    Welcome to film school in the 70’s. Brings back a lot of memories of shooting with 16mm. Our mantra was as you say “expose for the shadows and let the highlights take care of themselves.”

      This was film school in the '90's, as well. Bolexes, Eclairs, Arri BL's, Arri S's... Cutting on Moviolas and Steenbecks as late as '94.

    I’ve found the easiest solution for metering film with a phone app is to bring along a grey card. Meter the grey card where your subject is going to be, and if you want to bias a bit towards shadows or highlights, you can tilt the card into direct light or into the shadow (bounce/ambient light) to make that adjustment. I’ve had bang-on exposure with this technique without fail.
    You can also easily factor in filtration (like vari-ND) by metering through them with the phone. This is also a great way to get your vari-ND set correctly for whatever T-stop you’re wanting to use.

  • @ChasedRabbit
    @ChasedRabbit 2 года назад +13

    It’s really interesting that you need to lean towards over exposing instead of under exposing since it’s typically more the opposite with digital, since it’s often easier to save details from darkness than from highlights when editing/color correcting. I feel like I’d constantly be fighting to remember that. Fantastic video, I really enjoyed this!

    • @Mistygio
      @Mistygio 2 года назад +2

      I was just thinking exactly that. I’m so used to under exposing when I shoot on my iPhone

    • @ChasedRabbit

      @@Mistygio it just seems so backwards, dark video is usually a lot easier to salvage!

    I learned more from this one video than what I would from many others, because you covered all the basics i wanted and you kept to the point.
    Most RUclipsrs talk a lot about unrelated stuff, but this was straight locked into the subject, about exposures especially with practicals and the film examples. So thank you so much

      I don't like 16mm film because I can't afford to shoot videos in 16mm film.

    • @DethronerX
      @DethronerX Год назад

      @@Hawa_ChapalYou can earn from super8, then slowly buy affordable ones and do more projects. Ask local bands if they want their music shot on film. They buy the film, processing and scanning and the rest you get paid for the work. I'm sure if you upload your work and if it's shot, edited, acted, lit well with good sound, you'll get projects. I don't know what you've tried so far, so sorry if you've already done what I said.
      I recently shot 11 super8 rolls but mostly goofing around on different stocks to see their results in various light conditions and ill approach this local death metal band, showing them the results, to ask them if they want a music video done by me. If they agree, it'll be a good start for me and to upgrade to 16mm. Short projects are better in the beginning, if you just have some LED lights, the 5 in 1 reflector/shade sheets pack, tripod and something to stabilize movement and a light meter, Variable ND, Mattebox, Color Card, Slate....and i guess you're good to go.

    @1:10 what do you mean by that? How shutter speed might be locked by Kodak if camera is made by Bolex? Also you have your shutter speed adjustment on the front of this Bolex, so it's not locked in.

      @andefenciaddi206 2 года назад +1

      Exactly what I said .. this guy is clearly a noob, who should have done more research before jumping into a tutorial style video 🥴

    • @quinnyshootsfilm
      @quinnyshootsfilm 2 года назад +1

      It's not locked into the film. The speed of the film is locked in. (speed meaning ISO) but it's not really locked, you can push and pull and rate the film however you want. You do it the same digitally But you do have a variable shutter on the Bolex that you can close a couple stops and even fade in. I think he's referring to the actual movement of the shutter not whether the variable shutter is open or not. at 24fps your shutter is fixed at 1/65 or 133 degree shutter.

  • @backseatprods
    @backseatprods 2 месяца назад

    So the Rex5 sends light from the lens to the viewfinder and this needs to be compensated for (it’s well documented) … so one reason you were underexposing is because with the BOLEX if Kodak says 1/60 it is actually 1/65 with a BOLEX due to shutter angle and then compensating for light loss you have to set it to 1/80. This might help with the 50D.

    I got a 16mm film camera from the Soviet era that I’ve been meaning to shoot. Been putting it off out of fear I think. But your honesty with your newness is encouraging me to shoot with it now. It’s pretty snowy where I live and I have 250D film stock. Will this be a problem?

      Get yourself a 77mm ND4 filter for the Meteor zoom that takes away 2 f-stops so whenever it is too bright you can shoot! Or even ND6 that takes 3 f-stops.

    Nice you're shooting film. Good to hear a disclaimer that you're just starting out and finding shooting celluloid rewarding. Might want to get an actual meter tho. I was out there In Nashville earlier this year shooting a commercial on Super 16 Anamorphic.
    Also next time you do a skate shot close your eyepiece so the film doesn't get flashed, on a sunny day that shot would have been a no go. If your eye isn't on the eye piece then light is getting in that shouldn't be and it won't be the light leeks on the edges that are complimentary to certain shots that happen when you load the film in brighter places. Also using white gaff tape like in that photo to seal off seems and potential light leak spots isn't that helpful if the tape your using is penetrated by light easy.

    If you use 50D film, you could push to 200 ASA (or more, if you'd like). It would give you more Information to work with and a unique look to your footage. Just don't forget to tell your develop lab that you pushed the film

    • @Kyzox2000
      @Kyzox2000 2 года назад +1

      There's no point of pushing 50 to 200 if you've got 250D. 50D is ideal for shooting in bright daylight without need for NDs

    • @Kyzox2000
      @Kyzox2000 2 года назад +2

      No because tungsten light (as in most interiors back then) is warmer so you need cooler film to make it white not yellow.

    Can you please make a reaction video to The lady of heaven movie Trailer? I know this isn’t your type of content but sometimes change can be positive. It’s coming out in AMC theaters on December 10 , 2021 in the US plus you can order the ticket in advance in their website and it is expected to have a worldwide release in various countries and it’s fine, your reaction video doesn’t have to be professionally made. Your immediate action to this noble cause would be greatly appreciated. ❤️❤️
