation. Its why the channel crossing one's were retired 👍
A fascinating insight.
Very cool
You don’t get to see that every day
Really interesting😊👍
We went on the Solent Flyer a few years ago. Great fun. Nice to get the insights from the pilot. So when are you getting one? 😁
Haha garage isn't big enough 🤣
How awesome, I love hovercrafts 🙂
Yeah it was awesome Pete 👌
What kind of licences you need to fly it ?
BIKES ……
Or I’m off to follow TMF & TPO again 😂 😂
Happy New year Chopsy…
Haha only a slight diversion, back on track next time 😁👍
Very, very cool 👍
Sorry if I missed it but what is the cost of a non resident return ticket?
Sorry Gary, it's £28 return if I remember well.. 👍
@@LambChopRides cheers
As a islander i can confirm we do not get a discounted rate on any of the ferries or the hovercraft
Haha, been waiting for this! 🤩
I live on the Isle of Wight
Guessing your a regular on the hovercraft then 😁👍
alot to do
I love IOW 😊
